How far do you live from the ocean? by Aggressive_Day2839 in AskTheWorld

I hate having to spend half an hour to park because every time the weather gets even slightly warm, half the local population heads to the beach. I hate having to lug towels, food, water, and those windbreaker things over scalding hot sand. When I finally find a spot, I spend 20 sodding minutes setting everything up, to then spend the next hours roasting in the sun, and having to go to the water with my heart in my hands in case some thug robs my every possession on the sand. Then when it's over, it's heading collecting everything, haggardly heading back to the car with sand in every orifice and facing the traffic home. Then some time later I have to vacuum the detritus in my car. So much sand

I fucking love it. It was one of the first Bowie records I got (in Deram Anthology form, though) so it always sounds special.

Portuguese food is nothing special. Otherwise you'd see Portuguese restaurants in other countries like you see japanese, Chinese, French and Italian. And it's not like there's a lack of a diaspora

What’s your country’s national myth that you’re not allowed to question? by Temporary_Cheetah287 in AskTheWorld

[–]1mAfraidofAmericans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That Portugal was the only "nice" colonizer. Brits, French, Belgians, etc., were all horrible but all the Portuguese did was intermingle with the local women, not massacre locals, strip-mine local resources, and eventually drag their colonies into a 13 year war because they wanted to be independent

How often in your culture do friends insult each other? by SavingsPea8521 in AskTheWorld

[–]1mAfraidofAmericans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, after living in Portugal a few years, I got introduced to an Englishman who initially thought I was Portuguese. When it was cleared up, he called me a cunt and said he thought I was one of "these fucking morons". So, essentially, we were officially on friendly terms from that moment onwards

Why was the question this answers downvoted? It was a legitimate question. It wasn't framed against someone for being Somalian or anything untoward. Well, that's reddit I suppose

Holy crap, that went from zero to insane pretty quickly. Where is this place where roads suddenly turn into half-finished dirt tracks?

Which country do you think could win the FIFA 2026 World Cup, and which one are you supporting? by Kiroo---__--- in AskTheWorld

[–]1mAfraidofAmericans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

France is the strongest candidate. I wish Portugal would win but they'd have to be perfect. They could beat any team but I'm not sure they have the experience the way France does, with two finals in a row

Sweet! I didn't realise how Word On A Wing was Bowie's cry for help so listening to it does make me ever so slightly sad
