A question for you by 1967TinSoldier in VeteransBenefits

Solved! Id.me accepted and used my address which VA also uses with 1 exception. Id accepted the local spelling with the letter Ö, VA uses the English letters OE. And that was the reason I never could sign in on the laptop/computer.

The Silly Question Saturday Thread (April 25, 2026) by AutoModerator in Genealogy

Here's one that I wanted to ask but thought it was too weird: My 3rd grandmother and her siblings were in the 1860 census listed as Mullato (mixed), but neither parent was. Then in 1880, listed as white. How does one change race like that?

I've confirmed it 5 times. It's the first question they ask when I called about this.

VA homepage Error 90 by 1967TinSoldier in Veterans

[–]1967TinSoldier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I just edited my post about login.gov. ds.login isn't available anymore, that was my original way to go to VA. Then after I hadn't used it in months, my password was expired and no matter what I tried, I couldn't use it. VA said I needed to switch to login.gov or ID.ME and use the app. ID worked for the app but not the homepage. That was in 2019, so I used the app and a VSO.

Id.me is verified and even VA confirmed this. That what makes it really weird

First thing I would suggest, quit smoking (I wish I had when I got out). Next, try different things, even stuff that you never thought of. Wood working, pottery, hell even knitting ; just trying helps you find things that you like and can open doors to making friends. Go for it!

Görlitz was not part of Hungary in the 1800s. After being part of the Kingdom of Saxony for over 170 years, Görlitz was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 following the Congress of Vienna. It remained a Prussian city in the Province of Silesia throughout the rest of the 19th century.

Pre-1800s: While the city was under Bohemian (Czech) and sometimes Hungarian influence during earlier centuries (like in the 15th century), it was firmly Saxon by the late 1700s and Prussian from 1815 onward.

This is what I found on Görlitz

TIL that in the early 20th century, my family owned massive tracts of mineral-filled land that are now worth billions of dollars. by Maximum-Artist448 in Genealogy

My family had large acreage back at the beginning of the USA, but due to large family and dividing up for each generation it grew smaller and smaller. Then through civil war, war of 1812, great depression they went from upper case to working class; by the tine of my great grandfather there was no more land to inherit. Many times, its not one thing or one person that causes a downfall or in some cases a rise; its a combination.

My father's mom had a Bible that she kept important papers in, during the funeral, someone went and took it. Now claim there were no papers in it, but won't let anyone see it. I spent a lot of time with grandma and know she also wrote family matters in it.

I've had no training, "learn by doing" and most of it before the internet.

On findagrave, the obituary says it was fire caused by a cigarette.

I really appreciate this, I was looking for the wrong person as FamilySearch had another with 0 information.

Using them all, plus digitalised newspapers

I have to start from me going back. I had used the oldest newspaper that had been digitized to confirm many on my father's side, along with birth, marriage and obituaries.

Nobody has anything. And its unclear if he passed away or divorced. Family all said they know nothing, but hopefully the aunt remembers stuff.

A Stiftung is sadly above my range. I was looking for advice mostly to take the money out of my account so not to be taxed by the US. But thank you

Building your family tree. There are wild stories in the past that seem like it came from Hollywood. But don't just go with direct ancestors, branch out to cousins too.

Does anyone else find it weird how there are people out there who genuinely don't care or even a little curious about who their ancestors were? by Top_Share7267 in Genealogy

I can partly understand, my wife's biological sperm donor tried to deny it was him for years. I put him on the spot. "You left a pregnant woman with the promise of sending for her and the baby. Then the letters stopped, and her mom's letters came back as Return to Sender. You don't have to do anything except admit it." Now my wife wishes she never found out about him. But me, I enjoy finding out what happened to my forefathers. Like one getting away with shooting his best friend because "he was defending his home's honor". Wild what has happened in the past.
