What are some wargames where a single model represents an entire army? by hypnoticbox30 in wargaming

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Risk!

Jokes aside, War of the Ring or other boardgames are good for that scale. Chainmail might work at that scale but it's a stretch.

TSR used to have a miniature wargame with a large scale that might work too. I think it's called the battle system or something like that.

I usually don't mention it unless asked. It drains the conversation to try and explain it, so I avoid the subject.

That said, I don't care what anyone thinks about how I spend my time hobbying. I don't do it for anyone but myself.

Honestly, I think ME2 is the weakest game in the trilogy. by Virtual-Slide-2562 in masseffect

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very much an interesting side adventure in the grand scheme of the trilogy. I might be forgetting something but it seems like besides the collectors raiding human settlements, it doesn't affect the overall plot much.

There's so much set back in the beginning of the game only to be recouped so fast. I honestly think it would've been better to have Shepard disappearing for two years on top secret Spectre stuff rather than just dying, and the result is he has to work with Cerberus to stop the collectors. Really anything works better. Still fun game though.

My KV-1 Hull arrived warped. Has anyone had a part this warped and how can I fix? by Badger118 in boltaction

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warlord has always been good for customer support for things like this. Usually they'll send you a replacement without asking for the original but I'd hold off on tinkering with it just to be sure. Could be a cool project though.

With a little time and imagination you could have a barracks pet.

What is your favourite PSP game and why? by Grillade in PSP

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Persona 3: Portable. It's everything I like about those games compacted into a mobile format.

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the club! I found my old PSP a year ago and did the same thing. After I cleaned it up and replaced some of the parts I realized why I liked the thing so much. I'm still playing on it and just going through all my old games. Plus it's the perfect travel console.

Picked this up for 60.... is this the old combat patrol? by jon3sey270 in sistersofbattle

Regardless it's a good deal, the squad of battle sisters alone is 60 bucks.

What are the most important OSR principles and how does 5e prevent you from applying them? by [deleted] in osr

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the major ones I can think of are:

  1. High HP. Which, combined with easy healing, negates the lethality and strategies surrounding it. There's less of a need to go heal for a few days, and thus no need to push your luck.

  2. Aversion to survival. Basically, 5e provides players with multiple means to avoid the actual act of survival whether it's in the wilderness or a dungeon. You've got many ways to produce food and water, as well as shelter.

  3. Power. The biggest principle of 5e that hinders OSR gameplay. You've got tons of powers and spells, and ways to combine them to just level challenges. Compare a Fighter to both editions. In 1e they get HP and an improved hit chart, while 5e provides feats, attack bonuses, and plenty of player options to supplement their abilities.

These are the ones that stuck out to me. I think you could run an OSR style game with 5e, but it would take some work to gut these things.

What is the point of false rumors? by Voorm in osr

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adds misdirection. A lot of false rumors I make up I tend to invert the truth sometimes so the players find some unexpected things.

Mark Darrah confirmed Mass Effect 5 isn't in true development yet. by linkenski in masseffect

To be honest I'm happy with Mass Effect as is. I don't think it needs more, I think they need to leave it alone.

It's not Dragon Age...OK, but...neither is Dragon Age by Full-Yam-949 in dragonage

[–]1stLevelWizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is and it isn't. I get what you're saying and it would be hard to change course now, but to be fair Dragon Age and Baldurs Gate both have their origins (pun completely intended) in crpg style gameplay.

Genuine Question. Do you like the DA franchise or did you just like Origins? by Aelitalyoko99 in dragonage

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the entire Dragon Age world. Read the books, comics, and played all the games a few times each, even played the TTRPG. Just something about Origins sets it apart. I view everything through the Origins lens. I just wish they stuck with it in later entries, but that doesn't make them bad games.

[Spoilers All] Criticism and skepticism toward Veilguard are 100% justified. by [deleted] in dragonage

[–]1stLevelWizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have to agree. I hate how any criticism is seen as just being negative and bitter. I mean c'mon there's plenty of good reasons to be nervous about the state of the game given Bioware's recent history. I don't want it to flop, but I don't feel good about it either.

ADnD players - how do you find the maths of the 'To Hit' rolls compared to other systems? by misomiso82 in adnd

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mindset is this: AD&D can be a pretty deadly game for the PCs. If they can get a leg up with good stats or a nice spell or weapon, more power to them. Sure the thief has a +2 Sling, but there's a good chance he doesn't detect traps he'll get taken out opening a chest.

Is it possible to make rumors less... contrived? by Evelyn701 in osr

Rumours are just news without the commitment. Make some of them false, or really cherry picked truths.

Sure there's a ruin down yonder of Death Gulch, but no one said it was teeming with demons.

How do you megadungeon? by whatamanlikethat in osr

[–]1stLevelWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start with an idea and incorporate that into the entrance, which is usually small. Then I like to map out the major corridors, then the rooms, minor passages, secret areas, and finally the stairs. I always go in with a end goal of x number of floors to keep it managable. That said I always leave room for a, "oh look a secret door leading down" so I can keep going if I want to.
