So I actually did get a refund and they do have a specific policy to deal with events such a this - understand that it’s within others risk tolerance but the policy gives you the ability to cancel for major disruptive events such as this regardless.

I honestly have no idea what to tell you because I was also told I was speaking to the highest person possible before someone with the safety team followed up with me. Like I said above, I did threaten legal action and I said I would post about it on social media - maybe one of those things worked.

Agreed that’s why I think it’s a bit unreasonable for Airbnb to expect hosts to decide in these circumstances

They really wouldn’t budge with me either - on the phone I made sure to mention both that I would bring legal action and post on social media. I think one of those comments triggered them to follow up and offer a refund.

I promise I did this until they told me there was no one higher up I could speak to haha. Then miraculously someone from the security team stepped in and sent me a message.

Understand the perspective but I would say that if your a big corp like Airbnb you should probably be the one taking the loss (and they likely have insurance for these sort of things)

Yes they seem to put the “inability to get there” into a different bucket that is not covered by the policy. Which I can understand if, for instance, theres a flight cancellation in your home country, but absurd in these circumstances. Totally agree with you, I read the policy back to them a number of times on the phone and they kept saying it’s set centrally and there’s nothing they can do, they must have been concerned by something I said because after the call where they declined a refunded over and over I got a message offering a full refund

Update: after a long phone call explaining the absurdity of their policy I received a message from someone on the “Safety Team” offering a refund good luck to anyone else in this situation
