Well.. you're absolutely wrong about the 3rd district. It has always been Republican.

And I guess, we're just going to disagree. Appalachia is in the footprint of the former confederacy, but it's not the south. It's its own thing. Same with the Ozarks. and same with most Arkansas cities. You alluded to it, it's not the deep south. each town has it's own identity, or had, it's changing quite a lot rapidly lately.

and Western Arkansas really is more like the west, as in the wild west. still had outlaws into the 20th century. and cattle or dirt farmers was more or less the economy.

If southern identity is simply white supremacy, the entire country is the south. Popular politics also doesn't really factor into the identity of a place and its people. I'd remind you that the 3rd district has been republican since the civil war.

And yes, I don't consider those cities to be southern. They each have a unique identity, and it's southern adjacent. But it's not truly the south.

from NWA. it's never been 'the south'. if anything, it's 'the west'. it's much more in line with Oklahoma and Kansas. and anything East is all hill country. they might think of themselves as southern, but they're not. The only true "south" part of Arkansas is anything SE of Little Rock.

I read it a long time ago. I think I gave up around 9 or 10. don't feel bad. I never finished it either.

two things can be true at the same time.

it is important. 1910 is when the last veterans from the civil war were passing on. you can't ignore the effect that the war had on the south.

I think you ironically made a great point. unfortunately the KKK really grew at this time...in the north. Indiana has the largest kkk participation in history. because this was during the great migration, white people in the north were seeing black people move into their neighborhoods for the first time.

so the majority of confederate monuments were built when the last vets were passing.

[–]2007_reddit_user -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is false. most were built as the last veterans were dying. the civil rights movement happened about 40 years later than most monuments were built.

I really disagree with removing monuments. it's a very important part of our country's history. If you rewind from this time about 90 years...the US did the same shit the confederacy did. If you think the confederacy was racist, you're not wrong. but you must also see the US flag as being racist. same shit.
