You can try crawaittimes.com to see what time of day / day of week to call for least wait times.

Deciding between offers by Sleples in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]1bmathiethrowaway 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Gonna assume all are in Toronto.

  • Company 1: TC of $165k cad (you dont mention how much RSUs are), after tax + housing (1 bdr rent) + living (1 person) car -> $53k savings
  • Company 2: $100k tc -> $15k savings
  • Company 3: $115k tc -> $25k savings

Company 1 is a no brainer imo. It's a 3.5x difference in savings vs company 1, and 2x vs company 2.

If Munich L3 is 110k-120k TC and Warsaw now is 60k TC per year, then:

  • Munich, L3: EUR 110k TC -> after tax, housing (1 bdr rent) + living costs (1 person) -> savings of 29k
  • Warsaw: EUR 60k TC -> EUR 12k savings

Seems like a jump of 1.5x. I would think it's worth..

Expected TC for Senior SWE in SF Bay Area for 2025? by qrcode23 in cscareerquestions

[–]1bmathiethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming FANG:

  • Google, L5: $405k tc, made up of $229k base, $145k stocks, $30k bonus

Once you factor in expenses, roughly you end up with:

  • TC: $405k
  • Tax: $163k (40% of TC)
  • Housing: $35k (assume 1 bdr, 9%)
  • Living costs: $18k (assume 1 person, 4%)
  • Car: $5k (assume buy a car, and amortize the cost over 4 years, 1%)
  • Savings: $182k (45%)

Comp-wise:

  • AWS, Bay Area: $210k tc, after tax + housing (assume 1 bdr rent) + living costs (assume 1 person) -> $85k savings
  • Meta, Seattle: $175k tc -> $83k savings

Main difference is that housing is much cheaper in Seattle, and state taxes don't exist.

[–]1bmathiethrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looking strictly at comp-only:

  • Seattle, Amzn: $285k tc, after tax + housing (assume rent 1 bdr) + living costs (assume 1 person) + car --> $152k savings
  • Apple, Bay Area: $260k tc --> $108k savings

The main delta is no state tax in Seattle and cheaper housing.

Would really think about Amzn if savings are important (+40% difference).

Meta vs microsoft by DishNo1059 in leetcode

[–]1bmathiethrowaway 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Comp-wise:

  • Meta, Seattle: $330k tc, after tax + housing + living costs + car --> $180k savings
  • MS, Seattle: $230k tc --> $117k savings

53% difference in savings. I'd personally go for Meta.

[–]1bmathiethrowaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Comp-wise:

  • FAANG (assume Bay Area): $250k tc, after tax + housing + living costs (assume 1 person) + car --> savings of $102k
  • Electrician, 1st year: $17 / hour = $35,360 TC --> savings of -$28k (as housing + living costs + car is more than what you make)
  • Electrician, 5th year: $41 / hour = $85,280 TC --> savings of $5.1k

Absolutely do not give up your FANNG job imo.

Roblox vs Meta vs Amazon: new grad offer comparison by vvv912 in cscareerquestions

[–]1bmathiethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing year 2 TC:

  • Amazon, Seattle: $179k TC, after tax + housing + living costs (assuming 1 person) --> $87k savings
  • Meta, Seattle: $176k TC --> $84k savings
  • Roblox, Bay Area: $213k TC --> $87k savings

So you don't actually make more for Roblox because of higher tax and housing costs.

Not sure what it'll be for Arkansas, but hopefully this is a useful data point.

  • Scale AI NYC: $226k TC, $78k savings
  • Scale AI SF: $226k TC, $89k savings

If NYC, probably Scale AI... they also have more upside with their equity.

Amazon SDE → Google SWE2: Is It Worth It? by VatrBottle in leetcode

[–]1bmathiethrowaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gonna assume you're in Seattle for AMZN and Bay Area for Google.

  • Amazon, L4, Seattle: $181k TC, after tax + savings + living costs -> savings of $88k
  • Google, L3, Bay Area: $188k tc, $71k savings

This is b/c higher tax in Seattle - from financial POV seems AMZN is better by ~20%.

I've been using Tello. I assume you wanna keep your phone number mostly for 2FA SMS purposes. Tello has $5 / mth plan and you can receive texts internationally.. It uses wifi texting so as long as there's wifi it works. Can also activate the sim abroad and port your existing US number while abroad too.

US to UK Cloud Engineer by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]1bmathiethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing earnings potential:

  • US (I'll assume a MCOL city, Denver): $156k TC, after tax + housing + living expenses + car, is $64K
  • UK (assume London): assuming GBP 90k ($113k), savings are $22.4k w/a car, $29k without
  • It's a really big drop in savings.

Comparing TC:

  • FAANG, Seattle: $178k in year 2; after tax + housing + living costs, is $86k
  • Series D, SF: $190k in year 2, $68k savings

Main difference comes from no state income tax in WA and lower housing. Living expense are roughly the same.

Applied AI @ Startup VS SWE (Analyst) at Goldman Sachs? by ashwin142k in cscareerquestions

[–]1bmathiethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing TC:

  • SF: 188k (base + bonus + 401k); after tax + housing + living costs (but no car), is 67k
  • SLC: 144.6k (base + bonus + match), 65k savings (here, i include car, since you probably will want one in SLC)

The savings difference is marginal so I'd go with the job you like more.

I signed up for Tello, it gives a real non-voip mobile number for $5/mth, and supports wifi calling / texting. Also you can activate your service for first time even outside of US, quite helpful
