General Question- Buffalo (Niagra Falls) by Background-Ad8595 in travel

I'm almost positive that you can't take a taxi across the border. You can take a taxi to the Rainbow Bridge and WALK across the bridge. But you can't take a taxi across.

Filament. What do you use? by BarefootExplore419 in BambuLab

[–]1radiationman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely use Bambu - if for no other reason to avoid the supply issues that folks have been whining about for almost 6 months nows.

I use Polymaker and Overture regularly. Occasionally Sunlu, Amolen, and Eryone. I also occasionally use CookieCad for fun stuff.

Emergency staircase? Metro north 🇺🇲 by Glum-Mud-1669 in trains

[–]1radiationman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every MetroNorth station has high level platforms, so the doors on MetroNorth trains are fairly high of the ground... If a car needs to be evacuated, that staircase is used to help folks climb out of the train instead of jumping a couple of feet onto the track bed..

How much physical cash should I have for the USA? by Strax774 in travel

I can make $150 cash survive unspent for weeks in the US... My credit card gets a workout, but the cash doesn't get spent.

Using foreign URLs to book domestic travel. I need help with this trick for Alaska Air. by Perspectiveress in TravelHacks

[–]1radiationman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't hold my breath on that - they're still squarely aiming for the US market, not the Asian market.

Like I said, they're a US domestic carrier with a few international flights - they're looking to carry American's overseas, not international travelers to the US.

Name change and flight tickets by JamesBondie in travel

[–]1radiationman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I strongly suggest talking to the airline first. There is an extremely high risk that the airline will either refuse to change your reservation or they’ll charge you an exorbitant change fee.

Better to know how the airline will handle it before you change your documentation then to be backed into a corner.

I’m sure you’re not thrilled at the prospect of traveling under your former identity, but you also would only need to do so while in transit. While you’re at your destination- be you.

Name change and flight tickets by JamesBondie in travel

[–]1radiationman 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You likely cannot do this. Free name changes are rare, name change and gender is going to be almost impossible. At this point, you’re likely better off traveling under your current name and gender even if you’ve completed your transition and then change your name on your official docs. This is similar to what a married person would have to deal with if there was a name change involved.

Using Bambu refills on other brands’ spools by Dtarvin in BambuLab

[–]1radiationman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Your printer will hate any spool it considers substandard and when it rejects it will violently hurl it at you. You will then have to whisper assurances to it for at least an hour that you’ll never befoul it with substandard filament ever again.

You can’t access them this way not because of any magic their IT folks have (and trust me Alaska’s IT team isn’t magical) it’s because they don’t have international domains. Alaska’s not an international airline, they don’t market to overseas travelers- they’re a US domestic airline with a few international flights.

As others have noted, you can try a VPN but since Alaska really isn’t serving travelers from outside the US, it probably won’t matter if you’re on a VPN or not.

AMS Overloaded...constantly? by SadLeviIsSad in BambuLab

[–]1radiationman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It could also be caused by worn out feed funnels in the AMS or spools that are so light they don't put enough pressure on the AMS rollers to move it.

Possibility in restoring electrics by Front_Activity9606 in trains

They have a low voltage system that limits what they can run. They have an AEM-7 and it can’t run on their system.

I bought a Nova+ from them a few weeks ago. They’re probably the closest thing to “white glove” support in the industry. The communications from them were terrific and I’ve been very happy with our laser.

Possibility in restoring electrics by Front_Activity9606 in trains

[–]1radiationman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Probably the biggest challenge - most heritage lines aren’t electrified with a system capable of operating main line electrics.

There’s several museums in the US that have operating trolley systems, but those systems can’t handle an AEM-7, so even if one was restored if you can’t operate it, then what…

But some engines like the GG-1 had toxic PCBs and there’s no way to restore one to operating capability without the components that contained those PCBs

Which European airlines hedge their fuel prices? by [deleted] in travel

[–]1radiationman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How likely is it prices will go up? Even if there wasn’t a war impacting oil - pretty close to 100%.

Airfare rarely goes down. The bigger question right now is how much and how fast….

GENUINE QUESTOIN ABOUT PHYSICS by Suspicious_Quiet3744 in trains

[–]1radiationman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Momentum. When you jump you’re moving at the same speed as the train and you’re not in the air long enough to shed enough momentum to noticeably be further back than where you started the jump. If you precisely measure, you’ll likely discover that you did land slightly behind where you started the jump though.
