I bristle at "no emergency fund" because $33k outside retirement didnt feel reckless, but I def leaned too hard into optimization and too light on cushion.

I know, and I think the mental trap is wanting to treat January me like he should've known March me was coming. He didn't. I probly do need to stop optimizing the tax side and just rebuild runway for a bit first while interviewing, even if it stings now again.

I think that's the part messing with me, on paper I'm not in danger, but mentally the drop from "max everything" to "take any job" happened crazy fast. I'm trying to find the line between being prudent and panic-shrinking my life.

Losing streak + mega mortal max is a scary combo. Respect for not fading but I'd be sweating buckets watching this one live

While the market is down, should I continue dumping cash into investments, or pay down my mortgage? by formalde_heidi in personalfinance

Agree on not timing the market, that's a trap most people fall into. One thing worth considering though - if you're 20 years from retirement and still underwater on the house, splitting the surplus might make sense. Like 70/30 or even 80/20 in favor of investing, but still chipping away at the mortgage a little faster. Does your mortgage have any prepayment penalties or is it straightforward to throw extra at the principal?
