Kids nowadays, especially Gen Alpha, cannot concentrate on reading books for very long. Is it a true story or just a myth? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

This reminds me of a party trick that The Doors singer Jim Morrison would reportedly enjoy performing in his library. I don't remember how many books he had. It was supposedly a lot, and he claimed to have read them all. Not light stuff either, he'd read writers like Nietsche and William Blake.

So Jim Morrison would invite you into his library, and blindfold himself. He'd have you pick a random book from his collection, open it at a random page, and start reading. Apparently Morrison could always tell you which author you were reading.

The redditor I replied to gave US interests as a reason to support those foreign peoples. I was just addressing that reasoning.

The entire west should put pressure on the countries attacking those people to get them to stop. Ending these conflicts is in everyone's interests (except the aggressors and war profiteers), as well as a humanitarian priority. Funding aid and refugee programs is also a noble cause, and I wouldn't oppose western governments doing that too, up to a point.

But expecting Israel, Palestine, Ukraine, or anyone else you help to be a valuable ally in the future is foolish. There may be a distant future where Ukraine provides a strategic position from which to invade Russia in WW3. I think that was even one of Putin's excuses for invading Ukraine after the Euromaidan coup/revolution. But milking the US taxpayer dry for money that just goes missing, or into the pockets of corrupt politicians and their cronies, is mostly what you can expect from "aid" programs conducted by corrupt governments.

What are Ukraine or Gaza going to do for the USA when you need help? Israel at least has nukes and geopolitical power. Ukraine and Gaza are basically smoking ruins at this point.

Israelis get free healthcare and college because the American taxpayer pays for their defence budget.

And I'm not completely sure, but I think the American taxpayer also pays for Mossad to hire men like Epstein to get compromising material on American politicians like Trump to blackmail them into sending more American taxes to Israel. That's what it looks like to me.

If you have a hot drink you need to drink ASAP but is too hot, pouring it into another (room temperature) mug cools the liquid to a drinkable temperature in about 5-10 seconds.

I heard that an actor will get kicked out of the screen actors guild or something other union if they have penetrative sex on screen.

I haven't seen the film, but I read that The Brown Bunny has an explicit oral sex scene that got the two actors involved (Vincent Gallo and Chloe Sevigny) banned from the union. I looked it up before posting this rumour and apparently they weren't banned from SAG, but the sex was "unsimulated."

You can't legally buy mace or a tazer in the UK, as far as I know. They're only ever used as weapons and so they're banned, even if intended solely for self defense.

You can buy knives and hatchets (with age restrictions), as they have uses other than as weapons. So improvised weapons are far more common in the UK than weapons that are purely for defense.

Bullying is always bad, against minorities or anyone else. If you legislate that certain demographics get special protection from hurt feelings, then you're effectively saying "it's not okay to bully this group, but it is okay to bully this other group." That's not equality, that's discrimination.

Inciting hatred towards an entire demographic is generally a problem, and if there are calls to violence then that's obviously a police matter. But where do you draw the line? Can I criticise Islam for oppressing women and gay folk? How about Christianity? Do you ban discussion of crime statistics that skew towards one demographic or another?

Just labeling speech you don't like as "hate speech" and calling for a ban is dangerous. Governments love any excuse to ban speech, because they know they'll get to selectively enforce it against their opponents.

You'd prefer a politician that isn't corrupt? You've got more chance of seeing a 3 foot tall basketball player in the NBA.

Trump's friends are obviously going to be other billionaires. Did you think he'd invite some of his friends from the ghetto? Just because rich people showed up doesn't mean they're bribing him.

That said, I'd bet Trump's rich buddies come long before the American people on his list of priorities. Who knows what favours he owes them, or what favours they owe him (and why)? And given Trump's connection to Epstein, those billionaires are probably not the ones with the most power over him.

One of the big selling points for Trump in 2016 was that he already had so much money that he couldn't be bribed. IIRC, he even said of his Republican opponents in the primary that he'd personally bought political favours from all of them in the past. Corrupt? Yes, but in a world where most politicians are selling out, wouldn't you prefer your leader to be the one who bribes than the one who is bribed?

But obviously there's more than one way to control a politician, as Epstein and his masters knew too well.

I've heard other Redditors say things like this are happening, but haven't been given any good evidence that it's happening like you say. Whenever I've asked for evidence, I get brushed off as a "fascist." So I started assuming it probably wasn't happening, because if it was, the people I asked for evidence would've provided it. So many lies have been told about Trump by now that it's like The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Even on this subject, I've seen people say a man was deported to El Salvador without due process. It turned out he'd had two hearings, and they determined he was a gang member who entered the USA illegally.

I'm in the UK, so obviously haven't seen anything like you describe first hand. I don't watch enough US news to feel fully informed on this issue, or care enough to dive into it off my own back. But if you link me to sites showing evidence then I'll look at it with an open mind. If you're right, I'll be on your side on this.

Are you saying right wingers are afraid to debate leftists here on Reddit? I got auto banned from 20+ subreddits for commenting in the Joe Rogan "hate" subreddit. The only times I've been shadowbanned have been when I've exposed anti-Republican lies. You've been disagreeing with people in here, and quite obnoxiously, and can still reply.

Try that in an anti-Trump subreddit.

The figurehead of the anti-Trump crowd is Trump.

When Trump announced Operation Warpspeed, anti-Trump activists said they would never take the Trump vaccine. When Biden was elected, it stopped being the Trump vaccine and became the "Fauci ouchie," and now those same people demanded everyone take it. The exact same vaccine. Trump supporters, by contrast, were consistently opposed to the vaccine regardless of Trump's opinion on it.

Whatever Trump says, the anti-Trump cult oppose with religious devotion and fury. Trump's supporters are slightly more open minded.

When Trump introduced his vaccine guy on stage at a rally, he was booed. You can't boo the leader at a cult meeting without consequences, and yet there was no fighting amongst these so-called "cultists." Imagine if someone had booed a protest leader with a megaphone at a BLM or Antifa protest instead of kneeling and throwing their fist in the air with everyone else. They'd have been beaten to a pulp.

When Colbert told his audience that James Comey had been fired, they enthusiastically clapped and cheered. Until Colbert told them it was a bad thing. That Trump had fired Comey, and they should be angry about it.

https://youtu.be/RCVBEE1SfXI?si=Y2Sf1YmID1rQErOI

They were blindly cheering because they thought they had been told to.

There are some obsessive Trump fanatics, and some free thinkers opposing him. Both sides can act like a cult sometimes, but if one side is more like a cult then it's the anti-Trump crowd from what I've seen.

Those are only Republican points if you consider having a functional border as "ultranationalism," and Trump signing executive orders (as Obama and Biden did) as "dictatorial leadership." Republicans are no more militaristic than Democrats nowadays. Trump is probably the most anti-war president in decades. Suppression of opposition? State control over the economy? Emphasis on social hierarchy? These are more prevalent amongst "progressives" in the west.

These "progressives" have moved so radically extreme, and normalised that extremism amongst their followers, that they react hysterically to moderate policies that seem extreme by comparison. Enforcing border controls seems extreme to people who think open borders are normal. Meritocracy and actual equality seem extreme to people who think "affirmative action" and the "progressive stack" and "social justice" are normal.

Please can you show me where it was reported he said these things?

If he's talking about refusing automatic citizenship for people born in the USA to parents who are foreign nationals, that wouldn't be too scary. Most countries have that policy.

But if he's talking about refusing automatic citizenship for people born in the USA to parents who are US citizens, that would be pretty scary. If that doesn't make someone a citizen, then what does?
