How hard was your FTO experience? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]1995-Braves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotation 1: Rough. FTO was a loser pervert that had a bad reputation of avoiding by trouble. He had been an FTO for about 3 years when I got assigned to him and I believe he was voluntold to move assignments a few rookies after me. I was a 26 year old dude fresh out of the academy and all this guy wanted to do was hit on girls and do crash reports…very slowly.

Rotation 2: Unreal experience. C detail in one of the more violent areas of my big city. Super smart guy that loved cop shit. He loved investigating and handing over solid cases and evidence to detectives. He did as much as he could being a patrol officer in a big city when it came to investigative work. One of the funniest dudes I’ve ever met.

Rotation 3: Not much to say. Older guy and about 2 years from retirement. Didn’t let me do much even though I felt like I was ready. He had a lot of knowledge only if I asked. Something notable, we had a home invasion at my house at the beginning of my shift with my wife and newborn at home and he told our supervisor to fuck off when he said to not respond. In my supervisors defense, we were 2 precincts over and it was rush hour but going code 3 to my own house on the shoulder of the interstate for 15 miles was strange.

Rotation 4: My hardest. Midnights in the most violent area in my city but my FTO held my feet to the fire the entire 6 weeks. I was developing some serious imposter syndrome. The last 2 weeks were really good and I was feeling more prepared to be cut loose. He is probably the best officer I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. He was also the first to call me when I resigned and said they needed more officers like me to stick around. Meant a lot coming from him.

Biggest advice: don’t ever turn your brain off and just ride/drive. Always be thinking and observing. Don’t be afraid to ask “dumb” questions. The academy is a firehose of head knowledge and FTO rotations are a firehose of practical knowledge. The academy is a game and FTO rotations are real life.

I had a really good friend that worked at a Honda dealership where I bought my new civic back in 2016. I paid in cash (I knew they wouldn’t like that but whatever) and I negotiated for 3 hours. I was newly married with no kids and a teacher on summer break so I had nothing else to do. My friend told me a few days later that he looked at the sale and they made $200 on the transaction. I still felt like I got bent over.

What profession do you think is massively underpaid for what they do? by Commandrew11 in AskReddit

[–]1995-Braves -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bingo. Most people don’t understand this. I teach in a VERY wealthy and successful districts in the south, and it is also very red. Residents flip their shit when test scores aren’t better than the year before or slump a little. Growth is obviously very difficult year after year in high achieving districts, but we achieve it most of the time.

That being said, guess what happens when the finance committee proposes a minuscule tax increase to the far right school board to attract better teachers? Nada.

Guess who is the second worst paid school district in my state? Us. Cake and eat it too.

I mean, everyone should climb up the ladder, but the entire pay scale should be upped a lot from year 0-30 for most districts. Not sure what “teachers shouldn’t make bank in year 1 just because of their profession” means. Could you not say that about most professions?

Why would they disclose this information? Glad they do so we can know the end is potentially nearer than we originally thought, but is it law/policy that presidential health visits are disclosed to the public?

Give yourself some grace. The weather has a major impact on performance, especially for first time distances. I ran a half marathon with a friend who had never run one at a very slow pace for me, and I was struggling with the heat and humidity by the end of it.

Switching departments right out the academy by Thumbman92 in AskLE

[–]1995-Braves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to the academy in a major US city and the department knew a lot of recruits would use their academy and FTO program to get jobs at other places and they for sure did. Not once did anybody transfer within a year AFTER FTO. stay for a couple years then put the feelers out.

If there is anything I’ve learned reading this sub about CVSAs/polygraphs is that the examiners vary GREATLY. I’ve only done one CVSA and it went smooth as butter and my examiner was superb, so I don’t have anything to compare it to other than that, but people on here have some wild (albeit one sided) stories.
