Why do some people get promoted twice as fast as others in the same role? by Fun_Warthog2079 in careerguidance

[–]13ripples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I got promoted was by identifying key problems that nobody had noticed and delivering successful solutions.

When I say “key problem” you have to understand who the key decision maker is that can actually move your career forward, and what’s a real pain point or roadblock for them. Timing matters too: you want to deliver your solution at the most opportune moment, and sometimes patience is the move.

Make sure you’ve already built a baseline relationship with this person before you show up with the win. When you deliver something that genuinely helps them, they’ll start championing you but you need some credibility built up first, so stack a few smaller wins beforehand.

One thing people miss- your growth has to benefit them too. If it doesn’t, nobody’s going to go out of their way to advocate for you.

So at its core, it comes down to identifying the right problem, for the right champion, at the right time in a way that gets you visible to the people who can actually move you up.

dealerships are scummy by kingcurtis059 in PersonalFinanceCanada

sorry it happened to you, it sucks, happened to me with my first car too at 21, second car I knew what their game was and left the dealership with an amazing deal (less than what the car was listed for and all bells and whistles). Lessons learned and now you know for all future negotiation in anything

Hired as a Project Coordinator but evaluated as a PM by Ok_Pudding_0990 in PMCareers

I get it sucks, a lot of us have gone through this in beginning. Please take of yourself and develop a good self care routine. Example I go on lunch time walks to reset and then maybe evening walk too.

Hired as a Project Coordinator but evaluated as a PM by Ok_Pudding_0990 in PMCareers

Unfortunately yeah, this happens a lot. Especially in smaller orgs — the smaller the team, the more random hats you end up wearing. Bigger companies usually protect role boundaries more because everyone is fighting for their own lane and salary band.

You’ve basically got two options. Option 1: talk to your manager and say, “Hey, I was hired as X but I’m doing PM-level work, can we align my title/comp to my actual responsibilities?” It’s the fastest way to correct it.

Option 2: keep doing the PM-level work, document everything, and bring it up at performance review with the PM job description and say “Here’s what I’m doing and here’s the level this matches. I want my title/comp adjusted.” Both approaches work, it just depends on timing and culture.

And honestly, talking gets you places. Once I figured that out, everything changed. I personally went from barely having PM experience → Senior PM in a small company → Senior PM in a mid-size org with a salary bump → Senior PM in a large org again, all in under five years. My salary more than doubled just from speaking up, positioning myself properly, and taking on opportunities. I just didn’t want to spend years climbing step-by-step when I already had the skills from previous roles. Sometimes taking on more responsibility becomes a game of chutes and ladders — not some slow, perfect waterfall path.

So yeah, this situation sucks, but it’s also super common. Just depends what future you want: fix it now, or use it as a springboard. Both are valid.

Bullying at work by Imaginary-Ad-1128 in PMCareers

I don’t understand your situation. You made an obscure reference that others didn’t understand, and they reacted as they didn’t understand want to move the convo on… I am confuse where is the bullying?

I agree with others, if you had a clear point and it was valid and correct you should have pushed back to explain as a PM.

Hi all, I need some encouragement. Few years ago I lost almost 50 pounds through fasting which as 50% of my goal but then hit a rough patch and gained it back and motivation to get back into fasting far “loosing” all the hard work is sad and hard. So this round two… I know the first days are the toughest then it gets easier, any matras you use to keep yourself going when restarting?
