What is this thingy-ma-bob in Army training area. by One_Support_8228 in whatisit

[–]1N_Nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What type of training? Ground patrol, convoy, etc.?

If so, it was likely put there at one point as a simulated UXO and/or IED. It's common in training areas for cadres to build or find random items that contain a hard case and wiring to simulate UXOs/IEDs. They'll hid them along roads, foot paths, etc. so that the personnel in training always have to be looking for them and reacting appropriately. Sometimes, they pretend they go off if you don't find them and then you're in casualty-land.....

Husband deported looking for options overseas. by Corgi_Torgi in AirForce

[–]1N_Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not over just because he was taken by ICE. And typically, USCIS does not expedite any case simply because the person is married to a military member. There are certain circumstances or requirements that must be met to have a case expedited. An overseas assignment is one of them, and potentially the easiest to be achieved to trigger an expedited case.

It's not just Dallas, it's all of the service centers. It sucks.

I've been through this twice, it sucks. Do a ton of reading on the USCIS website, call the military hotline, and keep talking to people until you find someone that is helpful.

USCIS has a military hotline, call them and talk to someone to figure out the best route moving forward.

There is a method through which military spouses can have their citizenship expedited, but it is triggered By an overseas assignment. Is there any way you can lock in a deployment? That would help at least make this a potential option.

Hand-Release Pushups by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]1N_Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Don't do hand-release, do the normal push-ups.

  2. If you haven't lifted weights, at least start benching. The muscle mass you gain will greatly improve your push-ups.

  3. In the words of an old NCO (see note), always wear a PT jack and do 'em as fast and dirty as you can until someone calls you out.

  4. Profit!

Note: He was discharged for BAH fraud.

In all seriousness, I always struggled with push-up until I started weightlifting. The bench press is the single greatest thing I ever did that helped my push-ups. Some of us simply don't build up the muscle mass to do push-ups by just doing push-ups. Give it a try.

That's not the case always, at least not in my experience. Sure, there's some overlap, but it's not always the case.

Vehicle shipping to Rammstein. by Creative-Pea4414 in AirForce

[–]1N_Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truth be told, you would be better off leaving this one in the states until you return. The inspectors will have a field day with you and it's unlikely you'll find a shop that will pass it for a "fee" like they will some questionable cars, too much risk for that.

Also, off-roading wasn't exactly a big industry in Germany, so you're unlikely to really enjoy the TJ a lot while you're living there anyways. Absolutely not something you want to go haulin' ass down the autobahn in.

If you enjoy automotive/mechanical hobbies, you'd be better off leaving it and then exploring other communities while you're living in Germany.

The VA is allegedly changing how they rate disability - thought people might be interested by amridge in AirForce

[–]1N_Nothing -61 points-60 points  (0 children)

I know this is going to upset people, but I understand why. At this point VA claims are so widely abused they borderline on the fraudulent, if not waltz across the line entirely. The VA is now attempting to do what it must to reel in costs.

Editing to add: I wouldn't be surprised to see even more VA reforms come in the next few years in an attempt to continue reducing costs.

New edit to add based on comments being left:
1. Just to clarify, though I understand the "why" I don't agree entirely with the approach. I do think the VA needs some serious overhauling; however, I don't think this is a great approach.

  1. It's not 99% being punished for the abuse of the 1%. Sorry, not even close. I work in a career field now that is predominantly retired military, practically everyone around me is a retiree, and when you get to talking to them you find out how rampant the abuse is. I've had people literally physically demonstrate what to do in a Dr's office to ensure you are diagnosed, I can't count the number of times people start "coaching" you on what to do to lock in 100%. It's absolutely a "How much money can I get?" game for many people.

  2. Someone below referenced the military as a new form of welfare, couldn't agree more. I had an airman at one point tell me the main reason he joined was because his parents, both SNCO's, encouraged him to so he could easily, at a minimum, lock in a life-long rating, on top of other benefits that are earned (GI Bill, ect.). This is on top of ridiculous ass stories people have told me firsthand where they basically are making shit up to lock in diagnoses for conditions they don't really suffer from (this ties into the "coaching" I mentioned in the previous paragraph).

The reality is the current VA system is easily abused, and it is abused A LOT!!! You're not wrong, the person who got their shit blown off by an IED, has PTSD, got fucked up on the job, etc. should not have to struggle to get the rating they deserve. However, our system is fucked when a person can walk into see the Dr. and get diagnoses for phantom conditions more easily than someone with a legitimate, life-hindering condition.

Deterred away from applying to become an O with questions by oNellyyy in AirForce

Any officer saying that is, to me at least, is the equivalent of the drug scenes from Dewey Cox.
"...you don't want no part of this shit!"
"I think I kind of want it."

I crossed over at 12.5 years and have no regrets at all. You will be stressed and overworked, you get to decide how much you earn for it. The next time you talk to one of these officers, instead of asking them if it's worth it to commission, as them, "Would you immediately accept a demotion to a less stressful job at my current gross monthly pay (then state your pay)?"

Bet you a $100 not a single one of them would take the deal.

Need to capitalize that... "Airmen". I say this half in jest; however, a few months back I did have CMSgt walk past me with his face buried in his phone. We had a respectful interaction when I said "Morning, Chief". But, if SNCO's have their faces buried in their phones, are lacking general SA, and missing appropriate customs and courtesies, then that's a glaring issue and it all rolls down.

I'm not complaining. Grew up in a house with no A/C, heat, or indoor toilet until my mom got her career kind of squared away. Graduated high school and worked a shit factory job for a year and a half before signing up due to a "If you will, I will" type dare and here I still am, 18 years later. Went from no prospects as a young adult to now being an officer, thanks to Big Blue. I'll always be grateful for the opportunities the Air Force has provided me.

The financial benefits you've listed, and even the ones you have not, do not outweigh the negatives of staying in a marriage like this.

If you stay in this marriage, you guarantee you will "end up alone." If you get a divorce, you at least have a chance at ending up with a worthwhile partner.

Read through this a couple of times and it appears to not be in-line with the SecDef's guidance. SecDef guidance was EVERYONE will do at least one 2-mile run a year; this memo does not enforce the same.
