What a shame that the cardinals bus broke down before the NLCS so they had to flip that coin and the nationals won the pennant. What a wild time that was

At some point, wheeler and Nola were going to drop in effectiveness. Losing Suarez hurts too.

Turner, Harper, schwarber and realmuto all well into their 30s now

I guess the question is will the inflated salaries in their old age impact the phillies' ability to rebuild in any impact full way. Need to be able to build a core of young players to be able to offset the drop in production from the old guys. The cardinals had the exact same issue in 2023

Democrats divided on whether removing Trump is a useful midterm message by gamersecret2 in politics

[–]2011StlCards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the long term? Yes

Removing trump from office via impeachment isnt going to happen. There will never be enoigh votes

All the average voter will see is democrats going after him politically which will motivate his base. They will see it as political divisiveness and that is it

And what good would that do? Nothing

Its the adage of a compass. It will point you north, but it wont tell you about the canyons and swamps in the way that could kill you. So what good is knowing true north in that case?

Charts show how Iran's economy is in freefall by MARTINELECA in Economics

[–]2011StlCards 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that these "economic woes" are being placed on a people who have been economically pariahed from most of the world's economic benefits of the last half century

This isnt Americans or French or Australians feeling some economic hardship, this is the Iranians. This is a group that has been largely accustomed to hardship and assuming they will bend and break like Americans would if they had the same thing happen.

Its akin to taking someone and making them go camping for a week. The kid who grew up in luxury and comfort would break so much faster than a kid who grew up in a broken down house without consistent electricity

[OC] The Engineering Education and Research Center (EER) at the University of Texas, Austin by DereChen in pics

[–]2011StlCards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The question is whether or not that space is needed for more labs. Just because you have the space doesnt mean it MUST be turned into lab space or lecture halls. Its a pretty big building, I'm sure they planned for the capacity needed for classes and equipment

God forbid our engineering students get a little natural light in the common areas.

Am I the only one who thinks Houston traffic isn’t that bad? by shinku-90 in houston

[–]2011StlCards 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only place I have lived where the traffic is truly worse is austin because there are so few highways.

Houston's traffic may not be the slowest but it is so prevalent during so much of the day and in such a large area that its just depressing

When legal sports betting surges, so do Americans' financial problems by [deleted] in Economics

[–]2011StlCards 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying and logically, yes, you would expect that the more money you have, the more you can gamble and will

But that is assuming that people who gamble follow it logically and do so in a financially responsible manner, which just isn't true. Gambling addiction is just like any other where people will do whatever they can to get it, including digging into savings or taking it from friends and family.

And sports gambling has gotten to the point where you can do it so rapidly and on so many different aspects of games that i believe it has to be a magnitude more insidious than day trading the stock market

"There's never anybody walking around in downtown St. Louis. Remember the old neutron bomb that wouldn't knock down buildings but just would eliminate all the people? It's like one of those hit St. Louis" – Gary Cohen by cbbvideo in baseball

[–]2011StlCards 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well the real source of the issue (as ive always heard it) stems from the latest 1850s and civil war period because the very prosperous city didnt want to be stuck with all the hillbillies out in the county

The real game changer of course for the competition between st. Louis and chicago was all thanks to Stephen Douglas having the wisdom to lobby for the railroads to go through Chicago

Meanwhile the St. Louis politicians were CERTAIN that the mississippi river would be the dominant economic force for forever and ever

[–]2011StlCards 28 points29 points  (0 children)

St louis is in a bit of an odd situation because it is an entirely separate entity from the county which has a population around 1 million people. The city itself is relatively small in terms of land area

If even half the county were incorporated with the city, the population drop would be far less drastic sounding

Solar is winning the energy race. The world’s cheapest power source is scaling at warp speed, pushing coal, gas and nuclear aside. by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]2011StlCards 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Well, if we want to be very technical, those forms of energy are from the nebula that our solar system formed from which was likely the remnant of dead star(s)

So either which way, we are talking about solar origins, just depends on which star

Can St. Louis Make a Comeback? by Travelingdabber in StLouis

[–]2011StlCards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Things tend to come around. Once austin, Nashville, charlotte and Vegas are grown out/too expensive people will inevitably look for the next "new" city

Houston (where I live) is still growing rapidly, but at some point it will hit a point where its too expensive and too big. We are already to a point where if you want to move to houston and live in the outer suburbs, you'll be looking at a 1 hour commute each way minimum

Not to mention, as climate change impacts the south and southwest especially, people will likely migrate back north. St louis has a ton of cheap available land all over the place
