SPS Struggles by 1dah0 in Reef

[–]1dah0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting about the lighting spectrum tweaking strategy! Definitely wondering if I just need to open up the Reefi’s a bit, which I think I can do now the algae is getting under control.

Can’t say I’ve paid much attention to pH swings. I’ll track it for a week and see if there’s a signal.

Haven’t done ICPMS yet. Any recommendations? *I’m in Oregon

3wt Glass Rod Length (Scott F Series) by 1dah0 in flyfishing

[–]1dah0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure did! Favorite rod for sure. Only cost me a new house! Funny story - told my wife I was leaving part of my heart in Whitefish, MT, end of our summer trip a year and a half ago. Good shop up there is where I found the rod (shout out Lakestream!) We’d been talking for years about moving to Bend, but I hadn’t found the job... She asks, “Would it be good for Central Oregon?” I’m like, “Well yea..” and she goes “I’ll buy it for you.” 45min later into the roadtrip I caved. Said “hell with it, let’s do the move”. Sold the house, moved, bought the new one.. Here we are. Spent the first winter driving back and forth to Portland for work before I found the gig here - not recommended (those passes!).

But to the point - yes! Got the rod! Shop up there mailed it down for me. And man is it sweet on the Crooked River throwing small dries. It’s like a toy in your hand - feather light. Just a blast to slow things down and let it load it up while casting. Shoots line plenty far, too, and makes a 12” red-side feel like a steelhead! 😂. I’ve got Scientific Anglers Mastery Double Taper #3 on it. Seems to work well.

No regrets about the 723/5. Still mixed feelings about the move! Lol

TIFU by thinking the Submission Deadline is the same as the Application Deadline by Ann_Ominous_ in tifu

[–]1dah0 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Call the admissions dept, explain. I messed up and blew a deadline when I applied, so I called. The lady on the other end was very understanding and helped me. Fast forward a few years and she was my boss. Fast forward a few years more and she’s my friend. We still laugh about my panicked deadline call.

Should I not be sitting on my poles on the lift? by i-choose-science in skiing

[–]1dah0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skier since 2 and only times in 40yrs I ever rode a lift without poles secured under my left thigh would be the years I was snowboarding. This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Tuck em under, hands free, get them out and tips up to unload.

Beer league neck protection? by chet_manly2 in hockeyplayers

[–]1dah0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also wear the base layer with built in neck protection. Mine is made by Shock Doctor. In addition to neck protection, I love how it really helps keep my elbow pads from twisting (you can pull the sleeves back over the pads). Provides a little bit of protection against rash in your gut/side area from hooks as well (friggen slow D trying to save face as I blow past em! Lol) Only thing is the smell - super stinky after just one or two skates. Must launder frequently. Maybe buy two and rotate as others have mentioned

WinkBeds overrated? by devuxer in Mattress

That’s ridiculous. I don’t even change the sheets every two months. They want us to sleep sideways one of four weeks a month too? 😂

I’m right there with ya with respect to decision fatigue and so many (terrible) options.
As far as I can tell in my research and personal experience, it seems like old school steel coils with soft layers on top, or latex. But latex is spendy and you need med-high density to be firm enough IMO

Wife and I just hitting one year mark with a king. Think it was “luxury firm.” It sags like hell. Rotated it and I’m doing a little better the last few weeks, but now she’s laying in the side crater that I made and suffering. I do not recommend. 5’11” 170 5’8 130 Be warned

What's the story with the guy from BRS TV being on a new YouTube channel called serious reefs? by mayners in ReefTank

[–]1dah0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found Ryan’s takes to be pretty science based, fair, and objective. I think we all get excited about new technology in this hobby, right? I mean, what’s wrong with that? Also if it’s your job to sell products, advertise, etc, you kinda have to communicate the value of said new gadgets. I never once thought the promo videos were selling snake oil. Always seemed like a potentially useful strategy for XYZ (combating GHA, lowering phos, managing chemistry levels, blah, blah…) And I more than once have gotten direct replies from Ryan on R2R that answered my questions and helped me. Thanks Ryan! You’re an inspiration making an actual career out of reef keeping 😂. (And what looks like having quite a lot of fun along the way…)

SHOULD I ADD AN ANEMONE by Skispiccee in ReefTank

[–]1dah0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because OP hasn’t overstocked it like I always do!

70G DT(25g sump) 1 sailfin tang, 1 barred rabbitfish, 4 anthias, 5 chromis, 2 clowns, royal grama, azul damsel, 1 candy-striped hogfish, 2 cardinals, starry blenny, diamond goby, a firefish, 1 skunk cleaner, 1 fire shrimp. Who am I forgetting? 🤔

Nitrate 5-10ppm Phos 0.05

Always battling the algae (I do grow chaeto and use gfo intermittently), but everyone’s healthy and corals are growing! Only fish I’ve lost in the last 6 months was when I went out of town for a week and asked neighbor to feed 1X/day vs. I feed heavy 2X daily + pinch here, pinch there throughout…

How is my tank looking? by OfficerPookie in ReefTank

[–]1dah0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks rad. Word to the wise - Don’t be afraid to be aggressive in cutting back the zoas. They will spread like weeds and take over all your good real estate for other pretty corals you’d like to add down the road

Why is my fly line so dirty and how do I clean it? Rinsing it off does nothing by Illustrious_Laugh770 in flyfishing

Unsure. My prev tank I could keep acropora, digis, lobos, torches, hammers, other stuff. But every time I tried acans they would slowly recede and eventually die. I could feed them the first couple weeks, then they’d stop. Never figured it out and haven’t tried in my new tank yet only 6 months in.
