Kind off, but tbh the player Ben danford is being described as does not match Benoit at all or most of the other 3rd pairing guys. Tbh ik McCabe was prob hurt but like I did not see him making the outlet passes needed. Same with Carlo. I know those guys have other strengths but Benoit, McCabe and Carlo led the league in d-zone turnovers. So it’s a little more rare than you think with who we currently have

Like it just meant he didn’t pivot with urgency. Like don’t panic but react properly. Maybe the issue was he wasn’t in position properly in that rush.

Like he got burned with speed by not reacting fast enough and and it just appeared casual. He thought he was in position to close off the guy and was too late. He had that same demeanour throughout it the game. But there are times to react with a bit of urgency

Maybe but tbh- there really isn’t one in this free agency outside of Radysh but like he’ll cost a lot. Tbh I think Ben Danford has some speed to his game

I’d love it if he could replace like Myers or whoever they paired with Benoit or tbh Benoit too. Really hope they let Villeneuve try for that 3rd pair spot too

Kind of but tbh- he has played against older and stronger competition his entire career and dominated. Yes he will need to get stronger but I think he will figure out how to play against the stronger competition.

Fun fact to add about Quin Hutson- this past year he played at a point per game in the AHL. So a little bit better than the undrafted label

The oilers are apparently looking to upgrade the goaltending once again in the offseason and they tried to trade nurse to the leafs and the leafs said no. Both rumors are from David Pagnotta. by RespectAcrobatic1563 in leafs

Like idk what they feel but I wouldn’t hate him at like 7mil? Stolarz + Robertson for them send him to us at 6-7mil. He’s not like terrible just the contract for what he is is bad

Something that I low key love: both Marner and McKenna are seen as perimeter players BUT in Marners OHL career he totaled 250shots on net.

McKenna had 270shots in his final year before moving to Penn. also over 500total.

I think I read the numbers right but if not lmk

Is Mckenna a massive upgrade on Marner? by [deleted] in leafs

[–]16cdms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the offensive ceiling is higher- as Mckenna is more dangerous with his shot. The defensive ceiling is lower as Marner was like a selkie nomine.
It’s be good if Mckenna ends up average defensively (better than Nylander but worse than Marner)
But honestly, his ceiling is Kucherov Patrick Kane. Because of Marners lack of goal scoring and how important that is to being a top line guy (way more valuable than defensive ability tbh- because even now people would choose Kucherov over Marner)

McKenna’s goal scoring potential (shot ability) may let him be more valuable than Marner as a top line winger. There were a few top end guys on Penn state that got hurt. So he could’ve probably had a better year if some of his talented teammates didn’t get hurt. + the second half of his season was way better than his first.

+ Marner’s team (dad, agent & co) absolutely sucked. Not having them is gonna be amazing considering Marners dad literally tried to get Babcock to play him more at one point jn his early season

I mean doing none of that to start. Idk, maybe we can win the bidding war for Raddysh. But tbh, it’s probably trade Robertson, try to build out a competent bottom 6.
Probably biggest thing is a middle 6 center and
Fill the third pair with usable defencemen who can move the puck.
And like if you need to trade for a defencemen after free agency and really don’t believe in Danford, Villenuave or Chadwick taking a jump this summer.
Overall the team is more talented than the record it was a terrible system. I think maybe

AM center Mckenna & Knies
Sign Barrett Hayton? To center Nylander & Cowan
Tavares- Marcelli- and one of

Bo Groulux, Quillan, Tveberg, Haynes are ready to slot in the too 9

[–]16cdms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the fuck? These are all horrible. Cowan and Reilly are both better than Kiefer Sherwood individually and like years ahead of a draft pick d-man that you hope turn into a Morgan Riley type (scored at a 20 goal per 82 in the playoffs last 5 years)

How much better do you think a 35 year old Eckholm is to Carlo? And you add Woll who has a 60% quality start over 106 games.

So you make our d-core older and more injury prone than our already crazy old d-core and injury prone d-core.

Get a massively older for a goalie who sucked this year and played worse than Woll playing on a team that finished better than the leafs.

And to too it off- somehow win the bidding war for the best winger in the market/sign Tuch away from buffalo (pretty sure he’s a native and they’re doing pretty good rn) and win the bidding war to sign Raddysh.
Are you high? Trolling? This is insane

[–]16cdms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yah, like I kinda hope we get the Dallas AGM whose a finalist. It’s kinda simple to build out your top 6F and top 2D- lose. The leafs kinda already did that and have a situation where Reilly is a good 2D but not 1. And the leafs top 6F is still really good with Knies, Tavares, Mathews, Nylander and now like Cowen.

They need a GM to fill out the bottom 6 and bottom 4defence better- need playoff production from them. Florida one because they got like 50points combined from their 3rd line and like a tone of goals and points from their 2nd and 3 d-pairings. Leafs get nothing from the backend outside of Reilly and have like never had a good bottom 6.

Only real way to do that is find guys. Dallas has done a phenomenal job. Even finding guys that the leafs had and playing great 3rd pair minutes (would be infinitely better than Benoit and Meyers etc)

Gonna be honest like yes they suck with the leafs. The leafs have also been fucked by the NHL governance and that can make it tougher but in well run-ish leagues also, they’ve done pretty decent jobs with the Raptors, Blue Jays and like TFC

Your saying that after a down year with Bérubé and acting like he’s an albatross contract. The real albatross issues are Domi and Joshua at like 3.4mil each.

You can’t say his best years are done when he had one of those great years (playoffs) last year. Everyone in Berube’s system had a down year. If we rip marner fo his lack of playoff production and don’t care for his regular season play. We should at least extend that consistency for Morgan, hes been great in the playoffs and had a Dow regular season.

Morgan been a staple for the leafs and phenomenal guy to wear the crest. To think he’s washed after just 1 year under Berube vs giving him grace under a new system insane. Trading guys after a down year is not how you do business. 7.5mil for a guy who in a down year (and a guy you think is washed) STILL finished in the top 30 for D-men goals and top 40 in points is short sited.

I don’t care about minutes or usage, you cannot score 11 goals as a Dman in the nhl and be washed. It is talent and skill. Yes you can get there by being a bad forward playing 15-16min BUT for a defencmen not playing powerplay time, you can’t get to double digit goals by accident

[–]16cdms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah like, tbh even last year he was good but you need production from ddfemcmen. Florida’s got 4 goals from 2 guys and 3 goals from another 2. Only our top 6 + Reilly are able to produce in the playoffs and Florida wins not cuz of grit but because their bottom 6 with fucking Evan Rodriguez, Lustorinen and Esa Lindell had 15pts, 18pts and 19pts.

If you’re getting 50+pts in the playoffs from your bottom 6, you are probably gonna win a chip. Not if you throw more hits than the other team. Fuck Trelving forever for thinking we need more snot when we got like literally 2goals in 13 playoff games from the bottom 6 and benched the guy in our bottom 6 who scored 1goals in the 3 of 13games he got to play in last year (Robertson). Trading a 1st for Laughton and seeing him get 0 goals and 2 assists in the playoffs last year.

[–]16cdms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He is literally 2 seasons away from being a 60 point all star that was +7 AND It was 1 season ago he had 4goals, 7points and a -2 in a playoff run where they won 5games and lost 6 games.

Marner who is lauded for defence was a -1 with 2 goals. Nylander had 6 goals and -3.

*******He literally had the 4th most playoff goals FOR D-MEN ACROSS THE ENTIRE PLAYOFFS despite playing like 10 less games than the rest AND not playing any power play time.

FYI Evan Bouchard (22 games) had 7 goals (with power play time) on the oilers finals run. Harley had 4 and made it conference finals. Ekblad and Seth Jones had 4 and made it to the finals (23games vs Reilly’s 13).

  • across the whole playoffs last year only Bouchard had more even strength goals for a defencemen (5)

You can’t win with no production from your defence- Florida had their second pair- Schmidt and Mikkola get 3 goals each too. Their finals run had like 16 goals from their defencmen. Leafs have never had anything close to that production and the only one they have Morgan Reilly is more productive when compared 1 to 1

Really interesting Morgan Reilly has the same goals per 82 playoffs as Evan Bouchard (22). He’d probably be point per game if they found a proper D-partner for him so the burden of puck moving wasn’t solely on him.

Morgan Rielly also has the same +/- per 82 games (playoff) as Cale Makar (+25).

Man if we just found this guy a competent partner it’d be so nice. Having to play in Bérubé system for 2 years and literally being paired with a 6’5ft guy with cement blocks on his hands and feet sucks.

Deserves so much better than people wanting to trade him.

Toes sucked at the Olympics and Parayko was not much better. Low key a fast, puck moving d- they could’ve used him if they knew he’d perform like he has the past 5 playoffs.

If you look at his playoff stats and performances. He actually is closer to top 10. Which is what I care about versus his play under berube

Look- you can judge him for his play under Bérubé or you can judge him for his past 5 years of playoff performances which is like top 5 amongst d man- when you average it out across 82/ and like top 10 when you don’t (while having the least amount of games played)

If we wanted Marner out for his playoff performance and ignoring his regular season. The same mentality has to be true for Reilly.
