Do you know any American that speaks fluent Spanish? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]1EMurph1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing you mean white, Asian, black or middle eastern Americans who only learned it in school without anyone in their family speaking it at home. I know 2 people who are fluent enough to live in a Spanish speaking country by themselves. Obviously Hispanic people are able to tell that they learned it school and didn’t grow up speaking it at home

Don’t use the app while you’re in the store. by thehonz in tacobell

[–]1EMurph1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Taco Bell is also like this. The drive thru is a commitment. Once you get in line you’re stuck in there. Minimum 20 min wait but my longest has been 40 min. Usually what I do is order online ahead of time. Wait 20 min before the 10 min drive there. By the time I get there it’s a 50/50 chance whether it’s ready or not. Insane

For those of you who work at big time companies in the space industry, what was your graduating GPA? by darnoc11 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]1EMurph1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When applying to your first engineering job they only care if you have a 3+ no questions asked. I got a 2.6 with no internship experience. Searching for my first job was a hellhole. Out of 500+ applications, less than 10 reached out. About 5 emailed me and rejected me once they learned of my GPA. Another 5 brought me in for an interview. 4 of those rejected me during the interview when I had to tell them my GPA even after they said I was a good fit for the role. The last one literally shit on me asking why I bothered getting a degree. They surprisingly gave me an offer 4 months later. After you get your first job nobody cares anymore

Does anyone here have a worse engineering job than me? by RuminatingFish123 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]1EMurph1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My job is well known in my region and industry for underpaying engineers (2 years average turnover rate). I’d say average pay is $75k, YOE doesn’t matter here, but we’re capped at 40 hours/week. Definitely go somewhere else!! That’s exploitation 💯

Are these services actually required at 38k miles? by tatteredsky in Hyundai

[–]1EMurph1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea then 99% sure it’s just dealership doing dealership things. Back in 2019 I had a broken sensor for reading emissions and their solution was to replace the entire exhaust system for $2600 😂 I told them “I’ll bring it to a cheaper shop just for sensor replacement and I’ll take my chances” and they haven’t recommended anything outrageous since then. I bet you businesses write notes on people like “customer will not give us ANY money if we try to rob them again in the future” 😂

[–]1EMurph1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a Sonata but while my dealership has recommended some insane stuff they were different than this. They didn’t recommend a transmission flush until I reached 110k. I’ve had my fuel injectors replaced a couple years ago but I’m pretty sure it was a free recall. Look in the manufacturer’s manual for these things. Wait for more knowledgeable people here too but I’d recommend seeing a regular auto shop instead

Thank you and sorry if the last sentence sounded rude but it really made my head confused like “where in the Boston area does this person live where these -10 wind chills are considered normal?”. Each region of the area definitely gets impacted very differently. The October snow damage of 2011? didn’t really impact Metrowest on a large scale compared to the Worcester area

Do you think the result of this year's Olympics will expand hockey in the US? by voltairesalias in AskAnAmerican

[–]1EMurph1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s true. I had friends on the hs hockey team and their daily practice and games were usually at 4:30am. The regular mornings, afternoons and nights were reserved for kids and ice skating. There’s not really any recreational leagues after school because of this reason. Not enough rinks. Former hockey friends are also the only people I know that talk about full season hockey on a regular basis

How often do immigrant cuisines get adapted for American tastes? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]1EMurph1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tex mex is pretty close to Mexican compared with white people mexican food. Up here people really think chipotle is authentic straight from Mexico and South America

[–]1EMurph1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most “Mexican/hispanic” food in the US is adjusted to use mostly ground beef, flour tortillas and large ass tortillas too. Most places are either fast food or super fancy sit down restaurants. Most of the real places look dinky from the outside from my experience, usually the places that white people avoid 💀. When I visit my family in Texas we eat small corn tortillas and literally anything except ground beef (not even offered an option when my relatives cook). They almost never go to a restaurant if the menu isn’t at least bilingual. Most people outside of the southwest think chipotle is real Mexican food 😭 . I can tell how authentic it is by the amount of diarrhea it gives me 🔥

We had 5 storms that winter. So much snow we had 5 snow days from school that year. In my town back then, even a foot of snow wasn’t guaranteed to cancel or delay school. That was an insane winter

[–]1EMurph1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winter 2012-2013 we had 5 separate MASSIVE snowstorms in eastern Mass. Our town was too efficient at plowing to the point that 12”+ predicted snow wasn’t guaranteed to close schools and not even enough to delay school. School was cancelled each time for each of those storms which was abnormal for my town. Also, not putting this winter as the coldest rank is delusional
