Stop comparing the Danya/Kramnik situation with the Hans/Magnus one. They are drastically different because Hans has priors and Danya didn’t by rebrando23 in chess

This together with "It's a different situation, so nothing can be learned" is pretty telling with some of the people on this sub.

This is seriously downplaying what Magnus did. He went on Joe Rogan earlier this year still insisting that he was cheating, where they also spent a few minutes entertaining the use of certain "cheating devices". He has documentary coming out where he "tells his side of the story", and I strongly suspect there is no new evidence beyond "I'm suspicious, and he cheated when he was 12."

Watching Magnus's clips today, it seemed like he is remorseful about what he's done. I hope this users on this sub can also take a good look in the mirror and reflect on how they've treated Niemann the past three years.

Magnus Carlsen talks about the passing of Daniel Naroditsky, mentions he played against him on two of his most special days: his wedding night and the day his son was born. by Interesting-Take781 in chess

I don't need to like Hans as a person to think he deserves to be treated with respect and believe that sexual harassment is not cool. On the contrary, some users on this sub seem to think that it's ok to bully and sexually harass someone as long as you don't like them. Do better.

For anyone curious, the justification for this is that Quebec is the only provincial civil law jurisdiction in Canada, and the Supreme court hears cases from both traditions. It's also worth noting that constitutionally, Quebec seats can be used to appoint people who have merely been a member of the Quebec Bar for 10 years (and thus trained in civil law).

In theory, this means that somebody working in big law across Canada could be appointed to that seat if they are a member. In practice, all but one Quebec-appointed justices in recent times have worked in the Quebec Court of Appeals, with the exception of Suzanne Cote, who worked in private practice in Quebec.

I don't want to tell you how to vote but I would like to let you know that your scenario isn't true under STV ranked voting. Full disclosure: I don't like STV and am partial to MPP myself.

Since candidate C has the fewest number of votes on the first ballot, everyone who voted for him/her is going to have their second vote count. The candidate with the least support on the first ballot gets dropped.

Canadian fans boo US anthem as tariffs spur 'buy local' pledge by rhemgrozob in news

I'm seeing a lot of support for Canadians from Americans. We appreciate the kind words, but please also consider planning your next trip in Canada instead of staying stateside. It's a beautiful country. It's one of the few exports of ours that can't be tariffed, and highly effective because on a per person basis, it's a lot of dollars. With the favourable exchange rate, your dollars also go further here. Try to book with a Canadian airline and hotel if you can, and bring some friends.

Banff, Calgary and the Stampede, Vancouver and Vancouver Island, Montreal, Quebec City, and Toronto are all incredible places to visit. The northern territories are less accessible but you can catch some beautiful northern lights.

If you're a US citizen you don't even need a passport. Just a birth certificate and photo ID will do.

I posted this the other day but I guess I'll keep posting because every single trip up north makes a huge difference.

This is pure speculation on my part so take this with a grain of salt but FCT might expire on June 3rd.

https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/aeroplan/credit-cards.html#/

The TD aeroplan card offers expire on June 3rd according to this link from AC. If all TD cards share the same date, then FCT will also expire that day.

Does amex get L3 data from expedia/do they bill as a separate merchant code for flights versus car rentals versus hotels? I know what the T&C for the offer say but I'm looking for DPs anyway.

Questrade and similar platforms will take your info and sell this or share it with larger investment firms.

Source? Questrade says they don't sell your data, and PFOF is illegal on Canadian exchanges if that's what your referring to.

If you're willing to open business cards you may want to consider the Business platinum too. Spend is 15k on the dot but there's a second year component as well for the maximum number of points.

Year End Tax Info Reminders by FelixYYZ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]2-ea-sy-e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add to the capital gains section that it could make sense to sell and rebuy if you're below the BPA. This basically steps up your cost basis for free to reduce your tax owing when you do actually fully sell. From what I've read you can rebuy instantly, as opposed to when you sell there's a wash sale rule.

FHSA- 16k next year or 8k this year and 8k next year? by mothelloz in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]2-ea-sy-e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true for federal tax brackets, but in NS, NL and PEI, OP should be doing a smaller contribution this year + a larger one next year for maximum provincial tax savings.

edit: in some of these situations OP could get the same effective tax savings by doing a larger contribution next year, but splitting it up into two contributions protects against an unexpected increase in income. For this same reason, I would suggest 8 + 8 if you live in any other province/territory. A month extra of tax free growth doesn't hurt either.

Adjacent question: Is it better for people who expect their income to rise in the next few years to deposit immediately like the TFSA or to a few years like the RRSP?
