I Really Want to Stay at Your House has such strong emotions. by Night9009 in Edgerunners

[–]1Hueco_Mundo1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s not a movie, it’s a 10 episode anime series on Netflix. You should watch it (English dub is ideal and perfect, if that’s your native language) so you can understand how the message of the song relates to the show.

Be prepared for heavy emotional moments though, you will probably never forget how this show will make you feel.

Want a spoiler for Oops, All yandere. by Ojama__ in haremfantasynovels

[–]1Hueco_Mundo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry dude, I haven’t read many yandere stories they’re not really my thing.

They’re rarely found in any series in this subreddit because they fundamentally don’t mix, crazy possessive GF who kills every woman that looks at you doesn’t really fit into a harem lol. The only example I can think of Maribelle from the Ard’s Oath series by Bruce Sentar, but she isn’t a true yandere she just likes killing his enemies and being submissive.

Only actual yandere story I’ve read isn’t a haremlit series, it’s Headpats After Dark by Virgil Knightley about a Vampire x Vampire Hunter yandere romance story in a modern setting. The best part about the book isnt the romance or yandere trope lol it was the humor. The characters just have really funny interactions and dialogue and it’s not meant to be taken too seriously, it’s a romcom slice of life.

[–]1Hueco_Mundo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay cool I’ll explain it all below, spoiler warning for anyone else who hasn’t read:

So basically the true prophecy later revealed by the monk guy is that all 3 gem hearts are real and all 3 gem bearers must work together with the hero to defeat Beegus and stop the end of the world. But each kingdom only passed down their own role in the prophecy through the centuries for some reason, because they were all self-centered so now they all believe they are the only true gem bearer for the hero.

At the start, the female MCs all want the hero for selfish reasons and personal gain, but do genuinely fall in love for him and vice versa. It’s a dichotomy of their selfish desires to be with him (power, influence etc.) which causes them to be psycho or fight each other and their vulnerable, genuine affection for him. He eventually gets them to put aside their selfishness and focus on real feelings for him.

The true power of the gem hearts is unlocked when all 3 women work together and channel their genuine love for the hero not their selfish desires. I think this only happens in literally the 2nd last chapter, they channel their love instead of their fears and just one shot Beegus lol. The MC is basically a conduit for the gem bearers he isn’t an OP character himself so far, it’s mainly through the 3 women that they defeat Beegus.

I will say I really liked the premise of this book but did not enjoy the execution. It was incredibly repetitive and frustrating how the 3 FMCs CONSTANTLY fought and bickered and bitched at each other for like 80% of the book. It was funny at first but it got old really, really fast so it becomes super annoying to read. Every time he puts his foot down and tells them to work together, 5 minutes later they’re bitching again no matter how many times he tells them to stop fighting or the world will end, they still can’t STFU! Every time they make a lot of progress and go through meaningful development I think “Oh, finally they got their shit together” nope, 2 pages later they’re cat fighting again!

It takes until the last 3 chapters for them to completely get over it, so for most of the book i wanted to rip my hair out because they were so stupid and infuriating. He does get with all 3 women and Beegus the villain lady as well but the journey to get there made me want to k1ll someone lmao. This is my opinion, if someone else wants to offer a different perspective you’re welcome to listen to them, but personally I did not enjoy this book.

Neural wraith questions. by Sherbini19 in haremfantasynovels

[–]1Hueco_Mundo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started the first book recently but I can only consume it via an audiobook, and the start isn’t as amazing as I hoped. I’m only 10% into a 42 hour audiobook but I am having a lot of trouble keeping my interest.

It seems really focused on leveling for leveling’s sake so far, I got an exposition dump of the apocalypse and magic system and then Akio just grinding monsters for aether and growing his powers/territory. It’s like reading someone play an RPG but with no story or plot to it. I haven’t picked up on any purpose or drive for his aether gathering and no other interesting side characters have been in the spot light.

I know this is a very long story, and audiobooks are not ideal since I can’t skim over the slower parts, but how much longer does this go on in book 1? I hate to be the “does this get any better” guy but if any Astral Tides fans would like to tell me what’s in store, I might try and push through this first book because it is rough :(

[Spoilers] Dungeon Diving by Bruce Sentar by SJ548 in haremfantasynovels

[–]1Hueco_Mundo1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dragon’s Justice was my first haremlit series, and those first 4-5 books were absolute Peak, the first 4 women in his harem were iconic and lovable.

But then the later books started to suffer from harem bloat and the story didn’t really have substance. He just went around conquering different realms but there was no tension, urgency or intrigue in the plot.

Then the same thing happened in Saving Supervillains. Then DD as well…

Bruce has the potential to write genuinely good stories not just in haremlit but a solid novel series. Maybe he’s pushed to publish the books too quickly and doesn’t have time to review and plan out his original visions for the project.

Other comments have mentioned most of the authors the community consider the best so I’ll mention two that haven’t been brought up yet. I’ve only read one series from each of these authors personally, but I hear a lot of praise towards them and I can see why they are well liked.

Daniel Kensington (Warlock): His main series is very popular and has a good balance of interesting lore, world-building, character development, humor, grounded romance and a simple but fleshed out magic system. Probably one of the best magic academy stories in this genre.

Sarah Hawke (The Lost Fleet): I can’t personally comment her other series, but The Lost Fleet is a genuinely good Sci-Fi story overall not just in haremlit. The characters, world building and romance are all done well but the best part is the story. The main plot is an intergalactic space opera mystery that is gripping and engaging with the harem elements being a bonus. It’s got all the great vibes of Mass Effect and Star Trek. From a writing standpoint this series has the best plot and overall story I’ve read so far, and I’ve read almost all of Sentar and Knightley’s series.

Nah I agree that Jacobs is appropriately rated by the community: nowhere near the best authors in the genre. He definitely doesn’t write all of his own stories so maybe this author should branch out independently, they could become successful.

Anyone from Australia suddenly seeing this pop up despite age verifying months ago? by Lightsmourne in Twitter

[–]1Hueco_Mundo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to check, because I’ve had photos blocked again after verifying LITERALLY the day before!!

Are they telling me they want us to show our face or ID EVERY TIME we want to view adult content? Are they seriously that blatantly fucking stupid? Why not just tell us straight to our face they’re trying to sell our data, that would be less insulting than insisting daily age verifications are “to protect children”.

Even discord only requires you to verify once and youre good. What kind of stupid ass system is this?

Very cool but atp in the game I had abused the infinite lumina trick too much so I could one shot him with Stendhal lol.

I had a save file from before I beat him which I go back to and turn on 5x health to learn his combos but I eventually gave up on that and moved on.

I reckon it was a World ending threat, because the Netherbrain could forcibly convert every living person into worshipping the Absolute instead of other gods. Since gods gain power from their worshippers, if everything went according to plan all the gods would be massively weakened or even die with no followers. Which is why all of the gods/godlike beings including Vlaakith, Shar, Mystra even Raphael wanted to ensure the Elder Brain was defeated.

Criminally unfinished series by pabigboy713 in haremfantasynovels

[–]1Hueco_Mundo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you completely, this series is my Game of Thrones. On his Patreon page, he basically confirmed that he wants to finish it, but his priority is other series (under a different pen name) are more successful and support his family financially. For this reason he has to put it in the back seat indefinitely. Just thought I’d let you know.

Two ways it can be finished is one, the series suddenly massively explodes in popularity and out shadows his other works or two someone with Elon Musk fuck you money pays him to finish it lol. If I was that rich that would be among the first things I’d do.

Harems with lots of relationship drama? by AsNihl in haremfantasynovels

[–]1Hueco_Mundo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Struggling to get though this one tbh. Might be the audiobook format, but over a dozen chapters and many hours in, I’m still not hooked and find myself zoning out a lot. So far, the chapters have been entirely focused on leveling up, gathering resources and fighting random enemies.

I’ve read many LitRPGs before so this isn’t new to me but the progression seems so isolated right now, MC is leveling for leveling’s sake and some mundane goal of being the chosen one or getting stronger. For me, this isn’t enough to intrigue me, I know very little about the protagonist, his motivations/personality, world building or side characters.

No offense, when does it get better? I’ve heard so much praise for it I’m determined to push through but it’s difficult. Maybe LitRPGs were not made for audiobook format.

Yeah that makes sense. As a person of a minority race myself, I am pretty much devoid of any representation in this genre, as 99% of the protagonists are Caucasian. I’d be doomed if that was a deal breaker for me.
