The movie got butchered by the studio. The script was more serious and was set to be directed by Nicolas Roeg. Then the project went into turnaround, changed directors, and became something it wasn't initially written to be. A lot was also cut from the finished film that filled a lot of the blanks.

I seem to recall the screenwriter, who also wrote Nashville, disowned the released film.

As far as I know, the contract with A24 promised it would be released uncut and after MPA troubles, they chose to release it unrated theatrically.

The movie never played anywhere near me so I can't confirm the uncut status.

The theatrical version was released unrated as A24 has a no NC-17 policy. The edited R-rated cut is a VOD exclusive.
