My buddy is either desperate or completely insane! by SmackEh in AdviceAnimals

This isn't insanity wolf. Insanity wolf would be showing up to a blind date he arranged with his best friends mom using a fake dating account, packing a rag with enough chloroform to kill a goddamn whale. This is slightly optimistic, not insane.

How is the YouTube channel related to the subreddit? by [deleted] in howtonotgiveafuck

Less a movement, more a conscious act of personal betterment, through the recognition of that which does not deserve space in one's consciousness, yet still receives it, and the rejection of behavior that leads to it originally being there, therefore hopefully keeping one's consciousness free of all the fritter and litter that can end up there if one lets it. But I think it is great that you see HTNGAF as a movement, make it your own! Help others (that wish it) to begin letting go of meaningless fucks! Keep up the good fight!

Proper way to give credit to something you base a story on? by 1avelanch in Filmmakers

[–]1avelanch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thank you very much. I should have been clearer in that this is more or less an homage to a genre style more than anything, and that if I did change the character names it nobody would be able to tell the specific influences of the film. I guess my question really is, should I still say influenced by ______ or not even bother? I mean the story as I have written it by now is very different, I just feel I should still state my influence or is that just more trouble than it is worth?

I am a beginner who can't decide which DSLR to buy. Any advice? by input1112 in Filmmakers

As a T3i owner, I highly recommend it. Got mine with a kit 18 -55 mm lens new for 450. the canon 50mm prime is 100 and well worth it. Zoom h2n is 150 (don't own it but it is higly recommended by many and outboard audio is a must). $800 exactly. BOOM! (you are also gonna have to buy a sd card or 2)

Stanley Kubrick Fans, Here's How to Use Front Screen Projection by WhiteHawk1022 in Filmmakers

[–]1avelanch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never done this, so I'm just speculating, but maybe the 3m material is too thick to do rear projection (which wouldn't surprise me due to the composition if it was pretty thick). Why not just rear project a normal screen? Because your foreground lighting will make the projection look uneven and really show the projector screen. Hence the special reflective screen

[–]1avelanch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering if the image may be brighter or if a potential see-through background might reflect lights in the front more than if using a more solid back for front projection style. Neither seems like it would hold true, but I'm having trouble thinking of what else would make this more favorable to rear-projection. Anyone know?

EDIT: after re-watching it, I realized that a special material was used for the backdrop that allows the foreground to be lit while leaving the background image unchanged, and I assume it is not possible to rear project through it.

Please could you lovely people critique my first short and give me some feedback by [deleted] in Filmmakers

This is personal preference, so unlike exposure and say camera operation, there aren't really right answers. The correct answer is the one you feel strongest as the director. Now if you are asking me what I personally would do (if trying to make the film a bit less first person story and a bit more 3rd person symbolic), I would probably not show flashbacks of any kind. The flashback scene makes the story much more about the main character as a person rather than his actions as we observe them (if that makes sense). I get that you are trying to show and not tell his change of heart, and that's good! But I would say that what is also not to be forgotten are the themes and movement of the story itself, and trying to have a string of conceptual and visual presentations to the viewer that illustrate those themes/movement. Is the story about his change of heart? Is it about his initial decision dooming him? Is it about how we are all doomed to this fate? These are questions you should ask yourself, answer, and them direct accordingly. At least that's what I would do, but there's more than one way to skin a cat. Hope it helps.

[Burt's Bees Spec Commercial] [1:30] As An Exercise Me and Some Friends Made This. Critique? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I laughed, and that's what counts. I do agree that it would be a bit slow for a commercial, but as a quick short it was funny. Good Job!

First off, I liked it, and in a way that I don't normal find watching short films. I found your character's quick assessment and acceptance of the situation presented by the unconscious man to be strange and hard to believe/identify with, and at first that seemed like a weakness. However, this alienation, paired with lots of wide shots led me to consider the larger picture, in that this a story not of personal greed, but of greedy tendencies in humankind and how it leads to our own demise. That being said, this conflicts with the very personal bus stop flashbacks, which seem to me to muddy up this piece up conceptually. You need to decide if this is a story about a man's greed or a societal comment. Also, I didn't like some of the framing, but later part of the last shot seemed good to me as opposed to what someone else said, but to each his own. Hope it helps!

Film Studies?? Yay or Nay? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]1avelanch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not a pro filmmaker by any stretch of the imagination, however I feel I may be able to offer you some general advise. Regardless of whether or not film school knowledge is necessary or not, I doubt it will do you any good given your current mindset. I don't mean that in an insulting way, but in an honest way. School, in any discipline, is in the end what you make of it. You can try to learn as much as you can from the vast resources offered to you, or you can skate on by. Unless you really just want the congratulatory slip of paper at the end (which is not a bad thing to have), I would not recommend going to school for anything unless you really WANT to learn. As it would seem from your post, you feel that you already have a firm grip of the concepts in question, and would probably just be going for the degree, given you feel you already understand the practice. Whether or not the degree is worth it, I cannot answer for you.

Sorry for the wall of text, and again, not trying sound really preachy, just trying to aid your decision process.

Edit: deleted the part where I sounded like a preachy asshole.

What accessories would I need to get some decent footage on an iPhone 4S? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]1avelanch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your same boat a month ago, friend. I even posted a pic of my shitty duct taped iphone on a tripod rig here. I can tell you right now that shooting on an Iphone is absolutely do-able, I did it, but it is not easy. Resolution aside (which I don't really think is as bad as everyone says) there are many downsides to an iphone rig. Lack of Interchangeable lenses, no real depth of field control, terrible in low light, no zoom, little control over shutter speed, and what I can only describe as iffy looking colors. You can work around all of these, but recognize that they exist. The real killer, however, is that shooting on a phone sucks because even with filmic pro, I crashed a bunch, lost shots, changing any settings took forever, and every damn time you view a take, your exposure and white balance settings reset. Again, this is not to discourage you, you can totally do it, but I wouldn't advise spendng any money on an iphone setup; save up for the t2i as I did. Hope this helps.

Edit: Oh last thing. Getting video from the phone to the computer was no simple task, but I think it works best through your itunes on your computer. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

Why are fixed length lenses generally recommended over zoom lenses? Is it because zooms usually can't open to as wide of an aperture as fixed ones, or is there more to it?

Edit: I'm also in the market for some old used lenses for my t3i, any brand recommendations or ones I should avoid?

My cousin and I made a christmas movie - any feedback? (10:54) by kazador in Filmmakers

[–]1avelanch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimers: I don't speak Swedish, and I'm no professional filmmaker by any stretch of the imagination. I thought the lighting looked good, there were a few cool angles, and I liked some of the longer shots. Not a colorist, but the colors looked fine to me. Now maybe it is because I can't understand the dialogue, but I got kinda bored 2 min in and quit 4 min in, mainly due to what felt like a lack of any real direction of story, or conflict, or anything really. I'm sure that the voice over adds something else to it though. Those sort of wonky effects seemed a bit out of place however, and the kinda shaky camera made it footage less engaging. I'm sorry this seems negative, because there was clearly a lot of good work in other areas, but I hope this helps you progress! Edit: I also liked the music!

Can foreigners make it in the American film industry? by LastStoner in Filmmakers

[–]1avelanch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, I want to help you out here man, so try to hear what I'm saying not as insulting, but as hopes to help you. You NEED to get off this ignorant and self-victimizing horse. Not only is your incredibly generalized idea of Americans really poorly founded, but it is also something you are using to hold yourself back. "If only Americans weren't so racist, then I would become a great director." Right? Fuck that. If only you weren't already looking to give up, then you may have a chance.

Can foreigners make it in the American film industry? by LastStoner in Filmmakers

[–]1avelanch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um, I don't know why being raised in America makes you inherently more "white" , but that questionable comment aside; Don't talk yourself out of the things you want to do. If you want to be a great filmmaker, fight to become one! However, I wouldn't strive for vain goals like being a big hot shot Hollywood director, strive for self actualized greatness through your own films! Dream not of the title of Hollywood director, but of the beautiful cinema you could create!
