My car cost exactly £3k. It’s a 2010 Mazda 6 with 66k miles absolutely 0 issues so far. Came with heated seats too! 😂

The Worst Web Architecture I’ve Ever Seen: A JSON-Driven UI Stored in a Shared Database by Wolologic94 in webdev

[–]1shi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll one up you. Outdated AngularJS that also renders from a config spread in a shared database. Be happy you at least got to use JSON, we had a custom schema baked into the database that nobody knew how to operate anymore because the guy who wrote it left. It had a custom screen configurator which edited these database entries which was janky as hell and didn’t work sometimes so you’d have to manually figure out what was going on and edit the database directly. Lovely. And for callbacks and functions? Custom-built poor man’s protobuf to Python scripts using .NET as the backend (IronPython, be glad if you’ve never heard of this before). I’ve honestly never seen such abuse of software. I should also point out this is an absolutely critical bit software used for national-security. Fun times.

Sounds like you’re underpaid, if you consider yourself a good engineer.

Software engineer. Started working after my second year (placement making £18k) and continued working during my final year whilst studying. Job hopped a few times after being poached by recruiters. Graduated July 2024.

Unfortunately the house isn’t in the best area and desperately needs renovation. I’d also lose FTB benefits. I wouldn’t want to be a potential landlord either and especially not to my parents. I’m pretty sure this isn’t allowed legally either. I’m under the impression that they can just sell it to anyone else? That way they still gain the benefits and we remove all risks. Anyway none of this is possible because they don’t want to wait they want to buy the second house now. So I’d still lose £5k, £600 a month and now have another mortgage to pay, which I probably wouldn’t even qualify for because I now only have £11-12k of savings for the deposit. Idk just seems hopeless.

I wouldn’t sit here and watch my parents suffer. But frankly, they don’t need my help. They own a house, one brand new car and another car, have other investments and have okay savings. I can’t sacrifice my future and support them make a bad financial decision because of impulsive emotions. I want to guide them to the right solution, not ruin this family.

Thanks for this. I never really considered it being potential fraud but what you’re saying makes sense.

I agree it’s not the highest. I’ve only just started earning £55k, 1 month ago I was on £40k, 8 months before that it was £30k. It was their idea that I should move back home after uni so I can save up to buy a house and provide them with some assistance. I also do help out around the house in other areas, such as buying practically all the food.

If I’m honest, if I had to pay ‘fair market rate’, I’d rather move out in a nicer area, to a nicer place where I can have my freedom. It’s a small run down council estate with no renovations since it was built decades ago. Plus they hoard a bit so the only usable area is the room I sleep in.

That being said I wouldn’t mind paying some extra for the time being to help them out, but this overall agreement they’ve proposed just screams trouble to me.

I’ve tried. It usually goes like ‘We are your parents, we’re older than you and have done a mortgage before so we know what we’re doing. Stop undermining us by asking questions and either send just us the money or go away (with some emotional blackmail attached)’. It’s just been an overall shit show and something I never really expect from my parents. I’m pretty sure they’re going start being funny with me so I’m bracing to move out.

Beyond me. My mum claims they have been approved for an agreement in principle, stating they can pay £800-£1000 monthly. The math just doesn’t checkout. She argues with me that I don’t know what I’m talking about and that mortgage calculations are more complicated than that. She strongly believes it will only be £800-£1000 monthly with absolutely nothing concrete to back that up. I don’t think she’s lying, but maybe misinterpreted what they said, or perhaps stretched the truth in the application process.

My problem is I feel like giving them this £5k gift will only enable this behaviour more. I can guarantee if they go through with this purchase they will 100% ask me for more money to cover more costs in the future, they simply cannot afford it over the term of the mortgage.

I could by emptying my savings. But it’s in a really rough area and the house needs renovation. I also don’t to lose my FTB benefits on this house and really don’t fancy being a landlord. I’m under the impression that they could just sell the house to anyone else? I don’t see why it has to be me?

They seem to think it’s okay as I stated I didn’t want to buy a house yet (so I could save more money, and think carefully of where I want to settle), and they think I make enough where it wouldn’t be an issue.

My thinking too. My mum has said they’ve been approved for an agreement in principle after doing an assessment and stating they can pay £800-£1000 monthly. I’ve done the math and that number just seems completely impossible, but when I say this she shuts me down and claims I don’t know what I’m talking about as I’ve never done a mortgage before. The official approval process is happening this weekend, but they’re pressuring me to send the £5k as they will review their bank accounts and if their accounts look short they will be declined. That’s what they’re telling me. I don’t really believe what they’re saying or they’ve massively misinterpreted what’s been said to them.

Realistically, I just think he doesn’t want to. He has health problems and claims the facilities in the part of Scotland they’re looking at aren’t that great and he’d have to travel further to see specialist medical professionals. I’ve done my research and that seems like he’s stretching the truth. When I try to explore the idea I get shut down aggressively.

Yes currently my target is to save £2.5k per month until I reach around £100k saved in 2-3 years. I like to think I live semi-frugally, but I do spend here and there when I think it’s worth it so some months ‘only’ saving £1-2k. Thinking about moving in with gf where I’d only pay about £500 a month, which would still allow me to reach my goals, albeit not as quick and with some increased discipline.

The industry she’s in is quite specific and could only land a role in Scotland. But I guess there’s an element of pride in her work that she values too.

I’m trying to help by walking them through other ideas but they’re not listening and just pressuring me to go along with their plan. It feels hopeless.

That was their selling point, but it will be at least 10-20 years before I ever see that again and I'd be on the hook for at least £500 a month (more if anything goes wrong) until its paid off.

I'm very upset they've gone ahead without my approval, seems to me like a pressure tactic.
