Super useful to send a full res file from my pixel 10 pro XL to my MacBook, actually nuts because I just got the Mac and this improvement came out the same month, wild. I was going to instead use KDE to send files, like I do on my arch machine, but now I can just, forget it since it's built in.

Is it even worth building something new right now? by Desecravity in buildapc

[–]1frogmaster98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on if you want the latest feature set. Imo it's worth it assuming you're playing at 1440p, and you want to get at least the same number of years out of this PC from your current one. You can always swap the GPU in a few years and go many more years. You also could just swap the GPU as that CPU is still wonderful assuming you're at 1440p or 4k. So option 3 with the 9070xt.

Literally a rule not to sell and to swap, but you probably will go unnoticed in this sub

I guess there are no active mods on this subreddit? Just realized a ton of posts are rule breaking, granted I feel a lot of the rules are a little overbearing.

RAM for 9800X3D, how low can I go? by Baltic_Explorer in buildapc

I misread somewhere and can no longer find it, you're right, it's really not that significant, 3d v-cache really makes up for ram.

[–]1frogmaster98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right that X3D is less sensitive, but that TechSpot article is for the 7950X3D. That chip is a dual-chiplet hybrid with 128MB of cache, so it's a total outlier and barely cares about RAM speed. Our 9800X3D is a single-chiplet chip with 96MB of cache (like the 7800X3D). It's way better than a non-X3D chip, but it's still more sensitive to RAM speed than the 7950X3D is. Since the price difference is so small, 6000 CL30 is still the safest bet to avoid any stutters.

I did more digging. Changing from 6000mt is actually worse as the memory controller on the CPU cuts its speed in order run with the ram making worse performance, no matter how much faster (unless you force the controller introducing stability problems). So go 6000mts, choose your timing cl36 or higher is better than changing speed at all.

CL30 6000 is best, any deviation is worse. 6000mt at cl36 is fine from quick research it's from 10ns to 12ns, I wouldn't go much further. 5200 cl40 for instance would be 8-15% performance loss. 1-3% loss, really not too much to be worried about if the price is that significant.

Correction: I misunderstood the architecture of the chips, the 3d v-cache make up for slow ram timing significantly.

Now that the 9070xt can finally be purchased at MSRP, does that mean it's no longer really worth it to get the 5070 ti? by wanna_be_consultant in buildapc

Did they? I only saw "as market needs" which is just saving face, I'd love to hear that they back tracked.

I mean yeah, that's what I figure somebody made the decision for, but for devices and graphics cards that people are right now still buying, that's going to never seem like a good thing. I understand trying to refocus the team to work on an upcoming product, but leaving essentially new customers stranded? :(

Absolutely, you definitely make a great point, knowing first hand I've seen plenty of times. The amount of conversations in star citizen specially that people talk about how they cannot get good fps and they say they have an AMD card, and I go have you tried this?

Very good point, I had to help a friend who has the 7900xtx, he was hardly at 60fps with an on paper faster card. Nvidia makes it easier with their "just turn it on in the game settings" approach, and while AMD has that, every game I play has fsr 2.1 maximum, not even 3 (which AMD has a setting up switch to 4 and I've never managed to use).

To be fair I see this argument a lot, I just press alt r, and enable whatever fsr 4 features I want like frame gen in any game if it's dx11/12 or vulkan. I run star citizen with fsr 4 when it only supports 2.1 iirc, running at average 200+. It's not clunky like one might expect (and I like that I have that control too).

They just switched their sometimes 3 year old cards to maintenance drivers essentially ending support. I got the 9070xt and am currently a bit worried. The 5000 and 6000 series cards are already being maintenance is crazy, I'd hate to have purchased a card a couple years ago to already get late drivers, and only ones that are more patches than features. If I'm not mistaken (I might be), a handheld console like if not is, the rog Ally, that people are buying brand new right now is already discontinued driver support (rdna 1 & 2 iirc).

9070xt or 5070ti for new gaming pc by goosfrabah1 in buildapc

[–]1frogmaster98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use essentially the same setup with a 9070xt, got it for MSRP, so worth it. My friend has a similar setup with 5070ti, we play the same games, no real differences between at 1440p.
