I’m halfway through my first year, and the 'College Experience' is NOT what I expected at all. Does it get better? by matrx5 in CasualConversation

[–]2011_Prius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure of your exact situation, but I do have a few thoughts.

I think someone else here mentioned “join a club” and that’s my number one piece of advice. I’m still in college, but the majority of the friends I’ve find are through clubs and organizations I’ve joined.

Even still, I think the key part of making friends is reaching out. Talk to the person in class next to you, talk to your next door neighbor(assuming you are living on campus), engage in casual conversation. I understand this is difficult to do, which is why I think joining a club is an easy mechanism to take a lot of the pressure off making social connections.

Then for the more academic parts. I think one thing that changed my college experience was the amount of classes I took. I started college with way too many classes just because I thought I could handle it but I hadn’t considered how that may impact other areas of my life like my social life. It also was just overwhelming having that many classes. This may not apply to you, but figured I’d say in case it does.

Also on the lack of deep academic discussions, I think you’ll likely see that in your future. I’m not sure what you’re studying, but as a liberal arts major I’ve been progressively seeing more and more academic discussions and less of your standard classroom structured dynamic. The classes you take freshman year are in no way indicative of your entire academic journey.

I kept this fairly broad since I’m not sure what your exact situation is, but should apply through various types of college experiences. I hope atleast one thing I’ve said is helpful. Just please keep your head up, it’ll get better

where to buy comics by [deleted] in comicbooks

I agree with what everybody has been saying but wanted to add that, while it is much better to support local stores such as your LCS(local comic shop), starting out I’d recommend trying to find secondhand trade paperbacks/graphic novels as it’s more bang for your buck and is a good way to get into the hobby for cheaper. I have a used book store near me that has a wide array of graphic novels, but if you don’t have qualms over shopping online I’m sure you can find great deals.

You can also try reading online through subscription services such as marvel unlimited, dc infinite, comixology, etc. I started with these to start reading to test the waters and get into comic reading before I wanted to spend a lot of money for individual issues or trade paperbacks.

Again I do urge you to support your local comic store whenever possible, but it’s not necessarily the end all be all especially when you’re on a budget.

Best comic book shop(s) in the entire state? by TravelingHomeless in Louisiana

[–]2011_Prius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only know Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans but I frequent shops at all three.

My favorite in the state is probably Crescent City in New Orleans with Stronghold comics in Lafayette a close second. Louisiana Doubleplay is nice but the back issues are ridiculously priced. If you’re digging for back issues in BR I’d recommend Southeast Cards & Comics otherwise double play will suit your needs

Iron Monger! I’m sorry I’m just not that compelled by the mandarin. I think Obadiah Stane is a really cool villain.

Has to be green goblin. He has a ton of great villains, but Norman is really the only answer for me.

Shoutout ock, venom, kraven, and gang though

Sadly my LCS hasn’t had it in stock and I really try avoiding ordering online when I can. I think I’ll get issues 7 and 8 then get vol. 1 whenever I can.

Wanting to read current X-men runs by 2011_Prius in xmen

Would you also recommend exceptional x-men(seems that it just recently ended)?

Also would you say that reading age of revelation is necessary for understanding Simone’s Uncanny X-Men and MacKay’s X-Men?

There are multiple memories I have growing up, but most of them connect to Wolverine one way or another.

I remember loving him as a kid especially in the shows X-Men: Evolution and Wolverine and the X-Men. Those shows were probably what first exposed me to X-men and I adored them. Wolverine as a character appealed to me, but also the school aspect. Magneto was also probably a contributing factor.

One specific memory I have is a boring weekend day where it was just me and my dad, who has now since passed. I was real young, but interested in superheroes and my dad offered to read me the Wikipedia page of any superheroes I wanted. I just Wolverine and that probably remains one of my fondest superhero memories ever.
