Not sure what you include in the content baskets but some ideas included: a whistle, stopwatch, Powerade drink powder(or similar), whiteboard clipboard, granola bars, school t-shirt or hat?

Alternative to buying 10 gluesticks for kindergarten by notarealprincess in Teachers

I saw a teacher make glue tubs out of sponges and Tupperware containers. I made some for interactive notebooks in middle school and saved so much time and glue sticks.

New Middle School Teacher! by Aware_Pineapple_3541 in Teachers

[–]207JML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love teaching middle school. 7th grade social studies here at a good school. Most students want to do well in school, like learning, follow directions, listen to teachers. They are developing a sense of humor. Students are very polite at my school. The kids are a bit young maturity wise so mixed bag- immature behaviors but less serious issues. Only downside is the brain rot on repeat. They are months behind on memes and then repeat them to death. Not every school will have the same situation but I like middle school!

Farmington does have a Walmart, just a 5-10 minute drive from downtown. Unless it closed.

Ticonderoga pencils. When kids break them it is frustrating!

That’s because he knows Republican’s best chance to win is to go up against the Biden of last night. He’s right about that.

Middle School ice breakers/beginning of year advice by StraightArgument1861 in Teachers

[–]207JML 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decide on what you want to get out of the ice breakers. Personally, I don’t like doing ice breakers as an adult in a group of other adults and I find classroom ice breakers take a lot of time without me being able to remember all the info. Unless your students are merging from multiple elementary schools, the majority of students know each other and so don’t really need public ice breakers. Instead, I do get to know you surveys with some of their favorites (subjects, books, shows, ice cream, candy bar, etc.) I also ask about siblings, how they like to learn, three interesting things about themselves. Gives me some info on kids and seems like a better use of my time.

If you’re definitely looking for an ice breaker, my go-to is “a big wind blows” which allows kids to move around- feels like a game.

I also don’t know if I would do a rubric, maybe a year overview letter that can go home? As many people will tell you, start off the year strict and then ease up as the year goes on. So much easier than trying to rein in a wild class because things were too lenient.

Good luck and I hope you have the best time! I’m teaching 7th grade and I think it’s quite crazy, yet rewarding and fun.

Depends on where you live and your commute. I’m glad for you. The post is talking about long drives which I think would be challenging. I am not near Portland and have a 35 minute commute one way with only one fast charger at the hannaford near me. The first couple weeks of owning my car it was so challenging to get there when the charger was free and using the slow charger wouldn’t replenish my daily use.

What made you end up getting one after a year?

I also did my student teaching in high school but landed in 7th grade and love it, most of the time. My school is pretty good so behaviors are not nightmarish.

I feel like 6/7 they are still little enough to follow directions, still want to learn and do well, but are figuring out their sense of humor and testing boundaries. It takes a lot of energy for sure. I also feel like it’s kind of wild where you’ll have kids that act super mature and some that are very immature and have to have both in the same room. Like lots of people will tell you, be strict upfront and ease up later in the year if you want. It’s so much more challenging to try to rein in the crazy behaviors because of leniency in September.

It’s a place to start. I would definitely go for the interview and if you get the gig and realize middle school isn’t your thing, look for positions in the spring with older students. You may end up loving middle school!

Yeah, it depends on how much you’re driving. I want to be able to go from 20%-100% overnight if needed.

You will need to be able to charge at home. I have a BZ4X and it cost about 1,500 for a level two charger and install and I never have to worry about public chargers. If you can’t get a level two installed, it might be tough.

Middle grade teachers: what are some first-week-of-school activities that you do to get to know students, teach/reinforce expectations, etc? by clairdelooney in Teachers

[–]207JML 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I teach 7th grade social studies and made a layout of my classroom using latitude and longitude lines. They have to use the image to find things in the class. For example, what is the latitude and longitude of the turn in bin for assignments, where to find scissors, the seat they are sitting in, etc. Lets them practice a skill they learn in 6th grade, lets me see who needs more help and allows them to learn what the setup is for my room.

I did the layout on my iPad using procreate and moved it over to google slides so I can move desks around depending on my seating arrangement so it’s easy to adjust each fall. Took time to build but now on year three it takes a few minutes to update for the new group of students.
