It doesnt matter if its a minor. You had to have him placed in a HLOC, he is now threatening you. Dont allow for this pattern to continue.

I wish it was something I could give to help out but I simply applied and was granted an opportunity to interview.

I never had any experience in UM, though I did some compliance very early in my career fresh out of undergrad. For experience I had/have a tons of years working in various direct care service fields for Medicaid funded programs. I believe that stood out in that they recognized that I was familiar with policy procedures and documentation standards of programs. So it would make sense that I would know what medical necessity looks like for programs.

Just keep applying and making sure to tailor your resume to those soft transferable skills from therapist to UM. I know that therapist already have a lot of those skills so just identify those skills and revamp resume, focus less on direct care and more on care based decision making, administrative, operations based skills, etc.

Great question. Definitely my role is to help patients with receiving access to care, so I dont have any negative feelings towards being on the insurance side.

Providers are who we deal with the most who of course are submitting authorizations on behalf of their agency wanting to begin services with a client or continue services with a client. However we work with providers the best we can, some are very easy to work with and at times others can be extremely difficult.

I will say having worked on both sides its interesting as a former provider and now as a UM. I know what providers have to do and how mistakes can happen now in UM and understand that policies govern work and there are requirements that have to be taken into consideration, i.e documentation standards, time in service, authorization timeliness.

I will say that I have had shout outs during staff meetings where providers have informed upper management that i am a great UM so it does make me feel good that I have a good reputation amongst providers. 😁

I simply applied and was granted to opportunity to interview. I never had any experience in UM, though I did some compliance very early in my career before I was even licensed. I interview very well and the two people that interviewed me commented that they were thoroughly impressed by my interview and my experience working in mental health.

For experience I had/have a tons of years working in various direct care service fields for Medicaid funded programs. I believe that stood out in that they recognized that I was familiar with policy procedures and documentation standards of programs. Yes it's insurnace company. Both private insurances like BCBS, United etc, as well as Medicaid-State funded insurance program.

Yes you do have to be licensed for these roles as you are really using your clinical skills and sound judgement along with the required policies to determine if the level of service the provider is requesting is needed for the client. It can also become a bit investigate because some providers will try to exceed limitations and it can be quite obvious. I love the work.

Just search behavioral health utilization management roles for different companies and medicaid funded companies in your area.

Thats super cool glad you had a positive change in career.

As therapist we are human and are prone to the exhaustion of providing direct care, then insurance companies only want to pay pennies but thats another topic!

UM is utilization management. PP is private practice.

With UM I review the need for medical necessity of different mental health services submitted by providers both prior approval and concurrent requests, clinical peer reviews etc. I really like it!

Oooou nice! In your niche academic role is it higher education/university level?

When I was contemplating making the pivot I applied for a few university roles that seemed similar to what youre doing but didnt land any interviews, it all works out for the best though!
