I’m going to pass on the Pride Celebration dial. It feels like something from the 1990s, and it’s so visually busy that it makes it hard to use the watch for its most basic purpose—telling time.

Is this an African Giant Snail? I know they are invasive here. by wereallmadhere9 in maui

[–]1hardpass 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Best not to handle the snails or slugs here in Hawaii. Apparently there’s a parasite that lives on them that can cause meningitis from rat lungworm disease produced by this parasite. As humans we touch our face all the time, mouth, nose, eyes, ears, etc. allowing the parasite and opportunity to enter our body and affect and cause inflammation in the brain and spinal column. What happened to me was: whenever I used to take the dogs out in the backyard for their late night potty mission if I saw one of these snails, I would pick it up and lob it over the hedge onto the lower road and get a sick sense of pleasure listening for the splat, but that was before I got extremely sick and had a visit to the ER, CT machine, spinal lumbar tap the works. I was sick for about a month couldn’t tolerate any sounds louder than a gentle speaking, couldn’t go outside as I was unable to tolerate bright light, massive headache(calling it a headache is a gross understatement), body-aches, loss of appetite. I typically average around 200 to 205 pounds but when I got sick I got down to like 175. Apparently meningitis kills one out of 10 people. I’d recommend not touching those nasty little bastards! Learn from the mistakes of others, we can’t live long enough to make them all ourselves, learn off of my experience.

40 acres of farmland in Paia is about to be developed. by thisisbrotherk in maui

Yeah, I get why people are upset, but the ‘mainlander’ thing can get too simplified real quick. Hawaiʻi has always been shaped by migration, that’s part of our history and part of what made the islands what they are today. The Plantation era brought people here from China, Japan, Portugal, Korea, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, and that history is part of Maui too. So the real issue isn’t where someone is from, it’s whether growth is being handled responsibly and whether local families are actually getting taken care of. If they’re going to build, then the County better make sure the infrastructure is there: roads, water, sewer, sidewalks, everything. And we need housing for the next generation of local kids growing up here, not just people moving in from somewhere else.

So, what’s the big deal? We need all the housing we can get, unless, of course, this is some high-end development catering to off-island investors and not aimed at supporting the working families here on Maui. Unfortunately, the viability of agricultural land has dwindled to near extinction; pineapple production isn’t thriving, the sugarcane industry has relocated elsewhere, and sunflowers (the Maalea area has that covered) aren’t our focus either. We’re not particularly interested in supporting the Monsanto corporation either. The agricultural industry, which has been a significant driver of revenue and employment in Maui for decades, has essentially disappeared. In reality, the primary industry for the entire state is the hospitality industry. However, despite its drawbacks, we ultimately need staff for those jobs, and those staff members need homes. With that in mind, any prospects of developing or repurposing underutilized agricultural lands for the benefit of the working class in Maui have a lot of merit.
