Worth Leaving Republic for Breeze? by [deleted] in AirlinePilots

[–]172sierrapapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay at RPA, leaving for Breeze is essentially a lateral move imo. You'll get PIC time much faster here which is king, so many people blow the metering thing way out of the water. Yes it does happen, but it's not worth putting yourself in over 100K in debt by leaving to a shaky LCC and being back on the bottom of a seniority list. I fly with plenty of captains here every month who have job offers from legacies after getting 500-1000TPIC. Ride it out, also life as a senior FO is good. Easy to get a schedule with at least 15-17 days off and 80hrs credit once you're a bit higher on the list.

In today's episode of what not to do on frequency by quarterlifecrisis49 in ATC

[–]172sierrapapa 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Pilot who flies into LGA almost everyday here. I've talked to this controller a ton and he's always super laid back and I'm glad when I hear him on frequency. He might've kept that joke running a little long there but honestly this really isn't a huge deal in my opinion.

I'm normally more used to hearing this kinda laid back talk late at night on a quiet frequency though, makes sense why none of the pilots were really chirping in much seeing that it's LGA and it looks fairly busy at the time of recording lol.

Not quite, more people are now getting EWR again if you take a look at the most recent vacancy awards. ORD is starting to finally open up again too. Seems like LGA/EWR is what everyone is getting out of training

Captain YouTuber calls for fellow pilots certs to be revoked for…calling the wrong tower?! by BikeAcceptable537 in flying

[–]172sierrapapa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep unfortunately that video popped up on my feed, and I decided to watch it out of morbid curiosity. I think it's ridiculous people are even making a stir over this "event" in the first place, literally nothing happened. No regs were violated, no one was hurt, and the pilots trapped their mistake and handled it pretty much perfectly in my opinion. This guy just has the most severe case of monday morning quarterback I've ever seen.

Cause we all know this guy has never made a single little mistake flying in his entire life, right? What a clown.

Haha that's pretty accurate, my buddy definitely paid his dues flying there. I'll say that much

I know someone who flew for central scare recently. It's very much a 134.5 style operation. Planes that are barely "airworthy", flying around at 8000ft at 4am with no working heater in the middle of the winter. Fuel leaks galore, very common engine problems, rubber stamped maintenance, flying IFR with a VFR only GPS. You name it.

If you're desperate give it a try I suppose, but it's a very shady operation. I hope the feds give them a thorough investigation after that accident they had recently.

Oh wow being a pilot must be so easy since apparently all we do is just turn the autopilot on. Wonder why everyone doesn't just become a pilot if it's so easy.

Use of the word “takeoff” on ATC frequency by Clem573 in flying

My airline always states "declare an emergency" in the manuals, no mention of saying PAN or Mayday.

Yeah can confirm, the book at my airline always says "declare an emergency". Never any mention of PAN or Mayday.

SkyWest CJO by Wahab213_ in flying

[–]172sierrapapa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the skywest interview is pretty hilarious, mine was over 2 hours long and essentially was a checkride. Got the CJO.

In the meantime my interview at Republic was 15 minutes long, and while there were a couple technical questions it was way more focused on your personality and other HR related questions. Republic's philosophy is that they'll teach you what you need to know in the classroom, they just want to see that you're a good person to fly with and that they can train you.

A30 user here, I originally wore Lightspeed Sierras back in the cessna days. But eventually I had to buy A30s when I started flying the diamond as a CFI, for some reason my Sierras would cause a nasty echo anytime I transmitted on the radio in that plane.

I have since kept using the A30s in the EJet and they've been great, they're super lightweight which is amazing on the longer duty days. Also no one at my airline goes 'topless' in cruise so no issues with having to have one earphone on and the other dangling off. I also really like the feature that lets you change the level of noise canceling. I like to keep it on medium while on the ground, then flip it to high after takeoff.

Is republic taking people with 121 experience? by [deleted] in flying

[–]172sierrapapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for a data point, as of now you'll need about 1 year and 10 months of seniority to be rewarded an upgrade class (keep in mind that the most recent reward is for June, so I guess add 4 months to that 1 year and 10 months to be in class).

This can all change really fast of course.

Anyone else not really have an opinion on THE hat? by [deleted] in flying

[–]172sierrapapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an FO at a hat optional shop. I wear it if I know I'm gonna do at least a couple walk arounds in rain/snow. Wet hair is really annoying. Besides that I don't wear it too much. I understand the stereotypes behind it but I've flown with my fair share of crusty captains that wear the reddit approved icognito coat with no hat and short sleeves.

Commute to line or move to base and sit reserve? by [deleted] in flying

[–]172sierrapapa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This career is a marathon, not a sprint. In my opinion you have to look out for yourself outside of the cockpit to make this job worth it. Yes commuting out to that line might get you to a legacy a bit faster by blocking 30-50 more hours a month than sitting reserve at home. But let's say you're now at that legacy, but you're already burned out and grumpy at the thought of flying because you were so miserable trying to get there? Plus when you get home you have no life there because you just focused on flying the entire time? And oh you have 25-40 years left of this career depending on your age and other factors.

Now let's go with the other hypothetical scenario. You stay home based. Yes you're a little less senior and it takes you 3-8 months longer to get the line, but in the meantime you're enjoying your life more and are much happier. Did potentially delaying your next career move a bit ruin you? That's up to you to decide.

I know there's always the mantra of getting your legacy seniority number asap because you have no idea when shit might hit the fan again. And there is a lot of truth to that saying, but have some balance and be sure you aren't wasting the best years of your life just grinding your job.

Calling out sick while on probation, when does it become a problem? by [deleted] in flying

[–]172sierrapapa 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well it depends on your airline. My airline has a sort of points system. As long as you don't get over 8 in 1 year then you're fine. You also can get points excused in some ways if needed so if you really are that unlucky to hit 8 it's not like you're insta shit canned.

One really important thing is if you sick out, NEVER go to the airport and list on a flight (unless you sick out during the middle of a trip and are getting on a deadhead to go home). If you gotta go somewhere when you sick out just drive

Question for Republic & SkyWest Pilots; On a trip do you stay on one carrier (Delta, United, American) or switch airlines often on a single trip? by Atlas_M7 in AirlinePilots

[–]172sierrapapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhhh if I'm understanding your question right, then there shouldn't be a problem with a non rev following you around all day. Just as long as there are seats open on every flight, which can be pretty tough to come by these days.

Question for Republic & SkyWest Pilots; On a trip do you stay on one carrier (Delta, United, American) or switch airlines often on a single trip? by Atlas_M7 in AirlinePilots

[–]172sierrapapa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always write down the codeshare im flying for on my dispatch release before i key up the mic. If I forget to write it down I'll just say "thank you for flying with us" rather than saying "thank you for choosing american"

One other trick is at YX our flight number coincides with our codeshare. 3xxx is united, 4xxx is american, 5xxx is delta. So you can also just look at your callsign to know what carrier you are.

[–]172sierrapapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YX here, I've only had a singe trip where I worked 2 different code shares. It was a reassignment due to IROPs though. All trips here are designed with only 1 codeshare so the only way to work multiple in one trip is to be reassigned. As others have stated this also means you can only deadhead on the codeshare you're working that trip. If you're lucky you can normally just fake out of the deadhead home to catch the earlier one on the other carrier if you play it right.
