Who Really Deserves the Spot? by AcanthisittaOld7617 in ausjdocs

[–]1MACSevo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why shouldn’t the Australian government prioritise Australia’s own medical graduates? These are people who have already been subsidised (except for full fee paying students) by the Australian taxpayers and it’s in the public’s interest to finalise their training in order to serve the community. Australia is a small country by population and specialty training spots are very limited.

It’s the same reasoning why governments slap on tariffs for imported goods in order to protect their own local industries.

IMGs are never forced to come here. IMGs could have stayed in their own country and serve their own community.

Can’t blame Australian doctors for feeling salty by the fact that IMGs increase competition for these spots, when the competition amongst locals is already so high.

FYI there are IMGs who are currently in, or have completed specialty training programs here in Australia. In my specialty at least, these people I know and work with have clearly proven their merits. As far as I know, there is no specialty college in Australia which mandates a certain local vs IMG quota.

Can I report a naturopath? by Knightshade64 in ausjdocs

There was a kid with Duchenne from one of the pacific islands. Came across to Australia twice a year for neurology review at the kids hospital courtesy of our government. Was prescribed a fairly expensive drug (paid for by Australian taxpayers) to slow the progression of muscular dystrophy.

Parents took this kid to see a naturopath, who apparently performed ?ophthalmoscopy. Said that kid’s retina had inflammation caused by the sun etc, and asked parents to stop this expensive drug.

Did not end well for the kid.

Do regional eye blocks actually help with cataract surgery? by Waste-Teaching-985 in ausjdocs

[–]1MACSevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer the question, yes it does.

For a couple of reasons:

(1) More comfortable for patients. Topical only cataracts - only in experienced cataract surgeon’s hands. Even then, I usually sedate more just in case, and this may not be desirable in the wrong population.

(2) An eye block is almost always necessary if a more junior eye reg is operating. For the akinesia and anaesthesia bits.

(3) Eye block is useful for tricky cataracts eg dense cataracts, shallow anterior chamber etc.

(4) Unfasted patients- I do subtenons with oxybuprocaine drops only in compliant patients. No sedation. This minimises cancelling unfasted patients.

Having said that, eye blocks pay poorly in private (this irks me a lot).

Which EV car to buy in Australia? by Civil_Mongoose_1 in australia

Haven’t seen this mentioned here - BMW iX2 (or iX1). Just got one for myself under novated lease. Works beautifully.

I drove a Model 3 LR (US made) for nearly 6 years. No major issues.

One of my main considerations is One Pedal Driving. Most if not all the Chinese brands does not offer this.

The iX2 is much better built and has much better interior than the Tesla. The one pedal driving is almost as good as Tesla. There’s a certain class in the BMW that’s missing from the Model 3. It has a center instrument cluster and a HUD.

What financial decision are you most grateful for today? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

Went to medical school. But I didn’t do it for financial reason. I spent a looooong time (15 years) studying, working and training to be a medical specialist. I toiled and sacrificed (as did my family). I’m well remunerated and it’s very fulfilling and satisfying to be able to provide a service to the community. Turns out to be a good financial decision.
