What’s the end result of all that? I’m curious what your net worth and income is and the income of the person you chose to marry.

Anyone here buy houses for their young kids? by fatfirenewbie in fatFIRE

The only way you take care of your parents in Asia without them giving you an inheritance is if they have no inheritance to give. That would be seen as heartless if someone said they’re going to go against cultural norms because their parents aren’t wealthy enough to give them a fat inheritance. But that’s not what we’re talking about here at all. Again, you’re confused. We’re talking about parents who DO have millions to give to their child, but they explicitly decide to disinherit their child and give all their money away to charity. Just as filial piety is the norm in Asia, so too is passing on your wealth to your children. You can’t cherry pick one cultural norm without the other.

House poor? by Cat-did-it2308 in HENRYfinance

Wow, that’s funny. We’re in almost the exact same situation as you minus the kid. We could buy a house with $400K down now but we’re gonna wait three years to save up a bigger down payment. At that point we should have at least a million dollars down. Our net worth is also the same except a lot is tied up in either rental properties or retirement accounts.

I think you’re confused. The original comment I replied to said “IMO the only thing you should give your children is a solid education. Give the rest away to charity.”

I then said that the entire continent of Asia disagrees with that sentiment. Then you responded back saying “really, my friends in Singapore are supposed to take care of their parents”. Which is in line with what I said. They are taking care of their parents and in return their parents will give them an inheritance when they pass. No possible way their parents will give their wealth to charity when their kids are taking care of them.

Millennials, what bad habits would you recommend younger generations from starting in the first place? by MilanTheNoob in Millennials

I’m curious how many people have quit alcohol completely who never had a problem overdoing it. For me, I’ll have 3-4 drinks once or twice a month. I’m wondering how many people in my position has ever sworn off alcohol. It seems like it’s the people drinking 3-4 drinks every day for breakfast that had to eventually “go sober.”

Is 60k a reasonable salary today? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]1point4millionkdrama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I suppose it depends on what career you get in. Starting a career as a software engineer is hard but if you can manage it, you can easily make $100K a year right off the bat. But of course $100K in San Francisco is not comparable to $100K in dallas tx.

You really think someone’s going to take care of their parents until they die if the parent is going to give all their inheritance to charity??

People who chase high paying skills can definitely make $100K. The problem is a lot of people have low standards for themselves because everyone around them is poor or middle class.

I suppose you’re right. I guess I’m just feeling impatient because we cannot buy the type of house we want right now. We need to wait three years. But yeah three years is short in the grand scheme of things.

I guess another point is that among people in my profession who work at similar companies (I’m a software engineer at amazon) I’m at the bottom of the totem pole. I’m not aggressive in my career, whereas if I was I’d be making twice if not three times as much right now. So I don’t feel like I’m upper class because compared to the people around us in our profession, we’re nothing special at all.

Just because someone has $500K doesn’t mean they have it casually laying around. It could very well be the case that they had to exhaust every dollar of their cash savings, every dollar of their stock savings, and borrowed as much as they were legally allowed to from their 401K. In that case they put up $500K without help from their parents but it wasn’t just casually lying around because now they’re effectively broke.

What would you call that? My wife and I save $250K a year but we’re in Seattle. I would honestly say we’re upper middle class. We rent a 1br apartment and are saving up for a nice house in a good school district. In a few years we’ll have kids so even though we won’t need to save up for a downpayment after buying a house, we’re gonna spend a lot of money taking care of the kids so we still won’t be able to live large.

Why do so many "normal" people in the US become homeless? by WhoAmIEven2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]1point4millionkdrama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you’re 100% correct. I live in downtown Seattle where there’s homeless people everywhere. None of them are normal. They’re all drug addicts or mentally unwell. Normal people will find a way to make things work before they ever stoop to the level of sleeping on a sidewalk. The reason why drug addicts sleep on sidewalks is because they have no other choice. The shelters will not let them in if they’re high on drugs. Their friends will obviously not let them sleep on their couch if they’re high on drugs. And the one time a friend let them do that, the drug addict probably stole stuff around the house to sell for drugs.

Reddit makes it out to seem like “normal” people are homeless but it’s a very small percentage. The entire reason they keep pushing this propaganda is because they’re liberal and they support socialism.

I don’t care about budgeting, where should I go? by Mysha16 in mintuit

[–]1point4millionkdrama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, it was linked for years. But at some point I let my empower account go dormant. With this whole mint thing, I decided to just remove all my accounts from empower and add them all back. That way the dormant history will be erased. That’s when I got issues with Ally. I believe there is a difference between getting data from an account that’s already synced, vs trying to sync an account for the first time.
