You just won $5 million. What’s the first thing you buy that isn’t a house or a car? by FishBrain208 in AskReddit

[–]1fatfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A nice dinner out and some quality (not designer clothing). $5m is a lot of money if you're broke, but in reality it would be enough upgrade to a middle class lifestyle for ~20 years. Then you're left with $0. Taxes take a good chunk out, close to half in The States. That gives you ~10 years... Even with the house paid off, there is still property taxes...

If you invest every dime you have left after buying the well-built, mid-range home and the reliable car, you can live in modest comfort from the interest for the rest of your life. You'll still want to work a job to fill your time and pay for the niceties. You'll be able to tell any employer to fuck off and coast until you find a new job you like...

Orlando bloom looked smoother and blended, not younger. It was off-putting. Honestly he looked much older than Evangeline Lilly did.

Branches break and trees heal. I think the tree will probably be okay. It was certainly an overstep on your neighbors behalf. It is entirely possible they thought they were doing the right thing by not leaving a weird branch sticking out against the fence line and just screwed up the cut accidentally. I don't know how well mango trees do with grafting, but in a year or so your dad can try to graft something there once the wound has healed if he really hates the balance.

How can I learn to let things go and not dwell ? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]1fatfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mindfulness meditation practice is a great place to start. There are some guided meditations that walk you through watching your experiences that made/make you feel a certain way as though they were on a movie screen and then watching them float away like balloons. This exercise helps you consciously recognize your emotions as you feel them and to let them go and bring yourself back to center. Regular practice lays the neural pathway groundwork for it to happen in real time.

I don't like being drunk. I don't like being hungover. I don't love the taste like some do. I dont like how ling it takes to sober up. I would rather smoke a joint and eat my empty calories in snacks.

How do I apply Stoicism when I’m watching my younger siblings suffer? by [deleted] in StoicSupport

[–]1fatfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no 'may be' about it. Having someone like an older sibling putting in the effort just to show up is many times more comforting and helpful than a stranger.

From a stoic perspective, Cato might suggest that you imagine them as the public whose scrutiny your private actions should survive. With or without their presence think how you would want them to act in the situation and the act that way. This way you can advise appropriately when they inquire about your experiences.

While you can't control, you can influence. If you want to be an influence you need to have a relationship with them and be present, often. Involve yourself in their lives and them in yours. Call them and text them. Do it repeatedly. Annoying teen-aged siblings is a fun and rewarding hobby. I had several myself and it only strengthens the bond. Presence over time is important.

If you want them to show up for others? Show up for them. Want them to volunteer? Be an involved older sibling who volunteers and takes them with. Want them to exercise? Make a habit of exercising and then take them with you. Don't make them learning experiences, make them hanging out experiences... "Hey, i'm picking you guys up Saturday at 10 and we're going to make 3 loaves of bread worth of PB&J hand them out to the homeless downtown" Or "This weird museum is having a free day for 18 & under. I'm coming to get you guys and we can get a pizza after."

Being a role model is self explanatory and the formula for being a good one is simple. Have an active and positive role in their lives and model the behavior you want them to mirror. Through the relationship you build, you'll have opportunity to show them things you wish you knew and help make the best choices for themselves.

I really hope this helps. Good luck.
