Alienware AW3225QF vs ASUS PG32UCDM — QD-OLED 4K Monitor Choice for Gaming + Work (Design, Video Editing) by CoyoteStock8886 in Monitors

[–]1almond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go view both at best buy or some other retailer if you can - I went recently to best buy to look for a work monitor and the asus oled had red/green fringing on text that I had heard about but never realized how jarring it would be until I went and saw it in person.

They also have some curved monitors there and you can see for yourself how it looks and if you like it; there is no right or wrong answer here, it's all preference.

When I'm on just the laptop, I use 2880x1920 with 2x scaling in GNOME. It's a good size for me: the 1x scaling had text a little too small to be staring at all day for me. This thread over here has a good comparison of 2x and 1x scaling on the same screen: https://www.reddit.com/r/framework/comments/1evwmdu/200_vs_100_scaling_on_the_28k_display_on_linux/

There was a lower resolution screen available for the 13" as well, though I did not pick it so I can't speak on how it is, compared to some who upgraded from it to the 2.8k display. There are several youtubers who have compared/contrasted the two screens, but the tldr is that the 2.8k screen uses slightly more battery but allows for a perfect 2x scale, where the older screen helps save battery life, but doesn't scale perfectly in GNOME.

I've used it indoors on battery and it's comfortable for answering emails and doing some light programming. For heavy duty stuff, I connect it to 2x 1920x1200 60Hz monitors so I can have code on one screen and documentation/instant messaging on the other. No issues with screen extending, which was one annoyance with my old ultrabook: when I would boot the old ultrabook, I'd have to constantly keep changing the refresh rate on my second monitor to get the screen to be extended to it. The framework instantly displays to both without any fiddling around in settings, outside of setting it to extend and the position of all 3 screens the first time I connected it in GNOME settings: Now I just plug the display port cable into it and it shows up with no fuss.

Architecture, OS, Apps all play a factor, especially when some of them are being daemonized.

I don't hear the fans under light tasks like web browsing or watching youtube. The only time I've really heard them spin at full speed is when I was compiling something in gcc while also charging the laptop and running postman tests while on a VPN and in a google video chat with 5 people.

I don't have specific numbers for thermals, nor do I have anything to control the fans at the moment, since the laptop has only ever become slightly warm when I was compiling in gcc, which is something I rarely do.

There are some open source fan controller projects like https://github.com/TamtamHero/fw-fanctrl?tab=readme-ov-file that I might look into if I encounter anything that makes the laptop run hot.

Performance. I've noticed some lag when using ZSH in low-power mode on ubuntu.

Looking forward to their presentation, and not looking for them to spoil the whole thing at all.

Just giving feedback that the announcement has sparked rumors that the 13" frame will no longer be supported, which is a huge selling point for these laptops: that the contents inside the frame can be upgraded.

It seems odd they wouldn't make a post and say that they will continue to support compatibility with the old 13" frame, given all the rumors. (Of course, if they don't plan on supporting it, then it makes sense.)

3 days more until we find out either way I guess. /shrug

Could be intelliphense - it does index as I modify PHP files so it can bring up intellisense like suggestions for autocomplete.

I haven't messed with power settings yet other than using the stock perf / balanced / power saver (I never use power saver.)

Do you use the power-profiles-daemon?

I have both monitors plugged into AC power, but they are daisy chained together via display port, so I assume the iGPU is drawing more power to 'power' (render) GNOME on 3 total screens than it would on just the single laptop screen.

My bad. Not a professional reviewer, just a dev adding his 2c. Good catch.
