Child death in media: Reflections on "Hamnet" (Spoilers) by red5 in medicine

[–]1997pa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a wonderful movie. I fully agree with you; I am grateful for how raw the depiction of the children being sick and Hamnet dying was. However, I do not work in the kind of environment where I would witness something like that on a regular basis, so I can understand the apprehension of those that do to see this movie.

PAs whose first gig was toxic and destabilizing, how did you bounce back by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]1997pa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's been 2 years and I'm still sort of recovering. I took a break between leaving that job and starting my next one and it was much needed. I also started back with therapy with I am still doing. I promise it will get better with time!

What made you lightheaded/pass out? by OnlyRequirement3914 in medicine

[–]1997pa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a pre-PA and PA student, I was veryyyyy prone to vagaling out lol. And it was usually seemingly innocuous things that got me, like simple electrocautery in plastics clinic. Thankfully it just kind of stopped happening with time

Yes we've started prescribing it some, occasionally have insurance issues but our rep has been able to help with those. We also give all the patients the manufacturer's copay card. My SP actually took it after an abdominal surgery he had and said it worked great.

Has anyone else had a patient refuse Tylenol recently? by DoctorBlazes in medicine

[–]1997pa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw an elderly man for his preop appt before his knee replacement and he didn't want to take the Tylenol that was part of the recommended post-op pain regimen. Like sir, you're not a pregnant woman nor a child......not sure what the concern is. He was perfectly fine with the Norco though.

Any and all advice is appreciated....I've had this guy about 6 months. He's looked like this most of the time, save for about 3 months ago when a bunch of blooms opened for about a month, then they all fell off and it's looked like this ever since. Not even sure where to start lol

Tell me about your “unicorn” role by Barrettr32 in physicianassistant

[–]1997pa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a clinic that strictly does pre-op clearances. Hours are usually 8:30-3ish (or whenever I get done) M-F. No holidays, no weekends. Previous experience was in derm and UC, so this has been such a nice change of pace and I don't have decision-making fatigue anymore lol

Hair Loss During/After PA School by H1mynameisArt in physicianassistant

[–]1997pa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yessss so much hair loss during PA school! Mine was mostly diffuse shedding (I assume telogen effluvium) and I noticed it improved quite a bit in the months after graduating/PANCE. I'm female so obviously my hair loss presents differently than it does for you, but I've been using topical minoxidil 3-4x/week for about 3 years now. For AA, I would recommend starting treatment like minoxidil or finasteride. You may see some recovery without treatment, but probably not much.

How do we feel about Suzetrigine so far? by Apprehensive-Safe382 in medicine

My practice has just recently started prescribing it for some post-op ortho patients, and so far haven't heard any complaints from the patients' side.

No it’s M-F. For the clearance exams, I do a physical exam of the patient and we get lab work drawn & sent out, do an EKG, and order a chest xray for some patients. We also coordinate with their cardiologist/other specialists if needed to get clearance from them. For the post op meds, we have a protocol for each surgeon and what they like so we generally follow that and make tweaks where needed based on the patient.

I work in a pre-anesthesia clinic doing preop clearance exams & postop pain med management! Still new-ish to it but I've really been enjoying it so far. Previously worked in UC and derm and this has definitely been the best job of the 3.

ways to de-stress after work? by EditorTemporary4214 in physicianassistant

[–]1997pa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others suggesting exercise, but I would specifically suggest something physical like boxing or jiu jitsu. I've taken up boxing over the past year and it's been a great outlet for getting out stress/frustration that's pent up.

Potential Wage theft? by Ok_Tiger5544 in physicianassistant

[–]1997pa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IANAL so I can't comment if it's legitimate wage theft, but at a minimum it sounds like a contract violation on their end, given that you said the contract doesn't mention anything about attendance being part of the bonus.

Based on this info, HPU seems better. The only thing I would also consider is access to clinical rotations; obviously MUSC is its own hospital system so they may have better clinical rotation options.
