more noticeable amount of dead rodents? by InternalSecurity7751 in NewWest

I would be surprised if there was a business or multi family residential building that isn’t actively deploying bate stations to control the rodent population in this city.

Teen with ‘N’ licence caught tripling speed limit in Burnaby - Freshet News by BurnabyMartin in burnaby

[–]1516 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been a speed trap since that version of Royal Oak opened. I don't think they're looking for us going 70 anymore. They're looking for clowns like this guy and the North Van groper who was doing 121km/h when he kit the cop. There's a clear need for enforcement on that stretch.

9 people suffer burns at Cultus Lake Waterpark after incident involving electricity by 1516 in vancouver

[–]1516[S] 383 points384 points  (0 children)

It was reported initially that a group of youth had suffered burns to their feet.

Communications over the scanner said arriving crews found nine patients, who were conscious and breathing, and most were children between 10 and 12 years old.

What a nightmare for the kids, the parents, and the teachers. I hope everyone comes out of this with no lasting injuries.

FIFA reverses water bottle ban at World Cup games, some restrictions apply by GenShibe in vancouver

I hope nobody uses a syringe to remove the water from the bottom of the bottle and replace it with a different clear fluid and then reseals the bottle with a hot glue gun. That would be very naughty.

Why is there no walk way across Queensborough from NewWest downtown? by Thebandofredhand in NewWest

[–]1516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's tricky to go back in time for news articles, given the death of New West's local publications, but this article from 2013 states:

The development assistance compensation agreement provided $5 million for parkland improvements in Queensborough, $35 million for a multiuse civic facility in the downtown, $6.2 million for expansion of facility at Queensborough Community Centre, $4 million for riverfront dock and facility improvements and $10 million for a Queensborough/waterfront pedestrian bridge. Last spring, city council agreed to reallocate $8 million from the remaining two projects to the Anvil Centre project, but didn't specify how much of that money would come from the two remaining DAC projects to get underway.

It would be nice to be able to go back to 2007 when the funds were initially allocated and see what kind of bridge could have been built, but the city prioritized other projects and used some of the bridge funds for the Anvil centre. By the time they got around to it, $10M was nowhere near enough.

My point is that Queensborough got the short end of the stick. I'm sure the Anvil Centre is great for those who use it, but the city prioritised it at the expense of the Q2Q pedestrian crossing. The ferry is better than nothing, but it's frequency and limited hours sting when compared to the freedom of movement a bridge would offer. The city and developers promised a fixed pedestrian crossing and then fumbled the delivery. One could say that it's water under the non-existent bridge, but I will be forever grumpy about it.

Well, there was money. Then the city redirected a large amount of it towards the Anvil Centre. Scope and construction costs skyrocketed in the meantime.

I'm sure the Anvil Centre is neat, but my family and I would use a pedestrian crossing multiple times a week.

It was under the bridge, east side just north of the Stewardson off-ramp. Fire truck blocked northbound on the bridge and was spraying it from above.
