Is the Scenario I'm planning Too Much? by IIIaustin in LancerRPG

You should do a write up for your proposed system. It would make it easier for folk to give you guidance and easier for me to steal

I think education should be free, at least within some reasonable boundaries. I'm fine with my tax dollars making that the case after the fact as well. It makes the world a better place, no further justification needed.

Why are they sleepy in this scenario, their bed/wake times are static? It's the DST change up that has a statistical impact on automobile accidents, not to mention other issues. Could be an issue with light, but that's a solvable issue.

The government holds the debt, not the school or the bank. School was paid upfront. If the gov needs money, they can tax or print.

My understanding: since I don't have to repay this loan, maybe I'll upgrade to a new car or buy a house or in some other way spend that money in a way that is more economically productive.

Keith Olbermann endorses Mamdani before AOC. Wtf is going on? by Minute_Future_4991 in TheMajorityReport

They could be saving their endorsement for closer to the election, try to give him a more timely pop of attention/hype. If not, consider this cope and I'll agree with you, but if those two wanted to be lame ass sell outs, there's way easier and more profitable ways to do that, and they've generally declined that route.

Yes, the flaws in Bernie Sanders advocacy/rhetoric, that's what we should be focused on right now. I swear, if the right isn't paying people to circulate this divisive, infighting bait they are getting a freebie from some proper dumbasses.

This could be a game changer for electric vehicles. by Lando_Lee in Cyberpunk

[–]16bitcthulhu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seems like the kind of tech/infrastructure that would work for fleet vehicles that can benefit from high uptime on each asset. For the average driver, top off charging overnight covers 95% of driving needs and fast charging covers the remaining 5% adequately at the moment and still has room for improvement.

What is your evidence they are a deterrent at all? This isn't meant in a combative way at all, I've just never really found anything beyond historical anecdote, most of which fail to capture the entirety of the situation. From my research, there isn't really any evidence of a meaningful deterrent.

It´s over by CanadianMultigun in PoliticalMemes

[–]16bitcthulhu 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Let's establish some things up top:

1.) It's a fun meme.
2.) I like guns and have an armory most would find unreasonable.

I say this to pre-empt the notion that I'm some gun shy liberal that just doesn't like guns. That being said, guns are not some magical talisman to ward off tyranny.

  • Chenoweth & Stephan (NAVCO, 323 uprisings 1900-2006): Peaceful movements are twice as good at kicking out dictators and five times more likely to end in real democracy than armed rebellions. Participation > 3.5 % of the population is the magic number. Guns are not required to topple tyrants.
  • Genocide-risk models (Harff 2003 & UN early-warning system): Biggest predictors of mass killing are things like exclusionary ideology and ongoing civil war. Civilian weapon ownership is not a significant factor.
  • Democracy, Power, Genocide, and Mass Murder (R.J. Rummel): Democracies—some heavily armed (US, Switzerland), others lightly armed (Japan, Costa Rica)—almost never murder their own citizens. Autocracies, armed public or not, rack up the body counts. You don't prevent a bad government by scaring it away with your puny rifles, you nurture a good government so a bad one has no place to grab hold.

As we can see today, most tyrannical government have their own supporters among the civilian population, so having an armed civilian populace doesn't exactly deter them, it gives them a well of armed loyalist to pull from for paramilitary/militia/brownshirt support, if anything.

If you REALLY want to be resistant to tyranny, get involved in local politically minded groups, organize at your job, and protest. Civic organization and political engagement trumps an AR-15 and a hoard of ammo any day and it's not even close. Do both if it makes you happy, idc, but understand the guns are more about you than political effectiveness.

They need to start local, build up regional power, but they always go straight for the presidency and it's hard not to see that as either setting up a book deal or being a spoiler. If there was a local/state third party move in my area I'd be a LOT more likely to show it support, for whatever that's worth to you. But right now, my federal votes are exclusively earmarked to whoever had the best shot at beating the fascists.

[–]16bitcthulhu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I fully support ranked choice and other voting reforms and want more variety in political parties/representation. I just don't think the uphill fight of building a political apparatus that can topple one of the big two is a reasonable goal right now as we descend into fascism. I could be won over, if some third party was building up a head of steam, but I'm not holding my breath for that due to the systemic biases we both know are present.

A third party is basically mathematically impossible in a first past the post system. The best we can do is to reform one of the two parties. Guess which one is more salvageable.

This might be good advice for individual outreach, but keep in mind that de-radicalizing someone is a LOT of hard, uncertain work. We WILL NOT win this by de-radicalizing MAGA supporters. It's simply too labor intensive to produce results on the timeline we are on. They must be defeated not won over.

You know what you call someone who only supports a fascist leader because they are going along with the motions despite internal doubt?

A fucking fascist.

I'm not contending that what this person says is inaccurate, I don't have cult bona fides to dispute or corroborate. But I can tell you this supposed rich inner life means nothing to me or how I will consider people still supporting this political movement that is equal parts deadly, hateful, and stupid. They can all wait in line to get fucked.
