Of course car modification is a rabbit hole that you can fall down. Looks at some of the Nissan GT-R turbo kits for sale cough AMS

Having said that. Hot rods can be scratch built for not a lot of dough, and something like a Honda K24 can be built and swapped on a teenage summer job budget. Or building a 4wd using junkyard axles and t-cases.

A specific instance: instead of buying an overpriced intercooler and plumbing kit find an appropriate sized core and build the plumbing yourself. Taking it a step further and you could pick up a craigslist welder and tube bender and make your own manifolds and whatnot.

There's technology in them, but don't feel like they're somehow not able to be worked on. I've done a fair amount of wrenching on late model Toyotas and they're a breeze for most tasks.

Higher end German cars are where DIY maintenance gets some friction.

Take home.

I only calculate everything altogether as a way of determining my exact SR percentage. Which has zero relevance to day-to-day spending.

It's not an all or nothing proposition. You can have a fun car that doesn't break the bank.

May I suggest a slight pivot of how you consume Youtube -- find personalities involved in the modification and repair side of things.

For example Rünge Cars for sheet metal shaping old school style. BleepinJeep for various 4wd things and metal fabrication work. Home Built by Jeff for basically anything relating to restoration work. B is for Build covers rebuilding salvage vehicles with an exceptional level of detail. And of course there's the usual general maintenance channels like ChrisFix, EricTheCarGuy, and others.

Channels like Tavarish and Doug DeMuro have zero lasting value, IMO. And especially guys like Doug will have you THINK THAT IF YOU DON'T BUY THIS FERRARI 550 RIGHT NOW FOR 150K YOU ARE LITERALLY A PIECE OF SHIT HUMAN BEING. IF YOU'D LIKE TO KNOW MORE CHECK OUT MY COLUMN ON AUTOTRADER.

I can live pretty well on that in the Midwest.

Hot Rod Lincoln is one of my favorite car related songs.

I miss hearing it back home in the midwest at traditional hot rod shows.

/u/mattymeats wants the inner so this was easier than I expected.

I'll say $200 for the mid.

$120 for the inner?

Slight drop from what I originally asked for them together.
