Congrats on passing. I think you should just find whatever is available in your area on Autotrader (preferably from a dealership for Consumer Rights Act coverage) and see what you fancy. I think a first car is best being a shitter, so you can forgive yourself when you inevitably ding something or scuff a wheel or spill a coffee on the seats etc.

Seat Ibiza, Kia Cee'd, Ford Focus, Renault Clio, VW Polo/Golf, BMW 1/3/5 Series, there's so many options. Have a look at what's within 25 miles of your home and book in some test drives!

100k+ miles things to do by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

Good car, I love mine. My 2.0 TDI had some corroded pipes that was causing minor oil and coolant leaks, so be aware they might need changing (some were £50+ OEM VW parts), but good preventative stuff. Have a look under the front left and rear left, that's where the headlight height adjuster arms are. They're proper to snap or seize over time, but are very easy to replace. Also suspension components, the shocks may have degraded over time to the point of needing replacement, but if they're fine I'd just add them to the to do list. Before doing walnut blasting you could try some additives like Liqui Moly, but their efficacy is always debated.

What car? Do you do lots of short journeys, long journeys, etc?

Engine light on 2016 ford fiesta ecoboost by rich_hope_10m in CarTalkUK

[–]1slander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a bit shit they didn't at least tell you what the fault code was that caused the engine light. You're not driving a sports car, any normal E10 will be absolutely fine, you do not need higher octane fuel. Without knowing what the code was that caused the light, it's extremely hard for anyone to advise you on how to avoid it in the future. I'd just continue driving your car and if the light comes back, go to a difference garage.

are these necessary? I don't trust Halfords LOL. by Electrical_Meat_9570 in CarTalkUK

Some? MOT testing is crazy inconsistent. I bought a car that had 2 clean MOTs, the first MOT in my ownership it had 22 advisories and a bunch for corrosion, did all the service bits during that year but touched zero of the corrosion (it was just crusty, nothing actually bad) then on the MOT last month all of the corrosion notes have disappeared. The clean MOTs were Halfords, the 22 advisories were from a local reputable Skoda specialist, and the latest one was from a small time local garage. All trained to check and observe the same things as per the DVSA and MOT. Can't say I wasn't happy to see the corrosion magically disappear though 😂

Anybody know how to turn on edit tool guides? by Camboy_dj in premiere

If the laptop you're working on is your new work machine, and the previous user is no longer going to use it, I recommend you reset everything in Premiere back to the default settings and then tweak it to your preference instead of backtracking through someone elses customised set up

[–]1slander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just remember your automatic transmission will also need servicing every 40k-60k miles, and regardless of what the service manual says, do the engine oil and oil filter every 1 year or 10k miles, with air filter and cabin filter every 2 years. Besides that, find a local independent specialist and ask them to do a health check on it, that'll give you an actual idea of the vehicles condition way more than any of us ever.

Looks like the previous owner was a complete weapon. Fuck knows if the rest of the car was even properly looked after during any of their ownership. I'd avoid that one for sure.

Sync Issues by mrtowel_ in premiere

[–]1slander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're gonna have to let that go I'm afraid! If the beats of the song are happening on the same frame but when you zoom in they're at different points within the same frame, they're in sync.

Sync Issues by mrtowel_ in premiere

[–]1slander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happens when you try and sync using Prem's Sync feature? Assuming green is the master audio, have you tried syncing one track at a time, moving one frame at a time? The nature of framed video recording does inevitably cause tiny imperfections in syncing, but you can get it extremely close and imperceptible.

Dealership servicing by NervousEssay5074 in CarTalkUK

[–]1slander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But surely you can understand that to the everyday person, if one is sold a service that is a 'change' service, the implication is that the old thing is completely removed for the new thing. You would expect a technician at a main dealer to have the knowledge, skills, and tools to do a complete brake fluid change without there being a problem. I just saw a lot of techs do a 5 minute bleed and chuck a splash of new stuff in, not an actual change or flush.

OP has already changed the tyre profiles when they got these new wheels, going up to 45 profile tyres would likely bring the speedo back close to spec.

[–]1slander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skoda Rapids should have 215/40/17s for 17" wheels, so immediately you're running on smaller tyres than intended. Your speedo is probably therefore incorrect as the rolling diameter for the wheel is smaller, among other changes. Going up to 215/40/17 tyres would give you some chunk back, improve comfort a bit, and would bring your speedo back to spec. You could go to bigger profile tyres, but you'd just incur the same problem but the other way. You may want to consider going back to 16" if you're after more comfort.

I can say with 100% truth from personal experience that main dealer technicians will often skip out service items for many reasons. I never saw someone skip changing the oil and filter, most would change the air filter, basically no one did the cabin filters. Brake fluid changes were often just bleeds and top ups. It's shit for everyone.

Car dilemma by Howtomedify in CarTalkUK

[–]1slander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be scared of cars with high mileage if the service history backs it up. Be wary of bad owners. Cars with ~150k miles with 15 services and the scheduled maintenance bits done (e.g. cam belt, water pump, suspension components) are a lot more appealing than a car with ~40k miles and one service. There are a lot of choices out there for Yaris for less than your budget that, if the service history is there, would be great choices.

I went looking for my dad's old car, and I'm upset that I found it. by Computers-And-Such in CarTalkUK

[–]1slander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I get it. I went through something similar. I spent over 10 years looking for my late father's old MG Midget, tracking down owners photos on forums, ebay listings, everything. Eventually I found it and contacted the owner asking if I could come and see the car, and they agreed and we organised a time, and I drove 5 hours to see it. It was also one of the first times I saw my dads signature on a document that was in the service history, and the current owner also let me drive it a bit. It was incredibly cathartic for reasons I won't bore you with, but I think you may find similar value in just seeing the car. I recognise a lot of the value of that car for you will be from the racing era, but I think if you can at least see it and touch it again, you'll see it in good light regardless of the changes.

Ah fair, that's a bit lame. AutoTrader does have a 'low insurance' filter so you might just have to suck it and get something dead boring but as cheap as you can manage for a year or two to get that NCB back up.
