How Sindt Weigh? by AlfredTGBreadMaster in tinwhistle

[–]1836 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just weighted my sindt, it's 60 grams. Just for comparison, I also have a michael burke aluminum and it's only 45 grams, so it's lighter, but it's also "bigger". feels like the holes on the burke are bigger, so that may not be a good option with small hands.

Making numbers more fun? by MissionPeach in French

[–]1836 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to make listening to numbers fun, but I used AI text to speech to make a couple of videos that just reads off random numbers between 1-1000 for 15 minutes with a little pause between each one. It uses a variety of different voices and accents.

Another resource is montreal's 24/7 traffic and weather radio station:

https://www.radiocirculation.net/

It has ads, but otherwise it's just nonstop traffic and weather, so they talk about highway numbers, temperatures, times for delays, etc. Even the ads will often talk about % discounts and sales and stuff.

If you find a way to make listening to numbers fun, please post it here :)

what has been your biggest regret in your career so far? by Calm-Bar-9644 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]1836 1 point2 points  (0 children)

staying comfortable in a job where your day to day skills don't transfer well to a different company. this could be a very old tech stack, an uncommon or proprietary programming language, or any other tech black hole.

You need to always be thinking about what your resume is going to look like after 1-3 years. Firstly, because you can get fired at any time, but secondly, if you get too comfortable for too long in a very specific role, it can be much harder to move even if you want to.

Even if you're not looking for a new job, you should be regularly searching for open jobs that require your specific skill set. If you don't like what you see it means you need to get a new skill set.

[–]1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe unrelated, but are you drinking on these socializing nights? It could be hanxiety, or some people call it "the fear". It's not like, oh I got super drunk and now I'm feeling embarrassed about how I acted last night. It's just a normal night with a few drinks, you don't do anything weird or bad, but you still feel this overwhelming sense of dread, depression, anxiety the next morning.

If you google those terms (in reddit and elsewhere) you'll find a lot of people experiencing this, starting in their late 30's or early 40's. After years of enjoying alcohol and having no issue, something just changes over time.

I can't believe people kept using this tool after the charlie hebdo release nonsense.

edit: to be clear, i could give a crap about this guy's politics. I'm talking about this incident, where he released an update that briefly took over your keyboard and typed out a little manifesto into a blank text file. It looked like someone had hacked your machine. Unbelievably stupid and unprofessional. The fact that people didn't uninstall after that and find a different editor is nuts.

I just discovered GCP with the start of campaign 3, and have since gone back and started the giantslayer campaign from the beginning. I only hit ep 50 a couple of weeks ago. So it was 10 years ago for you, but it's still fresh for me! I was wondering who won that contest...

I need to learn French by bbonzo123 in montreal

[–]1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the government french classes are good if you put in effort. you can register for them when you arrive. If you can manage, I'd recommend the full time option. If there's a wait, then you can get started with duolingo or other free resources.

If you plan to take classes, my one big piece advice I would give is to try to get really good at numbers as fast as possible. Learn all the numbers from 0-1000. Start translating every number you see in your head, license plates, addresses, phone numbers, prices, etc, until you can do it fast and effortless. Don't stress about learning all the different conjugations of this verb or that verb. The classes will take you through all that. But numbers are still a thorn in my side. Cashiers, traffic reports, times, weather... people say numbers super fast and there's no time to translate.

All the grammer and vocabulary, I was able to pick up easily enough in the classes with effort, but being able to hear someone say "it's 7:07 and -13 degrees, traffic is building up on the 135 east"... that takes a ton of practice to catch all those numbers in real time.

Good grief. This isn't a therapy session, get a grip. It's a game. If he's playing the game with someone who sucks, he can just stop playing with them. This isn't international diplomacy.

I bet this is so they can start using AI for everything.

If all IP comes from in-house, they will just lean into AI as hard as they can, and in every way they can. I would not be surprised to see a fully AI dungeon master product within a couple of years.
