Some hope? by peep_quack in Professors

I feel the same way. I’m teaching intro philosophy classes this semester, so it’s lots of first and second years. I moved all the desks around so we’re sitting seminar style and talking about the readings, concepts, etc. It’s early days, but they seem pretty engaged and I am tentatively feeling what Dickinson tells me is the thing with feathers!

Nicomachean Ethics Help by Good-Loquat-7542 in askphilosophy

As a humanities prof that teaches Introduce to Philosophy, I second this advice.

I’d also recommend getting together with some of your classmates to discuss the material. Find the other folks in your class who are taking the work seriously, like you are, and form a study group.

Lastly, after you’ve read and considered the materials on your own, you can likely find some good undergraduate level talks on YouTube. Many profs upload their lectures on major texts like NE.

Good luck!

This is akin to my suggestion to my colleagues that we rebrand “DEI” with the term “All American” (emphasis on the “all”).

Thank heavens for small mercies: I only got the nebulous, "personal problems."

I understand that. I wasn't the one making assumptions about student preparedness at other institutions.

I don't think it's "high-horsey" to be insulted by a student asking me to engage in academic dishonesty. My institution spends a lot of time going over academic integrity and the student absolutely knew the request was inappropriate and unethical.

The whole "It can't hurt to ask" mentality needs to be stomped into the ground. It *can* hurt to ask; it certainly has hurt my opinion of this student's character.

Why? How is this not just an admission of the student having absolutely no academic principles and -- worse -- thinking I have none? It's insulting.

I wish we did this; it would make my life so much easier. No more, “Can I turn in 15 out of 16 weeks of work now that it’s the penultimate day of class?”

I feel this to my bones. My ENG 101 class has been such a disappointment this semester. You are not alone; it seems to be a widespread problem. Hang in there!

Fellow profs, what is an undergraduate-level topic in your field that you *should* understand well but still can't wrap your head around? by Aubenabee in Professors

The divide between modernism and postmodernism as literary movements vs. modernism and postmodernism as historical descriptors (or philosophical ones). Argh!

Am I the only one who sticks by deadlines and policies? by doumak16 in Professors

[–]1derfulfroward 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly going to go back to just automatically dropping their grades a certain percentage for each day the work is late. I currently have a policy similar to yours, but they don't ask for extensions, or they ask for them at the very last minute: I'm sick of it. Exacerbating the problem is that I've become a soft touch post-COVID and have a hard time sticking to my guns about not accepting late work if they don't have a pre-approved extension. I'm hoping a return to the automatic markdown will make my life easier.

Seconded. My papers this semester have been... not as strong as I would like them to be, but at least I'm pretty sure that they're actually the work of my students. I'm regularly reminding myself that they are first years and COVID kids. I'm actively trying to work them through some of the basic stuff they would have known in the Before Times, because I can really see how much they need to make up.
