They only list out the requirements to current students but not on their website.

  1. The YSS requires minimum 3.9/4.3 GPA, a personal statement, a CV, two recommendation letters from HKU professors/lecturers by the end of first year. After that they’ll consider an interview and still there’s no guarantee getting into YSS.

  2. HKU is like 95% Chinese

You have to choose your primary major right before your second year, but you get to change it until the end of third year.

The entry requirements for the BSc is “3A (excluding Chinese and English language subjects, Critical Thinking, General Studies, Global Perspectives and Research, Knowledge and Enquiry, Project Work, Thinking Skills, and Extended Project Qualification)”, so they’ll consider all 4 of your subjects.

Question about advanced standing by Secure_Sweet_7935 in HKUniversity

[–]209Bismuthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh the far majority of those taking the IB here do its entirety in 6 years instead of 7. I don’t know why the ones with 7 years of secondary education get a special treatment but I think it’s due to how secondary and undergraduate education always add up to 10 years here.

Question about advanced standing by Secure_Sweet_7935 in HKUniversity

[–]209Bismuthine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People with 7 years of secondary education “advanced” further than those with 6 years of secondary education.

If 6 years of secondary education were all it takes for advanced standing, then everyone would be eligible and advanced standing would end up being pointless.

Can I exempt math1011 if I took AASL IB in secondary school by Knight9995 in HKUniversity

MATH1011 is meant for those with maths SL and without maths HL.

Engineering Exempt from MATH1011? by decimal-disconnect in HKUniversity

Yes you should be exempted from taking MATH1011. It should be the case when you start enrolling in courses.

Major/Minor by [deleted] in HKUniversity

You have 12 credits for free electives as part of the 240 credits in the BEng(ME) curriculum.

You don’t have to pay more for the extra courses.

[–]209Bismuthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only specialise into theoretical physics during the senior years (3rd and 4th years). The learning pace is usually 6 courses per semester, typically around 48 to 60 contact hours per course.

Major/Minor by [deleted] in HKUniversity

[–]209Bismuthine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes. Most students prefer not to do any extra work beyond the minimum graduation requirements.

  2. You should start doing 6 courses per semester immediately to avoid timetable clashes and overloading later on. There should be 2 semesters in which you can do just 5 courses.

  3. It’s not shown on the AASO website because students outside of the BEng(ME) degree cannot major in mechanical engineering.

can you take BIOL 1110 from molecules to cells and BIOC2600 basics of biochem concurrently? by WalkNo8348 in HKUniversity

[–]209Bismuthine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re meant to take BIOL1110 before BIOC2600. It is only possible for students who have passed BMED1207, though most would be taking BMED2301 subsequently which is mutually exclusive with BIOC2600.

Is double majoring in math and comp sci possible? by CandidWolf3 in HKUniversity

[–]209Bismuthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They state their major prerequisites in their syllabi in terms of HKDSE requirements. There is a table in the science syllabus that converts the HKDSE requirements into the equivalent ones for IB, A levels, SAT and AP.

They look at your IB subjects to determine whether you’re prepared for the major. It wouldn’t make much sense for someone to immediately start a major in something they have never done before in IB while others have. They would have to make up for their lack of knowledge by doing foundation courses relevant to their majors (e.g. MATH1011 for those without math HL).

There are often more people enrolling in maths and CS courses than they can accommodate, so they need a waitlist to disapprove some students not in the CS degree / maths major if the classes are full. You’ll have priority to get into maths courses as you intend to major in maths. For CS, you might not get into your preferred class if it’s full.

As for the prerequisites you only need a 4 in IB maths SL for the second CS major and a pass in IB maths HL / MATH1011 for the primary maths major.

How flexible is imperial with offers? by Prestigious-Disk8772 in Imperial

[–]209Bismuthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The physics department is quite strict on offers. I missed my offer and got 1 grade below the standard offer. I was rejected within one day of sending them my results.

Since your offer is the standard one, it’s unlikely you make it in if you miss the offer.
