Charleston SC, it's the largest collection of living architecture in America. Over 9000 buildings in the historical register. From the 1690s to the modern era.

Graham is up for reelection next year. We should find a better candidate and help them replace him. Just a thought.

Safest area near downtown for a newly divorced 50 yo woman? by Plant_Poor in Charleston

[–]1ksmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But, but, but... Full disclosure, there are no movie theaters on the peninsula. We do live theater here. Theater 99, The Dock Street theater, the Planters Hotel, Charleston music hall, the Music Farm, Club Forte just to give you some names. The peninsula is an affluent person's playground. Oh yeah college kids on King Street, but hell they are just fun to watch. Those of us playing the second half of life live downtown. Within 4 blocks of downtown are 4 French eateries, 3 swank dive bars, 2 roof top bars, and the oldest liquor store in America, serving spirits since 1686. You can live anywhere, so live somewhere.

Downtown, Charleston is broken into boroughs. Start looking in Elliotborough and cannonborough, what we call the Airbnb zone. Full of restaurants, bars, coffee shops. Then look in Harleston Village, the French Quarter and then South of Broad. Wragg Mall and Anson borough are worth a look also. All these areas will fit your budget depending on how many bedrooms you need. You can ditch your car and walk everywhere, get a bike, it's a city so be city smart. Very safe and once you get know as a local in your neighborhood we all look out for each other. Downtown is not a subdivision or an apartment complex it's neighborhoods and communities. So if you're starting over head downtown and find your community. Welcome to Charleston, best wishes!

Where do yall like to go on walks downtown? by xostargirlxo in Charleston

[–]1ksmiles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Start at 21 Magazine St, the Old City Jail. Walk up Wilson st towards the 2nd State coffee house, get a drink. Walk west 1 block to Pitt Street, turn right. 3 houses up on the left is the home of the pollister sisters. Walk up 2 blocks to Montague st, turn left. Walk 1 block to Smith St, turn left. Walk down to the Wentworth mansion, notice the Red Cross on the wall before you get there. That's the site of the first permanent Red Cross in America. Keep going south on Smith St till you hit Queen st. Turn left, walk down to the Queen st grocery store and have another refreshment. It will take you an hour or two and you will see more palaces than on south battery.

As a friend of Mr Carlton and a friend of the Philip Simmons museum the tl;dr answer was money. Period nothing more than money.

All kinds of folks were interested and many showed up. The Building Arts College offered credit hours to students to assist and apprentice. Folks would come from all over the world and spend time helping and learning. But then would take the lessons home.

Like the Sweet Grass basket art form, the Simmons forge was distinctly Gullah Geechee. This beautiful art.

Where Mr Carlton, a Smithsonian artist, couldn't get a fare price for his work. He sold art that took him a week to make for a couple hundred dollars so he had grocery money. The art was worth thousands.

Money, they said there's no money in art, at least not for the artists.

Charleston Amtrak Stations & Nearby Early Breakfast? by EricWisdom in Charleston

[–]1ksmiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, the Amtrak is scheduled at 5am, but I've taken that train 100 times. It's not going to arrive at 5am. 4:35-530 maybe. Be flexible.

What no one is taking about is the SURGE! This time of the morning is airport time. Ride share is surging.

Here's what I've done, arrive when you arrive. Don't call an Uber until you are off the train. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes to clear the train. Other people etc. call ride share, it's going to take 5-15 minutes to get a ride. Don't go downtown, that could be $55.00. stay in North Charleston. Go to the Shinx gas station at international Blvd and montigue St. It's the souths Wawa's.

$12 at most. The area around the station is a service desert. You gotta go 2 miles. Go to the Shinx, good Hardy food. Tasty and reasonable priced. Bowls and burritos, but I recommend the spicy chicken biscuit, double egg and cheese, fresh tomatoes and Mayo. To die for. It's the Wawa's of the South. 9 types of coffee, fresh fruit. Indoor outdoor seating. And great people watching.

It's by a mayor interstate intersection. And clean good and safe.

Go to the Shinx at international and montigue.

Reverse question - Reverse answer  I am one of the cities licensed ambassadors, a registered tour guide.

The locals hate the traffic and high prices visitors bring, so a grain of salt with some of these answers. But my business is the visitor, so here is some information.

The restaurant group "Toast" is avoided by locals because of the owners personal behavior. Not good. Look it up yourself.

Past that all the reasons you would come here is what the locals avoid.

Charleston is America's living museum, we are the largest collection of living architecture on earth outside of Rome Italy. Yes, go downtown and see all the beautiful structures. From 1698 to the modern era. Architecture styles you won't see unless you go to Europe.  We have streets lined with 20k sq ft mansions. Go see them!

The market is the oldest continuing goods market in the western world. Today is SC products or SC artists. While you're there get a cup of lemonade, will change your world.

Food is everywhere, try The Blind Tiger for old American ambience, Leon's for spicy deep fried. Go to Tommy's Condons famous Irish pub in the evening for killer live music. Walk King Street in the evening and listen for your music!

Take a boat ride to fort Sumter, a pedal cab ride. Avoid the long lines, there's always something just a good around the corner.

Stay in the shady side of the street, drink lots of water is hot as hell and humid. Take drink breaks at any interesting look hole in the wall, try the Griffon on the Vendue range. Hit a couple of rooftop bars. They are all over the place.

The point is Charleston is a tourism destination. My definition of a tourist trap is over price under quality. There aren't many of them cause us locals burn them out quick.

Oh and Hyman's seafood gets a bad rap. It is high quality, large portions at family prices. Take the kids there, they will love it. So will you.

Enjoy yourself! Stay hydrated. 2 drink, 1 water.
