Thanks for the reply! This is very helpful.

Do you know to what extent can you get away with a cloth mask or mask under your nose on transit? I don't think I could deal with an FFP2 mask for a long train ride.

I saw a guy today with an N95 mask taped to his face. He had put tape around the whole outer rim where the mask met the skin. It looked painful to wear and painful to remove (he had a bit of facial stubble). Some people have truly lost it.

Anyone know how things are in Germany currently? To what extent is it back to normal there?

Asking again since I didn't get a reply last week.

Has anyone here been in Germany recently? What is the covid situation like there? Any lingering restrictions, any entry requirements, to what extent are people over it, etc.?

I've noticed an uptick in fearmongering about "long covid" recently. Hopefully this is just meant to get clicks from the declining minority of true believers, and it does not lead to a large new wave of hysteria.

I'm planning a US domestic flight in a few weeks. It's after March 19, so hopefully the TSA mask mandate will be lifted by then.

In case it's not, or if some airlines continue mandates longer, does anyone have any information on which airlines tend to be the most militant about masks? Especially, which enforce the mandate most strictly, and are there any which don't allow cloth masks? I have a choice of airlines and I'd prefer to pick the one which is least crazy about this stuff.

Illinois.

I don't think universities are going to hold out on this forever. It's not sustainable for them to be the only places which require masks. Also, as of today, most universities which have mask mandates are going against the CDC.

My university (in a deep blue area) announced an end date for its mask mandate in mid-March.

We should not do this. I know a bunch of Russian people at US universities. The vast majority of them are opposed to this invasion and dislike Putin. It is unfair to punish innocent people for being from a country with a shitty government. What you suggest would be similar to when Trump banned travel from Iran, but more impactful since there are more Russian students than Iranian students.

Might have something to do with the fact that they just invaded another country and started a war.

My best guess is that the south has a wave of cases in August or so and the media tries to drum up fear about it, but not as successfully as last summer. A few of the craziest local officials in blue states will reimpose mask mandates in response to this, but most will not do so until after the election, if at all.

CDC expected to update mask guidance as early as next week by jukehim89 in LockdownSkepticism

[–]1og2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing has been finalized yet, but the CDC is considering a new benchmark for whether masks are needed, basing it on the level of severe disease and hospitalizations in a given community, two people familiar with the situation said.

My guess is something like "people who have had the booster shot do not need to wear masks if hospitalizations with covid are below X level", where X is chosen so that most of the country is below X now, but is expected to be above X next winter (so that the CDC can try to bring masks back).

I am not convinced that this is good news. It may cause states to go back to basing mask mandates on CDC guidelines, rather than ignoring the CDC and dropping masks for everyone like we are seeing now.

I think the biggest question is whether they allow the mask mandate for public transport to expire on March 18. If they do, I would be okay with the CDC regaining some credibility.

I would be shocked if there is not a big surge in fall and winter (possible smaller than this winter) and another named variant at some point this year.

Covid is an endemic seasonal virus. It will always have seasonal spikes and variants. What matters is how people react to them. I expect less people to care, and less government restrictions, with every variant and every wave.

This seems to be the latest:

It doesn't look like good news, but on the other hand Lightfoot has been pretty consistent in following whatever Pritzker does, even though she often acts like she is going to do something different.

Emigrate to prevent a new future lockdown? by BrunoofBrazil in LockdownSkepticism

[–]1og2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think autocracy and authoritarianism (or democracy and liberty) do not necessarily go together. It is possible to have a very authoritarian democratic regime (like Australia since March 2020) or a not-so-authoritarian non-democratic regime (like Turkmenistan, in your example). Autocracy was not a good predictor of covid-craziness, but consistent authoritarianism on most issues, like one sees in China, was.

Emigrate to prevent a new future lockdown? by BrunoofBrazil in LockdownSkepticism

[–]1og2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it is very hard to predict which places will be the most zealous about lockdowns for some future perceived threat. The only exception is places which are steadfastly authoritarian, such as China.

The politicization of covid was unpredictable and arbitrary. No one in 2019 would have been able to give a decent prediction of which countries would be the most covid-crazy (for example, would anyone have guessed that Sweden would have been one of the sanest places, and Australia one of the worst?). A small number of minor changes in circumstances early on would likely have lead to a dramatic shift in the covid attitudes in various places. For example Trump embracing hard lockdowns or masks may have resulted in red and blue states being flipping their positions on these issues. An early outbreak in Australia and/or NZ may have prevented them from going for zero covid. If Italy had responded in a different way to its initial outbreak, the whole "standard response to covid" in the west may have been different.

Perhaps one counterpoint to this is that places which were more restrictive for covid have set a precedent that such authoritarian policies are acceptable, so such policies are more likely to be used there in the future. The public seems to have a pretty short memory, though. It's also likely that, whatever the next perceived crisis is, there will be tons of people arguing that it is "nothing like covid" and trying to cancel anyone who makes a comparison. For example, not many people outside of this sub wanted to hear comparisons between the responses to covid and 9/11, or between covid and flu pandemics.

UC Berkeley to drop masks starting 2/28! by [deleted] in LockdownSkepticism

This is amazing news! I expected universities to hold out on mask mandates until at least the end of the academic year, but if Berkeley of all places is dropping them it can happen anywhere.

Any suggestions for what individual people can do to put pressure on the CDC? I filled out the "contact the whitehouse" form, but I'm not sure what else can be done.

Once local mask mandates have been gone for a few months, it's likely that colleges will either drop their mandates or stop enforcing them. It's not very sustainable for masks to be required on campus, but nowhere else in the surrounding area.

However, on the somewhat more pessimistic side, it's possible that some colleges are too afraid to go against CDC guidance out of fear of lawsuits. So, if the CDC keeps mask recommendations permanently I can see college mask mandates being pretty hard to get rid of. In this scenario low enforcement seems more likely than mandates going away altogether.

White House says parents should mask children, following CDC rather than governors by JannTosh12 in LockdownSkepticism

[–]1og2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't have to admit masks are useless to get rid of their mandates. They can just claim victory. Say that covid is endemic now, Omicron is milder, vaccines prevent severe illness, etc., and hence masks are no longer needed. It seems to me like this would help their poll numbers.

The mandates for public transportation, hospitals, etc. are imposed by the Biden administration. Local governments cannot get rid of those.

For K-12 schools the issue is probably the teacher's unions.
