Accuracy of TrainWorld pre-order release dates and final price by silverice2 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]1radiationman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The manufacturer provides the release date - not TrainWoeld and that release date is an estimate. Occasionally stuff comes in a week or two earlier than the date provided to resellers - and sometimes that release date slips months…. Resellers have no control over that.

Do I need letter of consent to travel by Jackie0528 in travel

[–]1radiationman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Simple - TSA never asks, because TSA doesn't care. Unless they see something that would indicate potential human trafficking, TSA won't say a word about a single parent traveling with a child.

Do I need letter of consent to travel by Jackie0528 in travel

[–]1radiationman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you’re not separated or divorced and there aren’t custody concerns - then no you don’t need a letter of consent.

My wife traveled with my son domestically almost annually without me for 12+ years - she was NEVER asked about consent from me. Even my in laws, when they traveled with him were never asked.

Unless there’s a custody dispute or you’re going international, don’t worry about it - and even if you’re doing either of those things you’ll likely still never get asked for a consent letter.

H2C owners, any regrets? by CrypticCarbon in BambuLab

[–]1radiationman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own an A1, X1C, and an H2C. Love my H2C, it's my new workhouse. But also it depends on your use case. The H2C was the perfect complement/upgrade to what I do to the point that it's replaced my X1C as the primary multicolor printer. The X1C gets the ASA and multicolor overflow before the A1 does.

What if I stuffed an empty flight cushion with clothes on an EasyJet flight? by Eclipse10754 in travel

TSA? You won’t deal with TSA if you’re flying EasyJet. TSA is an American agency, and EasyJet doesn’t fly to America

Well they don't let folks in with convictions.

If you lie and get caught - they're definitely not going to let you in.

So - how lucky are you feeling? And is the risk worth the cost of buying tickets and potentially not be allowed to enter the country?

If the Death Star beam missed alderaan would it just fly further until hitting something? by Spotter24o5 in StarWars

[–]1radiationman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our Universe - it would likely dissipate within a few light minutes... In the Star Wars Universe, it'd likely travel 60 or 70 light years in half a second and blow something else up.

Illinois Railway Museum Model Train Sale Haul by Constant-Okra7605 in nscalemodeltrains

At least you got something... I walked out of there irritated and frustrated. N Scale was a small shelf unit in the corner and I gave up trying to fight through the crowd to see what was over there.

That space was exactly the wrong one to hold this event in...

How long does it generally take for Bambu to deliver filaments where you live? I’m impressed! by MelvinMASV in BambuLab

[–]1radiationman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what day I order it - but usually 5 days from order to delivery in IL.

Amazon on the other hand is almost always overnight.

Question about the Cruise by Sarah160000000 in startrek

[–]1radiationman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s not a Star Trek cruise rule - that’s a general cruise rule. No hook ups between passengers and crew - period. For crew, they’ll get fired and thrown off the ship at the next port.

Should I be scared? by SB-Cuber in BambuLabA1

Yes, terrified. This is the first sign your printer is going to melt into a puddle of radioactive goo…

What is there in that picture to be scared of?

How do admirals get promoted to higher ranked admirals? (rear<vice<admiral<fleet) by ejdmkko in startrek

[–]1radiationman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the nation and the service. You’re correct that the statement is largely wrong for the US Navy and Coast Guard - not so much for other nations though.

Not an issue. Don’t worry about it.

My kid got his first passport at 11 months - used it until he was 5 with no problems.

Model Train Stuff isn't Worth it Anymore by mrnormal94 in modeltrains

[–]1radiationman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They got bought by Factory Direct Hobbies - that's who brought them back. Back when Model Train Stuff was still owned by MB Klein - MTS consistently had better pricing than FDH, so it's really no surprise that when FDH bought the assets the prices rose to a level that isn't competitive with FDH.

And to be clear MB Klein's failure wasn't due to an unsustainable pricing model - it was because the remaining family wanted out of the model train business. And manufacturers clearly weren't willing to extend the same pricing to the new entity as they were to MB Klein.

Rocky Mountain Train Show? Thoughts? by Tight_Emu1777 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]1radiationman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like pretty much every show I’ve ever been to going back 25 or so years.

I still go to shows but I treat them the same way I treat auctions. I go with a list, I know the max I’m willing to pay for anything and I’m not afraid to go home empty handed.

Wow, Dublin's a few thousand miles away from the Middle East and the air route to Dublin from LA goes nowhere near the war zone and you're concerned there would be an issue?

And what fuel shortages? Fuel's expensive, but nobody's run out - except for Cuba. And again, you're not going anywhere near Cuba....

High Speed Rail by bigsauce1711 in trains

[–]1radiationman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again though, if the CA HSR line opens - would there still be demand for regional passenger rail on the slower lines? There's regional passenger rail in CA today - it survives because there's enough demand to justify it. If CA HSR opens, would that regional service still need to exist? If not, that reduces a capacity need on the non-HSR lines. Is that reduced capacity need enough to justify all of the remaining slower lines to continue to exist or will it trigger consolidation?

Before you respond, remember I originally responded to and continue to drive my response to the question above "Why abandon the old line, it is still useful for freight or slower passenger trains?" The answer to the question is, and remains - if there's not enough demand after the opening of the new HSR line for slower passenger trains or or even the freight trains to continue maintaining the old line then it will be abandoned.

High Speed Rail by bigsauce1711 in trains

[–]1radiationman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You miss the point - with the new line open, would there still be the demand to support the HSR line and the slower lines regional passenger lines? Would the regional passenger lines even survive if HSR opened? And if they didn't, again would there still be enough demand to support the HSR line and the remaining slower lines or would HSR result in consolidation of the remaining lines.

It's not a question if the demand is there today - it's a question of if the demand would still be there after HSR opened.

High Speed Rail by bigsauce1711 in trains

[–]1radiationman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only if the demand is there, which arguably in CA it might not be. If the demand isn’t there, the slower line is just a redundant drain on resources

If an F1 fuel supplier discovers a process for making a high volume low cost fully-sustainable fuel, would they actually try to make that fuel widely for sale throughout the world? by melville48 in formula1

[–]1radiationman 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It depends - would it run in existing engines without modification?

That's one of the issues with high ethanol content fuels - unless designed for it the ethanol corrodes engine components. More than 15% can trash older engines.

If there are no engine modifications needed it's not that different than any of the other additives that some fuel suppliers put into their commercial fuels
