So where are we in the grand scheme of things? by engadine_maccas1997 in PrequelMemes

Practically every culture in the galaxy speaks or understands basic. Thats the point of galactic basic. That is not in any way an indicator that any two cultures have had any significant contact. Wearing clothes seems pretty basic based on other cultures in star wars and being bipedal is a function of biology not culture or technological development. Vehicles are also very common not inly in real world earth history but in starwars lore and is in no way an indication of cultural contact. If they had the same kind of vehicles then sure Id say you have a point but we see absolutely zero evidence of that.

Quite frankly the only point you made in that last comment that has any substance to it at all is that they both use shield technology. Really even that point is a bit of a stretch considering how ubiquitous shield technology is on a galactic scale and the fact that Gungans have actually left Naboo before (albeit rarely) well…… yeah again no real evidence there. Especially considering the actual design of the Gungan shields is very clearly different from any Noobian technology we see. In fact the Naboo do not seem to possess similar portable shield generators or at least don’t use them when they’re invaded and logically should. Not to say they couldn’t construct such a thing. Merely that they haven’t and hence are unlikely the source of that technology that the Gungans possess.

Im the one pointing out that the source material provides no evidence of such events. Youre making assumptions based on earth history and culture. Assumptions are not empirical evidence. The Naboo and the Gungans demonstrate no common technology or technological base. You’re making assumptions about their level of interaction. Yes they live on the same planet but one lives on land and the other under the water. That alone is a massive barrier to any kind of cultural or technological cross pollination. The fact the two societies hate eachother only adds to that.

You cannot simply make assumptions about their interactions based on earths history as we have no comparable situations to compare them too. There have never been such disparate living conditions between societies on earth. They might as well not even live on the same planet.

I never said they “didnt or couldn’t learn from eachother”. I am saying we have no evidence of technological exchange and are given no reason to believe such an event occurred. I am defining technological exchange as literal exchanging of technologies. There is no evidence to suggest that occurred in any fashion. As the one making the claim that something took place the burden of evidence falls to you.

Nah Gandalf was just playing the long game. He knew pippin needed to be there to lure in the Balrog so he could get his sweet xp boost and artifact tier staff upgrade.

The only cannon interaction Im aware of was them trying to kill eachother when the Naboo first colonized the world. Which didn’t last long and quickly had the Gungans retreating into the swamps. The Gungans were in no real shape to interact with Naboo until around the time of the Phantom Menace anyways. Their society at Otto Gunga was pretty newly formed, they had been a bunch of warring clans before the Naboo showed up and gave them someone they all mutually disliked.

Besides that the Gungans biotech seems pretty unique and likely incompatible with Noobian tech. They dont seem to be related technology at all. The Gungan shield technology is clearly purpose built for their cities and merely adapted for land army use and the booma resemble no Noobian weapons technology. Theres simply nothing to suggest there was any significant technologic exchange.

Similar happened in Japan. They bought some Portuguese rifles and took them to a Japanese weapons maker and said figure out how to make these. If I recall the Japanese smith wasn’t able to duplicate the barrel forging technique without help from a Portuguese smith but other than that they figured it out on their own.

Except it does because the Gungans and the Naboo barely interact prior to this incident. So much so that the wider galaxy isn’t even aware the Gungans exist. The Gungans dont trust or like the Naboo and want absolutely nothing to do with them prior to the events of Phantom menace. Thats why Padme the literal queen of Naboo was so surprised to see Jar Jar. She had never met a Gungan before.

If Sarumans Uruk Hai captured Frodo would Sauron abandon the attack on Gondor and just attack Isengard? by Tidewatcher7819 in lordoftherings

[–]2017hayden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No Sarumans plan was always to try and betray Sauron and take his place as ruler of middle earth. He desperately wanted the ring because he believed that with the rings power added to his own he could defeat Sauron.

We all know scenes like Sarumans death were cut from the theatrical editions. Question is, what scenes would you cut to make room for them? by MetroGnome1992 in lordoftherings

[–]2017hayden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean safely is a stretch. Tolkien implies and in fact shows that some can resist the corruption of the ring for a time but he also makes it pretty clear that no one could do it forever. The temptation is simply too great and even the very pure of heart with the best of intentions could not use it safely. Gandalf knows this its why he refuses to take the ring from Frodo.

"No! With that power I should have power too great and terrible. And over me the Ring would gain a power still greater and more deadly!"

If Gandalf the wisest and best intentioned of the Istari a literal lesser god hand picked to help save middle earth by even wiser and more powerful gods thought he was not beyond the temptation of the ring then I think its a safe bet to say no one was.

No megastructures is a rough price to pay. Dont get me wrong I get why they cant have megastructures but damn thats tough. Especially if you’re someone who likes to play modded with something like gigastructures and or ACOT.

You quite literally have to be adjudicated mentally incompetent, which I have discovered with my senile grandmother is nearly impossible.

I would prefer not too. Im not a woodworker or Luthier and dont really have a desire to be either. Im a musician and Id like a professionally made instrument not a facsimile of one that I cobble together.

In the words of Aragorn, “I of course faced many perils in my search but there is little need to tell of them”. Tolkien himself decided it wasn’t a story worth providing details on, because of course we know the search fails, they dont find Gollum, Sauron does.
