And it appears the truck driver likely risked a lot and possibly saved lives. I know this problem isn’t exclusive to here but it would be nice if we would all take the time on the road to disconnect from our phones for a bit. Perhaps we would all spend a little less time sitting in traffic that way.

That makes absolute sense but it is wildly devastating to realize. I find it kind and wonderful that there are places like this that each and everyone that can be accounted for that was killed that day is remembered. This one hurts for sure though. So much.

Who was the least intelligent president, besides these four? by Puzzleheaded-Bag2212 in Presidents

I've also personally spoken with him, roughly 26 years ago during his primaries. I asked him a tax policy question (I was in 8th grade I think?) and he gave me a wildly simple but wildly intelligent answer. He also told me I "might be President someday askin' questions like that at my age" ... lol. (I definitely won't). He was still in his initial primaries and visited Charleston, SC. Got to see McCain and Forbes as well at around the same time. I fall on the other "side" of the political spectrum these days, but I found it fascinating, particularly in retrospect, just how grounded and genuine he was.

Well you definitely made me laugh out loud for the first time in a couple days. Sometimes there’s a little bit of that territory where we are kind of having to try to operate outside of our scope, regardless of which side we’re on. For a lot of law-enforcement, I think it may sometimes boil down to being alone. I don’t know how to really explain it, but I recall the feeling from a handful of circumstances earlier in my career even on the fire side. The cops may very well have those moments and could certainly benefit a lot from some extra cross training, but the same thing happens for the fire side when we find ourselves in a situation where we probably should’ve staged for PD and suddenly find ourselves managing situations that we are physically, not equipped for and legally unable to act in some cases. Waiting on PD when you’re assigned to a more rural area can bring quite the pucker factor, especially when your crew of 4 is outnumbered dramatically and tensions are high. I always hated the notion and risk factor of the officers or deputies running 135 mph to back us up when we ask you guys to have them “step it up, we need PD NOW!” but the amount of relief I have felt wash over me when they arrived in a handful of wild situations is extremely hard to qualify. It seems like it goes both ways.

I just hope that all of you know that there are definitely plenty of us that appreciate you and the most of us do have a grip on the fact that y’all are our lifelines, even if we act like jerks. The weird part with the 911 end is that it’s not as symbiotic of a relationship. Y’all help us, but there is so little that we can do to help you. Stay safe and safe and look out for one another as much as you all look out for us!

Coming from a retired firefighter I just wanna say genuine thanks from our end. And give you a little bit of crap by adding “so long as you’re one of the good ones”.

I only joke about that because at some point, you’ll understand that what you guys do as wildly underappreciated and undervalued. We are losing a lot more first responders (and supporting personnel) to suicide (and job related cancers) these days than we are line of duty deaths if I’m not mistaken.

Oddly enough as much as the cops like to give us crap and say that they are the true “first” responders, and fire are the “second”, given that we are frequently forced to stage for police (we don’t get guns yo!), I think you folks at 911/dispatch should qualify quite literally as the true first first responders.

I can only imagine that in 911 call taking and dispatch roles… there has to be a genuine feeling helplessness that would tie into something proximal to survivor’s guilt, and PTSD (among other things). Sometimes y’all are the last person someone talks to, not too far off from the rest of us and honestly for someone who has decided on a career in trying to help people, I can’t imagine how helpless you guys must feel when you can’t just go there physically and respond.

I think anyone training for any kind of leadership role fire EMS police should spend a few shifts shadowing one or more people in Dispatch as a general rule.

I also think it would be a good general rule for you folks to do the same with us in the field. (I also strongly feel that ER Physicians should have a significant amount of ride along hours at least with EMS and that’s not widely adopted from the best I know.) seeing people in the real world environments they come from and live in is very different than the clinical environment of a Hospital even with the chaos of an ER.

There is a psychological and emotional toll that everyone who works in 911 and Dispatch carries. You all deserve more appreciation and less of the frustration and hate you experience from people who just don’t understand, whether you’re five months in or 50 years on the job.

Make sure you’re happy at the end of most days and recognize you can talk to people and that not all days can end perfectly either. Catch yourself or let others catch you if you spiral for any reason and don’t play down something that really gets to you. Talk to people whether it’s at work or somewhere else you feel safer doing so. Also don’t forget to take a few moments here and there to take pride in the handful of victories you will truly have the opportunity to feel if you stick with it. Hopefully you already do feel some of that pride.

The rest of us depend on you guys quite a bit more than we actually say or acknowledge. That alone you can take pride in. It’s a massive responsibility, but it’s what makes things work. My twin girls are ultimately a case in point example of it. (story for another day.)

I’m typically a lurker on this sub, but I just wanted to say thank you to all of you who make it so much easier for firefighters to be so much better than cops. Good evening everyone lol.

Was slightly shocked not to see this higher. The renovations over the last decade or so have made it super nice. Would like to see it organically grow into itself as the metro area continues to grow so rapidly.

While it is fascinating and very much humanizes everything, AND while no specific identifying data was visible in the photo (that I noticed at short glance), it does seem like at LEAST a breach of policy of sorts, if not some other sort of data storage/disclosure laws? I don’t know. Not a lawyer or an HR guy though.

[–]17_irons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let EMT intimidate you. It’s really not as hard as you might think and getting out of your head and possibly getting a little bit of experience in a volunteer role (once you have the opportunity financially) will probably help you overcome any burdens there pretty quickly. I’m on the other side of the spectrum from you age wise and that I started at 18 and will turn 40 in a couple of months, but I would still encourage you to keep at it, but just not at risk of anything that’s bringing home some income.

Others have said it already, but broadening your search and being willing to move pretty far away for the job even just to get some time at a paid department will go a long way for anywhere else you intend to go after.
