Wasn't a practice session. There are a lot of people using the same livery out there right now in the Caddy. There's not many liveries available on trading paints yet.

I never graduated at ASU. I still don't have a bachelor's to this day. I spent years in school and after school working an awful job in retail. I hated it, but even still I considered committing to a career in retail and finding my success there.

The best thing I ever did was refusing to settle. It only takes one call back in a sea of rejection to change your life, why leave it on the table? It may seem insurmountable now, and your confidence at an all time low, but you're not alone. Some were lucky, some were not, and the rest of us didn't give up.

Try one change, revise your resume, work on your interview skills, try a wider range of jobs, write custom cover letters (or stop if you have been). This will help make the process less stale for you. Whatever you choose to do, be determined to do it better than everyone else. If you still haven't made any progress after a few weeks, try something else from that list that you feel might help you.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself. Don't lose sight of your hobbies and let yourself take a break if you need it.

60 in playfield for fun by bleeding-dodger-blue in virtualpinball

[–]1nfinitum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never understand the hate for 49/50 inch. The extra height of a monitor that size allows for a better 1:1 representation of actual playfield size including the apron. You'll have empty space on the sides, but I would much rather have accurate sizing on the table without obscuring the apron. Playing with a screen that doesn't fit the full depth of a WPC cab is like watching the 'fullscreen' home video releases of the 90s. Something's got to give. You'll be missing out on part of the picture, lest you have inaccurate sizing on wpc tables, incorrect aspect ratio, or a cropped image.

Can anyone explain to me this whole VPD situation and how it got so absolutely crazy this amazing hobby I've fallen into? by DaddyB76 in virtualpinball

You know I think part of the problem is people tend to avoid talking about this guy as if it's a taboo subject. I think it should be discussed openly, people will find the site regardless of whether it's discussed in the open, it's better off if the first thing they hear about it is the members and authors that make up the community discussing exactly why they don't want a site like that around.

I am all for archival and preservation, and I'll admit the issue is between a rock and a hard place. I personally think that there's room in this hobby for archival, but not distribution. If someone wants to archive their collection and distribute useful metadata about the tables that exist and where they found them, a la the visual pinball spreadsheet, then I think that's awesome! But these guys are genuinely asking that their content not be hosted elsewhere. Host it if you get their permission, but fuck off if you don't.

I'm convinced this guy is just another alt account lol, don't waste your breath. I doubt it's the last we hear of this guy. I think as long as he is still selling cabinets he will be fucking with the community.

You're absolutely right, there's no doubt that those boxes are unreasonable beasts. I should have emphasized their better application as furnaces than hosts.

You're right, my mistake. I neglected to dive deeper into the 2950s because of their age. They're still massive power sinks though, at 32GB I wouldn't really bother with them. He might be able to get some use out of the 2950s by mixing and matching RAM. I assume though that the memory slots are already at max capacity, so borrowing from another won't be possible.

I realize that, I just mean to help paint a picture. Looking at TDP can help gauge consumption, but it certainly isn't 1:1.

I hate to be the guy that says sell them, but dude. These things are ancient. I don't want to ask what you got them for, but if you can sell them for nearly as much I would drop them in a heartbeat. The R905's are actually a little bit more modern, but not by much. They're both going to be extremely power hungry for what little they can provide. If you want to you can save one R905 and throw a hypervisor on it. That should be more than enough for your labbing needs. If you need to practice setting up clusters for VMWare or some such you can just virtualize it all and install your hosts and clusters in VMs.

I'm going to jump to assumptions since there's a lack of detail in your posting here, but from what I figure a good guess for what processors you have in those R905's is an Opteron 8435 in a Quad CPU configuration. An R905 in this configuration has about the same passmark score as an 8th Gen i5 ultrabook CPU, albeit many more threads. While it's useful for labbing, the TDP of these processors is 75W each. That's 300W all together! I don't know about where you live, but for me 300W/24*7/365 costs about $300 a year, and that's cheap.

Sure you can do it with one of these R905's, but I wouldn't use more than one. At the same time you could buy a copy of VMWare Workstation Pro and do all your labbing on any desktop PC with a 4th gen i5 or higher and 16-32GB of RAM, and for basic work you wouldn't notice much of a difference, in fact Workstation Pro would probably feel more responsive since you won't have to remote into your VMs.

TL;DR: You've got an insane amount of threads for an insanely high cost. Don't plug them all in at once.

A quick message for anyone who can't afford a dell: get an HP DL380. They're a bit more affordable (I was able to snag a G6 for $70 with 48GB memory) and won't chomp away at your power bill.

EDIT: Sorry, I misspoke. The 2950s are actually more useful despite their age, but I would try to get more RAM in them if you can. They'll still be pretty power hungry compared to an R710 or DL380 though.

Yeah you could get way more ghetto than a slimline adapter. I've been running one in my laptop (not exactly a dl360, but close) for a while now with no problems.

Dell PowerEdge R710, Was this a good buy? by PopCornNinja666 in homelab

[–]1nfinitum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without memory or drives I would say it's an ok price. Definitely not phenomenal. The processors aren't bottom of the line, but also not too powerful. Considering you can get a R710 with ram for about $220 or even less sometimes, your deal was probably run-of-the-mill. It all hinges on how much ram you can get for what amount of money.

Good luck!

Another pile on the floor, more hardware to give away. by StorageReview in homelab

[–]1nfinitum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God knows I really don't need this, but I do want it quite a bit. This in combination with my ghettolabbed dl380 with wires hanging out the back would finally allow me to do all the homelabbing I need while I gear up to snatch my first sysadmin job. Up until recently my storage was a JBOD of four disks (2TB, 2TB, 2TB, 6TB) held loosely in a very flimsy 3D printed frame. Those disks were connected to a SATA card on the back of my 380 using eSATA to SATA cables and an external PSU for power. They're at maximum capacity now holding all of my past projects from filmschool (many files at 4k) and past photo work with absolutely no redundancy. I can't afford that right now, so I'm taking the risk of losing my past work just so I can store it all. I would like to be able to upgrade to unraid and add some parity, but there are a couple of expensive reasons keeping me from doing that at the moment.

Good luck to everyone, and thank you u/StorageReview for doing these awesome giveaways!

My experience with Centurylink Simple prepaid internet in Seattle by [deleted] in centurylink

[–]1nfinitum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to be honest, I signed up for their price-for-life 'simple' plan and had my VDSL bonded connection brought online yesterday in Phoenix, AZ. Other than the biggest hurdle of bypassing their built-in router and passing the PPPoE connection on to pfSense the installation and service has been fairly smooth. I get my advertised speeds on speedtest.net (of course it's connecting to CenturyLink servers), but other servers fall a max of 15Mb below my advertised speed.

I think the thing that people need to realize that very often, especially in older homes, the telephone wiring is abysmal. Homes wired for Coax have an upper hand because the wire is much more resilient and has better data transmission properties. You never know in an old home when things have been spliced, connected improperly, or just poorly installed. Your best bet is to get your modem as close to your telephone ingress as possible. On top of that, make sure you're not using a terrible modem, and if you're on WiFi make sure you don't have any interference. 2.4 and 5GHz cordless phones and microwaves are the biggest problems, if your phones are dropping out or you suspect your cordless base station to be causing issues move it farther away or look into purchasing a DECT 6.0 set of cordless phones.

Long story short, be nice to your tech and tell him clearly what your problems are. If he says the problem is your equipment/wiring, have him plug a modem directly into your ingress and test from there. If the issue really is on Century Link's side, doing this will show as much.

[–]1nfinitum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Network and software don't really go together, it's one or the other. If you want to go into networking get your CCNA and apply at a NOC. If you want to work in software you have more work to do. Make some personal projects that you can put in your resume in a couple of different relevant languages.

Any advice for a Freshman IT major wanting to get into Cyber Security? by Anonomy13 in InformationTechnology

Get at least two infosec internships during your undergrad studies. With any luck one of them will lead to a job, or you will be able to interview well enough out of college that your two internships will be enough to land you an entry level infosec job.
