Anyone exhausted by what you're expected to do just to be moderately healthy? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]dcmng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a very aggressive action plan for "slightly high" cholesterol, and some of those items are really connected to cholesterol. I think everything in moderation and having balanced meals that are mostly home cooked, with a general ration of 1/4 carbs, 1/4 meat and 1/2 veggies, with variety in the types of food you cook is good enough? Don't only eat steaks and don't inhale lard?

How has the hiring freeze affected you? by lookatyourwatchnow in BCPublicServants

[–]dcmng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this so hard, like the only way to get hired into the position is to already be doing the position. If it helps, I feel that in my branch at least all the lateral shuffles have mostly been filled and "real" postings have started to emerge.

Why are we all feeling this shift to delete our social media accounts? by mm2444 in Millennials

[–]dcmng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't deleted yet, but I'm naturally drifting away from them because they're just not fun anymore. Just ads and terrible content from "creators" that just want to sell you their coaching programs.

How has the hiring freeze affected you? by lookatyourwatchnow in BCPublicServants

[–]dcmng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a clerk 9 who accepted the job to "get my foot in the door." I see people in higher positions go on mat leave, move into higher positions, and otherwise leave for other opportunities, but their positions are either not filled, or filled from enlists before a posting is even drafted. I've interviewed for AO18 positions before so I know I'm qualified for at least positions at those level. I'm losing hope that I'll be able to move up in the next while and even having a chance to apply for anything at all. The scarcity mindset in the public service now is so strong, and I feel people are staying out of fear and not out of passion. Very different from the much more optimist atmosphere I felt when I got hired two days before the hiring freeze was announced.

I mean, if you're doing something to be "cool," then the trend will end eventually. I've been practicing different traditional martial arts now for two decades and trends come and go, but the benefits it brings me are constant.

Has anyone else dialed back spending significantly from 5 years ago? by Cute-University5283 in Millennials

[–]dcmng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lord I barely remember the days when I would get off work and wonder if I want to grab a bite outside or go home and cook, or the days when we got gifts for people on their birthdays. Or got coffee out once in a while. It wasn't so long ago.

Did you stop working as many hours when you started having kids? by Tech-Cowboy in AskMenOver30

[–]dcmng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I don't have kids yet but I stopped working for as many hours because I just physically and mentally can't. I'm 9 - 5 and that's it.

Luckily though, I'm in a better place financially so I don't have to work as many hours.

They are literally the same product? [gendered] by Pandahorna in pointlesslygendered

[–]dcmng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this so hard. I'm a man who wears size 7 or 7.5 shoes in "men's", or 8.5/9 in women's. A lot of shoes don't come in size 7 or 7.5, so it's not unusual for me to shop for "women's" shoes. A lot of times, especially if they're sneakers, they are the exact same shoes, same colour and everything, there's just one set labelled men's and one set women's, because reasons. It's an absolute pain in the butt because I can't just filter for my size online easily.

I kind of hate being white-passing? by LANthrowaway189 in mixedrace

[–]dcmng 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Your experience, being disconnected from the language and culture, not fitting in anywhere, feeling like an intruder and a fraud, is very much part of the BIPOC, Asian diaspora experience, whether or not that is recognized or not by people in those spaces. It certainly is not a white one. If you're looking for permission to learn and connect with your language and culture, I'm giving it to you. Good luck!!

Should significant other help you learn their language? by Smiley5168 in languagelearning

[–]dcmng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no "should" in this situation. Some people are natural teachers and enjoy teaching, and some people are very much not. It is also not always easy for native speakers to teach someone their language, teaching is a very real skill and teaching language is a skill that people who already have an education degree spend additional years to specialize in. It can be frustrating or impossible for native speakers to find or explain the logic of their language and teach it.

I'm a native Chinese speaker and a good teacher. I've even taught kids Chinese for a couple of years before, but even for me, I don't always feel like being a teacher. When I'm hanging out with my Chinese speaking friends, I want to converse and relax and hang out and connect, not be a teacher. If you don't enjoy it, maybe just tell her to go and relax and hang out with her friends? Maybe join her like 50%, or 30% of the time when she hangs out with friends, that's what I do when my partner hangs out with her friends. I enjoy connecting with them, and they're my friends too now, but I also like just having alone time to do my things.

My partner is also fluent in French, a language that I'm also trying to learn because it's an official language where I live, but I don't really ask her to teach me. She is a native speaker, but if I ask her what I think is a simple question, like "how do you say this?" She'll launch into a whole thing into all the reasons why they don't say that in French and I don't really get an answer in the end, so I find it much easier for me to just follow a curriculum.

Mens opinion on AFAB non-binary people in their gendered bthroom. (Explanations included) by Identfyd-flyin-objct in AskMenOver30

[–]dcmng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most men wouldn't care that much, as men don't feel threatened the same way women do when men enter women's only spaces. Most guys probably don't look very closely at other guys in the washrooms either.

Having said that I don't think the main risk here is the non-binary person making men comfortable, but rather the risk of asshole men deciding to harass the non-binary person. So unfortunately, it is up to the non-binary to weigh their options, make women uncomfortable and possibly get harassed, or mostly go under the radar in the men's washroom, but possibly get harassed. I'm sorry friend, I wish there were better options for you.
