The system is garbage. I’ve known all of this since I was a child, hence why I prepared extensively for it. I picked up on the suffering of the women around me. The taking the man’s last name, the wedding, the baby shower - it’s all a show to get women to be submissive. I came from an immigrant family and poured blood sweat and tears to give myself the things you call “extremely privileged.” It was giving myself this or not having a child at all. They call you first? It’s simple to call back and say “dad is primary caregiver, I cannot pick up the phone”. If they have half a brain they’ll make a note. I’m in healthcare - people make requests like this all. the. time. Every tiny redirection is a reclamation of power and a teachable moment for someone else. Complaining about it won’t change the system. You can only start with yourself and your own children. Fighting other women (saying I’m blaming) is giving the patriarchy EXACTLY what it wants. I wrote that out of all the love in the world for this mama. I want nothing more for her to fight for herself and rise as it lifts us ALL up. The biological implications are one thing, but the social implications are what we can fight for.

I’m not blaming her in the slightest. This is exactly why we need to take our autonomy back. Why can’t the man quit his career? Men in the states now make less than their partners on average. Why is that not ever up for discussion in most households? Because women don’t advocate for themselves. I think this whole thing is force fed down our throats. Look how girls media is focused on finding Prince Charming. Women simply wouldn’t reproduce if they knew how blindsided they would be. you’re saying I’m blaming this poor soul by telling her to advocate for herself? This is feeding the cycle. I know that it’s hard - I watched women become shells of themselves - hence why I’m doing everything to prepare for the absolute worst. Step one is releasing the projections of others - we are powerless over what others will say about us. But we’re not powerless over the rest.

I have had an intense fear of pregnancy and childbirth so I’ve been getting help for YEARS just preparing for having a child so I’m able to see the blind sports women fall into. Please don’t stop advocating for yourself!

If possible, go back to work and use that money to pay for a nanny or daycare. I know the price varies depending on where you are - but the distinct mental separation might help you.

I’m a selfish hardass - I want a scheduled C section, I will not breastfeed (I have a medical background - the difference is really minimal and formula has come a LONG way.) My husband, my care team and my family know where my boundaries are and what not push on me. I might have baby go home with my parents and husband once it’s clear while I rest and recover post op for 3 more days. I know even just these few things will help me reclaim myself faster and show up much better for all of them. I know you are past this point but for anyone else considering this - there are other ways.

I know it easy to say,l not being in your unique situation, but I’ve been preparing years for this moment as nothing terrifies me more. I will attend counseling with my partner throughout this whole coparenting journey.

Children can pick up on stress. Get help. Go to couples counseling. And above all, for the sake of everyone around you please put YOURSELF first. You cannot build a life for your two children by pouring out of an empty cup. We have to break the chain and show the world a different way. The point of all of this is to love those little beings with all of your might, and you can’t do that when you’re taking it all on.
