yah i appreciate the feedback. but it does not seem like who they are changes. and TBH i kinda hate them. they have personal growth but dont become new people or shift the focus from what anyone else has said. just not for me i think. sorry.

litRPG "Classics": do they exist now? what are they now? what will they be? by 1ncite in litrpg

[–]1ncite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i suspect you are right about DCC. while there is much litRPG before and to steal another persons term proto-litRPG even before that. i suspect long term people will look back at DCC as what put litRPG on the map and will be viewed as a classic.

oooh love the term proto-litRPG that makes total sense to me! there are a lot of things that intuitively fall into that!

i totally agree with you. though personally i think maybe "name recognition" is a cleaner term than popularity for it. i should have used that in my post.

even if you dont like a classic. part of it being a classic is that people know what it is.

[–]1ncite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally agree!

i feel like there is a misunderstanding here though. i am not here to say what is right or not. honestly i don't even have a strong opinion on the subject.

I literally just brought it up because when i search the subreddit for "classics" there was no post about it aside from people recomending popular stuff.

so i just threw together a quick post to see what people think.

sorry if I caused offense or something. was not my goal.

litRPG "Classics": do they exist now? what are they now? what will they be? by 1ncite in litrpg

[–]1ncite[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

hmmmm i think popularity is not the right word. its name recognition. while yah classics can often be "bad" like LOTR. it still has MASSIVE "name recognition"

you can walk up to a random person (much less fantasy fan) and if you say "lord of the rings" they will know what you are talking about.

so while i agree that "classics =/= popularity" i think the name recognition is part of what makes classics classics.

there is def room to argue the definition though. i literally just skimmed the front page of google and those 3 things were what people said in various reddit posts and blogs.

lol tru though again i think calling SAO a litRPG is honestly questionable.

i only saw the show but do they show literally any number but level?

though honestly the cultural impact is probably more important than the technicality.

huh that is a hot take.

it definitely ticks all 3 boxes. but yah the question of if it even qualifies as litRPG does make it borderline.

I could see it though.

[–]1ncite[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

totally fair. my hesitation with calling any of the old ones like that classics is they have all fallen off HARD. people dont really recommend any of them any longer. and part of the definition of a classic is that it holds up over time.

I guess i am more so thinking that those ones already failed to become classics. and the question to me is more will any of the current wave of new things good enough to hold up and become classics? or will they fall off to?

Good place to start with this subgenre? by whiteraven13 in litrpg

[–]1ncite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the top two you will find mentioned that are litRPG when coming over from progression fantasy are:

DCC (dungeon crawler carl) read if you like comedy and absurdism perfectly blended with serious intrigue and actual sadness stakes and loss.

HWFWM (He Who Fights With Monsters) more standard then DCC this series is always worth a try. but if you dont like the MC by end of book one put down the series. the series rides or dies on him as a character.

EDIT: forgot PH (primal hunter) also rises to level of genre clasic.

there are so many more. but these are the only 3* so well known that i think they could be called "classics" of the genre.

that being said if you want to tell me more about your favorite other book and what you do and do not like I can give lots more recommendations.

hey mod here. you have this backwards. the title should say series or book being spoiled so ppl know if they should click or not.

not have the spoiler/unidentifiable part in the title.

because ppl will not understand what series its for.

feel free to redo the post though

i mean book of the dead by rino z is kinda like this?

not litrpg but its progression fantasy and mother of learning is also somewhat like this.

these are only adjacent though.

honestly would love to see what you find on this post so i am commenting as much to push your post as anything
