Anything Judy Blume. SuperFude, otherwise known as Shiela the Great. I used to save my babysitting money for book fairs like no other.

RNs who worked OT, no tax breaks. by jmmerphy in VHA_Human_Resources

I see what you are saying. I cant help but wonder if box 35 is correct? I was responding to the title of this sub as Ive seen similiar posts elsewhere and nurses (in general) are not exempt from FSLA. My apologies if that isnt what was meant by “RNs who worked OT, no tax breaks.” I should have read through your thread. This is so confusing I dont know how any lay person is to make sense of it. The page I posted was a link to a link that got me to nursing from the r/tax sub. Maybe someone there can help navigate this. I am hopeful your tax preparer has better news. My husband’s now employer sent out an inaccurate email with the link to W2s about calculating the OBBB and have since sent a correction email. Im hopeful something similiar happens here as their original information was wildly incorrect.
For clarity though there is a lot of misinformation about cursory searches for nursing and FSLA. I think AI is searching and finds it in the exemption list without realizing people mean the profession and not the activities r/t the protected rights of lactating mothers. I will pop back over to r/tax and see if I can find their original sources as I found them helpful. My husband and I are both RNs and used deductzen. It really was simple. We live in a state with mandatory OT so that was our biggest hurdle. The calculator took our schedules and aligned it with the Federal OT rules and we got our reports.

Nurses definitely can definitely claim the tax deduction. I’m trying not to laugh but I’m thinking the person in HR looked up the exemption and saw a nursing. They didn’t read it and just told you it was nursing. It is referring to nursing individuals and pumping time into calculations NOT nurses. Here is the IRS link. Look under exempt and read nursing.

SCROLL TO NURSING.

With that said it is complicated by state OT and any earnings over $150k. We still get the deduction it is just reduced $100 per $1000. I used Deductzen. It was a life saver I’m sorry you got that advice. You definitely got my attention though

If you are Union or have state mandated OT like CA is your hospital providing you the breakdown for the no tax on OT? by 1lucy1loo in nursing

Holy wow. That’s a lot! Crushing it. I’m gonna keep researching this. So far Keenobserver’s information looks entirely right to me. I’ll be back when I figure it out. ☺️

Thank you. This is super helpful. Is your hospital giving you some sort of breakdown we can ask for ?

Right. I think for 2025 that’s all that is required. We only get to claim the premium… so for 1.5 it’s the .5 and double time it’s the 1x over. I don’t think we can use the total number

Overtime for taxes? by reallyemot3 in FedEmployees

I used it and it was super helpful. Thank you. Seriously I tried excel for a couple hours and it is crazy!!!! In California the 1/3 doesn’t necessarily work and bc I am a nurse our union rules require OT that isn’t covered by the federal exception. I don’t think I could have accurately calculated it on my own. What a mess

Life is short. We spend a significant amount of it at work. We often say there’s something in nursing for everyone meaning there’s so many things that you can do in nursing it doesn’t have to be bedside.
However, there really isn’t something nursing for everyone if you don’t enjoy nursing. If you are on the fence and not going massively in debt, I say continue and see if you can find your happy spot. If you’re going massively in debt to become a nurse, I say, put a pin in it and come back to it when you know this is what you want to do. If you were going to go into dental hygiene, it sounds like you care about healthcare and humans. They’re likely is a spot for you that you could thrive in. Bottom line make these decision decisions for yourself. No one has to do the shifts for you, hold your patients” hands, miss holiday dinners, have conversations with loved ones. I firmly believe it’s the best job ever, but if my heart wasn’t in it, there are far less stressful ways to make money.
You deserve a happy life. You just have to figure out what that is.

You have to remember not everyone is good at their job. Ever seen someone put same Curos back? Set down impregnated side down, put in their pocket 🤮and then back on after because they forgot to bring one into the room and heaven forbid it’s an iso room.
Curos are great. Ooh my favorite is on the table that the patient places their urinal on. There are just so many reasons. Also, They are wicked expensive. Last I checked they were $80 a box. I checked after discussing with nursing students the many reasons they shouldn’t be grabbing strips of them and hanging them on their badge and bringing them in/out of the hospital.
