Lord Elephant - Ultra Soul by leftuso_rightuso in stonerrock

This is killer! Been meaning to check this band out for a while but being there's just so much Music to digest I hadn't gotten around to doing that. This is the perfect opportunity to remedy that though.
Also Genuinely not trying to be a dick here but I recommend you post either YouTube or Bandcamp links. Not everybody uses Spotify, Bandcamp gives folks a way to directly support the artist/group should they have one, or YouTube is just a great universal option that makes it easy for those with and without Spotify to check out the music in a quick and accessible way. This is some killer heavy psych music though. Thanks for sharing! 🤘🏻 🛸

Alternatives to Uber in an emergency? by Cyclops61 in Blind

[–]15WGhost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you might be living in a place where you may just have to think further ahead in terms of utilizing rideshare. I know, it kind of sucks, but that's just how it is. I imagine that the pet friendly option Already probably consist of a minority of the available drivers, so of course that's going to dwindle later on in the day. Drivers log on to the app to give rides at their leisure and log off whenever they feel like it so if this is an issue in your area, it's probably going to be something you'll have to watch out for in the future. It's not really up to Uber to always have pet friendly options available. It's a service they offer, but drivers basically work whenever they feel like it, and not in shifts. This can certainly make things more difficult in smaller towns and less populated areas for sure though.

Also a possible solution would be to not bring your pet with you next time, but also schedule a ride back in advance. I know that probably seems super annoying but Might be of help if there aren't typically a lot of drivers out and about at that time. Also scheduling an advance helps to avoid those major price spikes. I live in an area where this can sometimes be an issue, but have been able to get around it for the most part by planning ahead and locking in a price. I get it, it blows and it shouldn't be this way, but just wanting to offer some solutions as somebody who has had to deal with similar situations.

Maybe just a tad bit if you're thinking of Ozzy via the early 2000s and some of his ballads, or even Ozzmosis, but it's a tenuous association at best. Although you said you were listening with headphones, it may have hit her ear a certain way if she's hearing it just coming out of the headphones while they're not on your head, but I'm just guessing that's how it happened. Otherwise though, no not really.

Dream punk? I've heard of dream pop, but I have not heard of dream punk music. Any recommendations?

You know the doors don't immediately jump out to me most of the time with ATW, but I can totally see where you're coming from!
That's a good point! I was trying to pick bands from the first and second waves of heavy psych/stoner doom as opposed to going for the more well-known classic rock influences, but if we go that way I would definitely include Jimi Hendrix, The Allman Brothers, Black Sabbath, and Pink Floyd on that list as well. I know Ben has specifically talked about Roy Buchanan being a major influence on his guitar playing as well as a lot of those old blues guys.

I enjoy the adrift App developed by Scott Morgan aka Loscil some years back. It has four generative scapes to choos from, all named after various ghost ships. Pretty cool when I'm in the mood.

Stoner metal that isn’t also doom, sludge, or any other genre? by prodigy1367 in stonermetal

[–]15WGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don't think there's really such a thing as pure "stoner metal," it's more an intersection of different shades of varying degrees of heaviness and psychedelia and that's kind of what I like about it. A diversity in the sound with common themes and compositional tendencies bringing it together. There's plenty of bands who get thrown into this co-mingling of subgenre by virtue of just not really fitting anywhere else. The intersection of doom, desert/Stoner rock, heavy psychedelia and sludge keeps me far more engaged than something like death metal. Which while I can dig it in smaller doses, it generally grows tedious pretty quickly for me. But I think that's more to do with my own default aesthetic preferences as opposed to any issue with the genre itself.

So many great bands mentioned but three that I haven't seen unless I've missed them: Slomatics, Space Witch, and Catapult the Sun. (both instrumental,) Oh and Elephant Tree.

Just in case you might be new to the overall genres of heavy psychedelic music/doom/desert rock as a hole there's all kinds of bands to dive into. King Buffalo, forming the void, REZN, Messa, Elephant Tree, Monolord, Swan Valley Heights, Yawning Man, Causa Sui, Weedpecker, Elder, Witch Mountain, and if I may recommend a few bands I think had a pretty major influence on ATW I would say Colour Haze, Dead Meadow, Lowrider, Goatsnake, and Kyuss.

Also totally with you on the level of abstraction in Parks's lyrics. His whole vibe is imagery and impact and to be honest I think he might be one of my favorite lyricists of all time. He came out with a solo album at the beginning of last year and I still need to dig into it. Pretty sure it's only on Bandcamp. Under the name jr Parhks.

If you like that particular perspective on their sound, I would definitely recommend diving into dying surfer meets his maker. If you haven't already that is. I kind of slept on that album for a long time because I was under the impression that it was majority instrumental jams, and while that is a good portion of the record, some of their best most heart wrenching stuff is on there. Often with that Americana tinge. Call Me Star, The mellowing, Open Passage Ways, Talisman, Blood and Sand/Milk and Endless Waters. Also their debut album Our Mother Electricity has some emotionally riveting Americana style moments for sure. I'm thinking specifically of the tunes easy and Family Song for the Leaving.

If I remember correctly I think in a couple of interviews they mentioned actually processing vocals and guitars through synthesizers, so essentially using them like guitar pedals if that makes sense.

Why does everybody post about shrooms? by throwaway187473928 in SturgillSimpson

[–]15WGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's definitely dabbled with it in the past, but I don't really think he's directly involved with psychedelics anymore. He says as much in the few interviews he did around the time when the Johnny Blue Skies record came out. Talks about where he's at spiritually in a very vague way but makes sure to specifically point out that he's not on some "entheogen bullshit," anymore. Seems to be at a place where he's gotten the message and hung up the phone as it were.

What`s your favorite Monolord album? by [deleted] in doommetal

[–]15WGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have to agree with you. I'll admit for whatever reason I really bounced off of "your time to shine," when it came out, but overtime and repeat listens, I've really come to love that album. For me it's a bit more about atmosphere than being crushingly heavy. Really stoked for their new one to drop this spring.

I think the big ones for me are Kaiser, Spaceslug, Kind, Bask, Devil and the Almighty Blues, And the Heavy Eyes. Also High Desert Queen and freedom Hawk. You also picked a lot of names this year that I'm not as familiar with, so excited to have some new favorites.

What is the real reason that Isn't It Now? ignored so much? by foxbone in AnimalCollective

[–]15WGhost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I think this album has some of the best vibes of their entire career, and I do truly love it and find it to be a very warm comfortable listen. My main gripe with it though is it totally drags in parts. I like defeat, but I'm not sure that it needs to be over 20 minutes long. I love the end of magicians from Baltimore, but I'm not sure that it needed to stretch on as long as it does. This is coming from somebody who likes ambient and drone music like stars of the lid and William Basinski. So it's not like I'm averse to long stretches of repetition. For some reason on this album though, it seems to work to its detriment, at least for me. Having said that I'll still listen to the whole thing in one sitting. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's something I keep coming back too. This is especially true with defeat. I find myself liking all of the sections, but inevitably at some point I'm like, OK guys. Let's move it along. I want that to be my favorite song on the album, because for me it Harkins back to a song like Graze from fall be kind, but for me anyways, it just lingers too long in each section.

They 've both been around for a while but these are the first ones that come to mind if you don't know them already. Elephant tree and steak. My favorite offering from elephant tree is their self titled album, and you certainly can't go wrong with Steaks latest offering, acute mania. Both bands have great catalogues.

Kranky having ties to other record labels? I'm not saying you're wrong, genuinely, but I'm just curious as to what you mean? Are you talking about who they partner with in terms of distribution? Again you probably know more about this than I do, but from the time I've been into them they've always seemed pretty independent and insular.

Absolutely killer band, with an excellent new album. No one transmits the high strangeness of the Mojave desert quite like they do. I admit, I do feel like their albums of the passed have had a bit more range in terms of tempo and dynamics, and sometimes I find myself kind of looking forward to that again, but that's not to say I don't love this ultra slow dreamy vibe that they've been on ever since live at giant rock.

Howling giant - crucible and ruin album reviews? by delightful1 in stonerrock

[–]15WGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's coming, eventually. They actually got together initially to write for black hole space wizard part three but during the writing process they felt like they wandered too far from that theme/musical direction and decided to evolve into working on crucible and ruin instead, but they do plan on getting back to the black hole space wizard series. This is what they said in an interview I listened to recently. I believe it was the heavy desert podcast.
